To prove you know the subject you teach you must have a Bachelors degree in that area, coursework in the subject area that is equivalent to a major in the subject, or a graduate degree. However after working in the field of education and having the opportunity to observe hundreds of educators on varying levels and expertise, I have to question whether a highly qualified teacher is synonymous with highly effective? I do understand that this question can not be answered with a simple yes or no. But my true thought is whether this question should even exist. Is there any correlation to how much you know about a subject and how well you can teach it? Naturally you must have some familiarity with a subject to teach it but does one have to be an “expert”?
