Influential People

After a long day at work and finally reaching home with my daughter, I am stressed out. As my daughter and I enter our apartment home, the smell of Hawaiian Breeze Glade air freshener immense my nose. As I change out of my uniform, I realize that laundry needs to be complete and begin the process. My daughter is present and asks “Mommy can I help?” “Yes baby!” I say. Without hesitation she begins to put the white clothes inside the Whirlpool washing machine. Her short little frame pressed against the washing machine as she struggles to reach. She then looks at me with her almond shaped eyes stretched wide, “Mommy, I’m done, what’s next?” I respond, “Thank you Mari, you are such a big helper but I had a long day so it is best we wind down.” Instantly her mood shifted. Mari was torn into pieces. She loves to help me and I admire her willingness.
Being only three years old at the time, it’s hard for Mari to understand the answer “no”. Her face clearly showed disappointment with tears streaming down her face. Her caramel skin, thick dark brown hair in two oversized ponytails, with pink lace clips in the front looks so adorable. I dread seeing her in dismay, but tonight was not the best night for activities. My mind was overwhelmed with burdens, frustration, and agony. I was crying internally but I couldn’t make it noticeable. I plead my case to my daughter as I had to slightly pull her to the bathroom. In a matter of time she calmed down and begin to pout.
As we enter her Princess theme bathroom, I begin to run warm water inside the tub for a bubble bath. After the tub fills, I help her inside. Her little body feels light as a feather as I sit her down. She begins to play with her pink sponge and yellow rubber duck for a while. Splashing water using the duck numerous of times, she soon grew tired. Shortly after she says to me, “I’m sleepy Mommy”, in a whining manner. I promptly begin to bathe my mini me and rinse her. Draped in a SpongeBob towel we walk towards Mari’s room so she can get dress. Her bright pink room with purple trimming was nice and neat. Bright fairies and colorful butterflies decorated the wall. Her name spelled in bold purple letters hung on the room door. A Tinkerbell table and two mini chairs set near the window along with a full size bed.
After dressing Mari in her pajamas we exit her room and enter mine. Already knowing she wants to sleep with me, I help her into my bed. I turn the television on as I plop down onto my King size bed. Remembering that my daughter is behind me I turn the TV to Nick Jr. “Mari, I’m going to take a shower now, don’t get out of the bed.” I order her. She nods her head in agreement. I walk over to my linen and towel closet and retrieve a clean towel and washcloth. Entering my bathroom, I place my towel on the towel hanger. Undressing, I feel tension in my head as if I’m thinking too much. Today was not good. My mind was in a million places and trying to focus was hard. I decide to take a Lavender and Chamomile bubble bath to help ease some tension. I step into the hot water with ease trying to get use to the temperature. I slowly sit down. The water feels so good on my body. I relax for 20 minutes and then wash off. My headache a little better.
With still so much on my mind, all I want to do is lay down. I look at Mari from the bathroom door, her eyes still wide open with no sleep in sight watching me. I say to her “Mari, it’s almost time for bed”. She replies “Ok mommy, I’m waiting for you”. With my pajamas now on, I crawl into the bed next to her. She then lays her head on my shoulder as we begin to watch TV together. Soon she is fast asleep. I move her over in the middle of the bed, turn my back and turn the TV. An Episode of Law and Order Special Victims Unit is on. I try hard to watch TV but to no avail. I can’t stop thinking about life.
My eyes begin to water from thoughts and worries that were taking place in my life. I lay there in silence with heavy burden on my heart. With my back towards my daughter, I long for relief of hardships. Sure that my daughter is sleep, I close my eyes and silently begin to pray. Soon, I feel my daughter close behind me. She whispers in my ear “It’s going to be Okay Mommy, don’t cry.” I slightly jump in disbelief. I thought Mari was sleep. I am sure this is a sign from God. I ask myself, “How did she know I was crying?” Someone once told me children can sense emotions. If that is the case, I’m sure she did.
The next day I felt much better. I still was thinking how my daughter knew I was crying. All I could do is know that everything is okay and my daughter helped me to feel that. God blessed me with an angel. She gives me strength and courage I need to achieve my goals. I desire better in life because of my daughter and I thank God for her.
As I experience the passing of time, I realize the importance of people who are a part of my life. The littlest gestures and actions mean the most to me. Sometimes all it takes is just one simple word or action to feel special or love. I am able to say that I am truly blessed to have a daughter like Mari. She is truly God sent.

