Similarities Between The Lottery And The Truman Show

The movie, “The Truman Show”, directed by Peter Weir and written by Andrew Niccol. This movie was filmed in 1998 at the start of the technological boom, the year before the turn of the three zeros on all of the computers. “The Truman Show” is essentially a reality show that has depicted the life of Truman ever since he was born, but Truman has no idea it is happening. This is done with 5,000 hidden cameras throughout the world he lives in. There are two distinct readings that can be compared to this movie, “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” and “The Lottery” while also containing three distinct fears for the people of that time, fear of people being influenced by the media, fear of technology taking over their lives, and finally that we are …show more content…
“The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” describes all the pleasure of society is based on the suffering of one person Some of them have come to see it, others are content merely to know it is there. They all know that it has to be there. Some of them understand why, and some do not, but they all understand that their happiness depends wholly on this child's abominable misery”. This compares exceedingly well with “The Truman Show” in that the pleasure of the TV viewers is based on the suffering of Truman “For God's sake, Chris! The whole world is watching. We can't let him die in front of a live audience!” In both of these stories, the happiness is the product of the suffering of one poor soul. Additionally, in “The Lottery”, it is socially acceptable to stone an innocent child because it is deemed traditional “Seventy-seventh year I been in the lottery," Old Man Warner said as he went through the crowd. "Seventy-seventh time." (Shirley Jackson). This compares greatly to “The Truman Show”. The narrator announces “here comes the longest running documentary soap opera in story, now in its 30th great year”, because it has been playing for so long that people see no problem with watching every second of Truman’s life, it is deemed a tradition. In both comparisons, it can be clearly seen that that as long as people are benefiting from the suffering or it …show more content…
Whether it is the fear of the media, fear of technology, or fear of privacy; each of these fears are justified subconsciously and fly right over the viewer of the show’s head. But when looking at the fears of the 2017 society, the fears are very real and happening now. Just look at any news station all across America, whether it is MSNBC or Fox news, its viewers aren’t forming their own opinions, they are just copying whatever the teleprompter is telling the person to say. At any anti or pro Trump rallies, whenever the protestors are interviewed; they have no idea why they are there. The protestors are just there because the media told them to be there. Secondly, technology takeover is a huge problem with today’s society. From not getting off the phone while driving to not getting off of it during a family dinner. Society is addicted to technology just as the viewers of the show were in the movie. Lastly, the realness of the fear of privacy started back in 2013 when Edward Snowden released all the classified information about the NSA and the American people being spied on. Ever since then, the fear of privacy has and always will loom the American citizen just as it did for

Smoozing

...Customized for: Isaac (illin@mednet.ucla.edu) THE INTRODUCTION Vault Guide to Schmoozing Customized for: Isaac (illin@mednet.ucla.edu) 2 © 2009 Vault.com, Inc. Introduction What does schmoozing sound like to you? Maybe it sounds smug, unctuous, oily, slimy. It sounds, quite frankly, like 'oozing.' Schmoozing is far from slimy, but 'oozing' actually isn’t a bad description of what a schmoozer does. A schmoozer slides into opportunities where none are apparent, developing friendships from the slightest of acquaintances. Through formless, oozy, schmoozy action, a schmoozer moves slowly but inexorably towards his or her goals. What is schmoozing? Schmoozing is noticing people, connecting with them, keeping in touch with them — and benefiting from relationships with them. Schmoozing is about connecting with people in a mutually productive and pleasurable way — a skill that has taken on new importance in our fragmented, harried, fiber-optic-laced world. Schmoozing is the development of a support system, a web of people you know who you can call, and who can call you, for your mutual benefit and enjoyment. Schmoozing is the art of semi-purposeful conversation: half chatter, half exploration. Schmoozing is neither project nor process. It's a way of life. How does schmoozing differ from networking? Conventional networking is the clammy science of collecting business cards ad infinitum, of cold-calling near strangers to grill them about possible openings in their places...

But, in fact, households and economies have much in common. A household faces many decisions. It must decide which members of the household do which tasks and what each member gets in return: Who cooks dinner? Who does the laundry? Who gets the extra dessert at dinner? Who gets to choose what TV show to watch? In short, the household must allocate its scarce resources among its various members, taking into account each member’s abilities, efforts, and desires. Like a household, a society faces many decisions. A society must decide what jobs will be done and who will do them. It needs some people to grow food, other people to make clothing, and still others to design computer software. Once society has allocated people (as well as land, buildings, and machines) to various jobs, 3 Consider why trade among people or nations can be good for everyone Discuss why markets are a good, but not per fect, way to allocate resources Learn what determines some trends in the overall economy 1 TLFeBOOK 2 4 Ten Principles of Economics ...

Generally, those journalists do a competent job of reporting on the prospect’s record. In the case of Governor George W. Bush, Texas reporters had written numerous stories about his failed businesses in the oil patch, the dubious land grab and questionable funding behind a new stadium for Bush’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and his various political contradictions and hypocrisies while serving in Austin. Living History

...___________________________ LIVING HISTORY Hillary Rodham Clinton Simon & Schuster New York • London • Toronto • Sydney • Singapore To my parents, my husband, my daughter and all the good souls around the world whose inspiration, prayers, support and love blessed my heart and sustained me in the years of living history. AUTHOR’S NOTE In 1959, I wrote my autobiography for an assignment in sixth grade. In twenty-nine pages, most half-filled with earnest scrawl, I described my parents, brothers, pets, house, hobbies, school, sports and plans for the future. Forty-two years later, I began writing another memoir, this one about the eight years I spent in the White House living history with Bill Clinton. I quickly realized that I couldn’t explain my life as First Lady without going back to the beginning―how I became the woman I was that first day I walked into the White House on January 20, 1993, to take on a new role and experiences that would test and transform me in unexpected ways. By the time I crossed the threshold of the White House, I had been shaped by my family upbringing, education, religious faith and all that I had learned before―as the daughter of a staunch conservative father and a more liberal mother, a student activist, an advocate for children, a lawyer, Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mom. For each chapter, there were more ideas I wanted to discuss than space allowed; more people to include than could be named; more places visited than could be described...

In the end, we are our choices. —Jeff Bezos, commencement speech at Princeton University, May 30, 2010 Prologue In the early 1970s, an industrious advertising executive named Julie Ray became fascinated with an unconventional public-school program for gifted children in Houston, Texas. Her son was among the first students enrolled in what would later be called the Vanguard program, which stoked creativity and independence in its students and nurtured expansive, outside-the-box thinking. Ray grew so enamored with the curriculum and the community of enthusiastic teachers and parents that she set out to research similar schools around the state with an eye toward writing a book about...
