Not only does brushing your teeth allow for minty fresh breath and a nice clean smile, it also prevents periodontal diseases. Periodontal disease more commonly known as gum disease affects the gum around the teeth that acts as support. It is commonly caused by the accumulation of plaque or tartar which irritate the gums. Those with gum disease commonly have bleeding gum while those with severe cases experience loss of gum, bone, and even teeth. Periodontal disease is one of the most unrecognized diseases given that it affects about half of the US population. It also affects more men than women, affecting 57% of men in the US compared to only 38% women (Eke, Dye, Wei, Thornton-Evans, & Genco, 2012). A plausible reason why this occurs based on research is that men have a more heighten immune response …show more content…
Heart Disease
There is research that suggests that periodontal disease increases the risk for heart disease. Heart disease or cardiovascular disease is when the blood vessels are blocked or narrowed which disrupt blood flow (Staff, 2014). It can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
A survey done by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that men younger than 50 with periodontal disease were 72% more likely to develop heart disease than men who didn’t have any gum disease (Ryan T. Demmer, 2006).
The possible association is that one of the bacteria, P.gingivalis, which causes periodontal disease, is capable of causing plaque buildup in the arteries (Atherosclerosis) (Ryan T. Demmer, 2006). And if plaque buildup occurs in the coronary artery it will interrupt the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Living with heart disease involves heart pains, shortness of breath, and constant fatigue. And unfortunately, there is no easy fix besides changing one lifestyle including diet, exercise, and dental hygiene.

...Cardiovascular Disease Name Institution Date Background Throughout my years of occupation as a dental hygienist, I have come across various dental problems. Children as well as adult are capable of succumbing to the various dental illnesses. Nicholas (2011) attests that there underlies a great relationship amid oral inflammatory issue and cardiovascular processes. In other words, Nicholas’s research aims at showcasing that most oral inflammatory issue are likely to lead to cardiovascular dilemmas. The ultimate implication on this particular study is that regular dental care processes play a pragmatic role in preventing most cardiovascular diseases. The following paper is a comprehensive research in which in which I seek to uncover the history of cardiovascular disease as well as how it affects dental practices. History An American Heart Association commonly abbreviated as (AHA) describes the various heart disease as cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular illnesses are a leading cause of death throughout the world. Cardiovascular disease dates from several years back. The period at which the disease is said to have come into existence is commonly known as the ancient Egypt. However, it is worth to note that the vast society has only become enlightened regarding the cause a well as the effects of the cardiovascular illnesses just in the wake of the 20th Century despite the ancient history of the disease. As a health practitioner, the implication underlying this revelation...

Fruits and Vegetables

...throughout my research. The tomato, thought to be a vegetable by many, as well as myself, is actually not, it is a fruit. The pumpkin and avocado also fall into the category of a fruit ("Did you know fruit facts".) These false impressions result in the mistaken identity in countless fruits and vegetables. A fruit is the ripened ovary of a flowering plant, often sweet and fleshy ("Fruits vs Vegetables"). On most accounts, fruits are foods that are consumed for dessert or as a snack. For example: apple pie, a banana split, or a strawberry shortcake, all of which are desserts with ingredients that require the use of fruit (MarthaStewart.com). The majority of fruits taste rather sweet due to a simple sugar called fructose. However, fructose is not the only element found in fruits. For a fruit to truly be a fruit, it must contain seeds. Some examples of fruits include pumpkins, avocados, bananas, tomatoes, and apples. “The majority of fruits taste rather sweet due to a simple sugar called fructose." Unlike fruits, vegetables, more often than not, are eaten accompanied by a meal's main course ("Fruits vs Vegetables"). Vegetables may be found in meals such as a juicy steak beside a twice baked potato smothered in cheese and bacon, or a freshly...

Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple

...geriatric medicine. As a physician you will be faced daily with the concepts of microbial disease and antimicrobial therapy. Microbiology is one of the few courses where much of the "minutia" is regularly used by the practicing physician. This book attempts to facilitate the learning of microbiology by presenting the information in a clear and entertaining manner brimming with memory aids. Our approach has been to: 4) Create a conceptual, organized approach to the organisms studied so the student relies less on memory and more on logical pathophysiology. The text has been updated to include current information on rapidly developing topics, such as HIV and AIDS (vaccine efforts and all the new anti-HIV medications), Ebola virus, Hantavirus, E. coli outbreaks, Mad Cow Disease, and brand-new antimicrobial antibiotics. The mnemonics and cartoons in this book do not intend disrespect for any particular patient population or racial or ethnic group but are solely presented as memory devices to assist in the learning of a complex and important medical subject. We welcome suggestions for future editions. 1) Write in a conversational style for rapid assimilation. 2) Include numerous figures serving as "visual memory tools" and summary charts at the end of each chapter. These can be used for "cram sessions" after the concepts have been studied in the text. 3) Concentrate more on clinical and infectious disease issues that are both interesting and vital to the actual practice of medicine.