Influential People

...There are so many people that influence me greatly. It’s difficult to just narrow them down to three! Each person in my life is special to me in their own way. The three that I am going to write about today are quite exceptional though, they are three extraordinary women that have been with me through thick and thin. They have all helped me overcome many obstacles whether it’s been for three months, a year, or even fifteen years; all three of them have helped me in one way or another. The first person I chose to discuss is my mother. I’m not even sure where to begin. This woman means so much to me, and I could probably go on for pages about her. She is the only person that I can ultimately trust and rely on for everything. She has been with me every step of the way; from school problems, to personal dilemmas, she has never let me down. She is an amazing women and I am lucky to have her in my life. My mom is my role model; I remember growing up and wanting to do every single thing that she did growing up. To this day, I would still like to do some of the things that she did because she has had such an adventurous and exhilarating life. Sometimes, I believe that I take advantage of what she does for me. She washes my clothes, folds them, cooks for me everyday, is my personal chauffer, gives me money to spend, and much more. Most times, I don’t even say thank you, I’ve just gotten accustomed to her doing these things for me. I am very thankful for all that my mom has done for me...

College Admissions Essay: The Influential People In My Life

...There are always going to be people who tell you what you should do and who you should become; parents, teachers, siblings, grandparents. Everyone always wants to chime in on the person that they expect you to be. When in reality none of them have to live your life for you, none of them get to become you, so in all seriousness, why do they get a vote? Why do we allow the important, influential people in our lives to make us feel small, inferior, and intimidated based on their expectations? I went to Carmel Middle School in Colorado Springs, Colorado and in the eighth grade I started to understand what it was to truly be myself and to accept the person I was and some of the limitations I had. I learned to be okay with the skin I was in and not...

...following statements. Do you believe the statement to be true or false? 1. College students who disapprove of cheating do not cheat on tests; it is only the students who view cheating as acceptable who do cheat. 2. When segregation was still legal, hotel and restaurant owners with racial stereotypes toward Chinese people would not serve them food or allow them to stay at their establishments. 3. How well people like their jobs is predictive of people’s job attendance. Those who like their jobs are less likely to miss a day of work. 4. During the 1970s, people who felt that the energy crisis was a significant problem used less energy than did those who did not really believe that there was a crisis. 5. Regardless of whether an employer makes a snap judgment or deliberates extensively about a hiring decision, if the employer has a negative attitude toward working women, a female candidate will not be hired. All of these commonsense statements assume that people’s attitudes influence their actions and decisions. In fact, as we will see in this chapter, none of these five statements is correct. The basic finding of decades of research is that sometimes people act in accordance with their attitudes, and other times they act in ways that are quite inconsistent with their attitudes. In this chapter, we address three fundamental questions regarding the attitude–behavior relation (Zanna & Fazio, 1982). First, is there a relation? That is, do attitudes influence behavior? ...

...Empathy Exercise Gina Krazer PSY/220 December 13, 2011 Mary Jeanell Buck Snap judgments have a negative effect of hindering one’s ability to foster empathy. Often, such judgments can prove to be incorrect about a person, if the time is taken out to get to know him/her. According to Bolt (2004, p. 51), “People are not always what they seem at first glance. This is not to say that negative judgments are always erroneous or that people never contribute to their own failure, merely that life situations are unique and shape people’s actions more than we know.” Almost every individual is guilty of making these snap judgments, including myself. However, I can only think of one person that I presently have negative feelings toward. I am not in the position to say that I know this person well either. She is a coworker of mine and one certain situation influenced my judgments about her. If I found that I was wrong, I would change my opinion and work to change the basic relationship that she and I hold. The circumstances that created this snap judgment occurred during the time I was training her to be a server. On the second day of her training, I had about three tables in a row not leave any tips. Since this does not normally happen, I had suspected that she may have taken the tips, because she was cleaning all of my tables. I had my general manager check the cameras and, as I suspected, she had taken the tips. I confronted her about it and she immediately apologized...

