Francis Day acquired a piece of land from a Hindu Raja in 1639. The Company built a Fort on it and called it Fort St. George. The Raja also granted the Company the power and the authority to govern a nearby village called Madraspatam. Madras, as it came to be known, was an amalgamation of Madraspatam or Black Town where the Indians lived and Fort St George or White Town where the British lived. It was an ‘Agency’ which was subordinate to Surat, the only Presidency of the time. It was headed by an Agent who had a Council to assist him. During the first period between1639 and 1665, the administration of justice was neither systematic nor regular. For example, when, in 1641, an Indian was accused of murdering a woman he was living with, no formal trial was held. A few questions were asked and the woman’s clothes and jewellery was (not too surprisingly) found in his house. That was deemed to be enough to condemn him, and the Agent communicated his findings to the Raja. The most famous event that occurred in the 1920’s was St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. This day will be remembered since it deeply affected the widely known gangster, Al Capone. This was just the beginning of his downfall and it all began on February 14, 1929. First of all, Chicago had split into two rival gangs led by Al Capone and George “Bugs” Moran, by the late 1920’s. Both of these leaders vied for power, prestige, and money (Rosenberg 1). Much of the problems arose after Capone’s former enemy Dion O’ Banion was killed and it started an all-out-war in the city (The St. 1). Moran was soon the new leader. ...In recent years, St. George has been plagued with a landfill scarcity crisis. Growing environmental negligence has caused this scarcity. Parktopia produces 15% of all total waste in St. George, making us the largest waste producer in the area. We need to take responsibility and help solve our city’s landfill scarcity problem. Methodology We used a framework called MECE (mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive). MECE allows us to find problems that are relevant towards our situation. The methodology allowed us to identify three areas of research that influence the solution that solves our problem; these three spheres of research are cost, community, and competition. Research The first sphere of research is about cost. We identified that the largest increasing cost in Parktopia is the trash disposal cost. The second sphere of research, which dealt with community, identified that our community is burdened by the increasing trash disposal cost and landfill scarcity.
