Programming Solutions
Being able to create a solution to a certain problem through programming can be a huge task to undertake, but it is a task that must be accomplished in order to get certain things done. Many companies face problems in the IT field that can be solved through programming, from simple to very complex, these problems usually require some sort of input and variables in order to create a solution. One problem that I face in the workplace of construction, is trying to figure out the number of ceiling tiles we will need to fit the ceilings in most offices we build. The ceiling tiles are a certain size and cover large areas which can be a tedious task trying to count how many tiles it will take to fill in the ceiling. A programming solution could be very beneficial in an instance such as this because by creating inputs such as the size of the tiles and the area they need to cover, an output could be the number of tiles that will be needed and thus saving a large amount of time on counting every space they need to fill.
This problem of having to determine the number of ceiling tiles it will take to cover the celling area is normally done by counting the spaces in the ceiling that need to be filled and then determining how many tiles will need to be purchased. By coming up with a program to solve this problem would no doubt save a lot of time and even money by not buying an excess amount and either throwing them away or storing them. I believe a simple program would be to have multiple inputs of the size of the tile and the area needing to be covered. By having these two inputs, it would allow for a formula to be created of the area divided by the size of the tile in order to create an output of number of tiles. Because these tiles are perfectly square, the area of each would be an integer and make the algorithm much easier to calculate and be able to output a number that would show the exact amount of tiles needed to cover the ceiling.
The personnel required at this time to figure out the number of tiles needed would be the on sites and myself project manager. We constantly have new jobs and going to each one to count the spaces needed to be filled with these tiles is extremely tedious and time consuming. With this programming solution, it would not even take a visit to the site to figure out how much we need, one could simply look at the blueprints and find the area of the celling needing tiles, input this number into the program and it would calculate right away the number of tiles needed. This would save a great deal of time and money by negating the need to visit each site and spend time counting by hand, instead just typing into the computer and finding the solution from there.
Being able to use a computer algorithm that is so simple but allows for that much work to be done in a matter of seconds would be extremely beneficial and a testament to just how important programming solutions can be in every facet of the workplace. A modular approach to this program makes it even simpler by breaking it down into single pieces that can be seen and incorporating them all into coming up with a solution. It is important to do it this way because the tiles and area are single numbers and need to be separated, otherwise the two could become muddled and either give a wrong output or not compute at all.
While this may not seem like a credible programming solution, in my everyday work, it would save a great deal of time and allow the company to save money by not spending on excess that is not needed. This program could be very simply written and would only require a few different lines of actual code, therefore it would not take a whole of time to make and not be wasted.