...Functional Analysis A functional analysis is a process of learning about people before intervening in their lives. It is a systematic process for describing difficult behavior, identifying environmental factors and setting events that predict the behavior, and guiding the development of effective and efficient behavior support plans. Three important beliefs underlying a functional analysis are that 1) all behavior that persists serves some purpose, 2) every person is unique, and 3) the best way to help someone change their behavior is to first understand the reasons behind the behavior. ...and probably always will be. My friends like me for that quality. That’s with friends though. One of my teachers this year constantly harps on my quietness. He says hi to me in the mornings, and it seems to me that he always says something like, “Why do you always sound so timid when I say hi to you? You’re not like that during class. So, why so shy now?” I’ve never legitimately answered him. But, I honestly don’t know why, because I’m only like that in school. Sure, I’m a little soft spoken, and sure I’m not the most talkative in that class, but I’m not unconfident. I’m just naturally soft spoken. I don’t normally raise my hand and blurt out answers, or go up to a teacher and have a random conversation. I don’t like talking in front of people, because I’m afraid of what they think. I’m afraid of being judged. It’s like I’m a whole other person. Frightened, and timid. On the other hand, at home I am a COMPLETELY different person. If my mom was to hear any of my teachers say, “She’s just an angel.”, or “She’s just so sweet.” .My mom probably wouldn’t believe any of them. At home I’m loud and I tend to speak my mind. ...to their work and motivator satisfaction and also the satisfaction of lower-order needs at work for some people. This model may apply in many ways for example in a working place, if a person that is every cautious about his hygiene and cleanliness is employed in a place where they have little or no hygiene tolerance this person would not be a able to function properly because of his environment and would most likely not perform as supposed in his work because they would be more focused on trying to clean and make the environment soothe them most of the time instead of carrying out their activities. Another example that this model may apply to competition in offices when workers are not satisfied with their current level at the job or their current salary they tend to have grudges against each other and this would definitely cause disarray in the office place amongst the workers, this situation occurs very often at many work places. My model would state that life changes according to the way you want it to this means that the way you act or behave towards different situations would determine how your life could change easily in certain circumstances people act differently so this can change the way people would see you because of a certain behavior or attitude. An example in which my model can be as follows, usually people think the quiet people are the weak ones and the harmless ones but it’s usually the other way around because when they get really...

...describe the feelings I feel for the people behind the shirts at the clothesline project. Especially women who are beat and abused both physically and sexually, as well as raped and manipulated. I had never heard of the clothesline project before but the more than “traumatizing” experience will leave an imprint upon my brain forever. There are two things I wish to mention at the beginning of my paper. As I was walking to the grande ballroom I was asked by a student ambassador to write something upon a wall that inspires me. I wrote “the look on a person’s face when you do something that makes their day.” And as I was walking around looking at the various t-shirts and stories the thought kept coming back: “what inspires these people to act the way they do.” I couldn’t understand why there were so many Fathers beating mothers and children, Grandfathers and uncles molesting loved ones, and so people who have been murdered. Shirt after shirt “I hate you” and “why did you do this to me” “I was only x amount years old” I was appalled. More so for the fact that these experiences are happening to us right in our neighborhoods. At the beginning I thought this was a traveling exhibit, but it is not. This is happening right in our own community, around us every day. The sad part is the fact that in a lot of cases, the victims didn’t say anything for years at a time, or due to circumstances people didn’t even believe them even police officers and people who are supposed to investigate. ...talk says a lot about us. Physical appearance has to do with how a person grooms himself or herself. This narrows down the clothing and accessories one wears. Although appearance should not be how we judge a person, most of us get that habit from our family. Unfortunately, the reality is that people judge others by outer appearance. As Brent Staples describes in his story, “Youngish black man-a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing hair, both hands shoved into the pockets of a bulky military jacket-seemed menacingly close.” (Staples 241) The woman walking by him was terrified of him. She was judging him by his appearance; by what he was wearing. Among other things, which form an individual’s appearance besides clothing is how one grooms. We have the tendency of assuming a person is a certain way because of their appearance. In comparison, how a person shaves, does their hair gives them a certain personality. Also the way they talk, move, and smile, says a lot about a person. I have worked in the banking industry for five years and have learned a few things about people. As a result, working in the banking industry you get to see and meet different type of people. There was this one older lady that every morning would stop at the bank and have a cup of our complimentary coffee.
