Aria is a white 10 year old girl in the fifth grade, at a rural elementary school in Dartmouth, MA. Her overall appearance is clean and well groomed. She wears glasses for correction of a strabismus (lazy eye). With glasses her vision appears to be normal. Aria is also diagnosed with asthma and requires the use of an inhaler to treat symptoms. Arias primary language is English and she is a very social child. Aria’s oral language skills are age appropriate for social situations. Aria is currently placed in and integrated classroom and works with a reading specialist three times a week for 30 minutes. In the past, Aria has academically performed average in ELA and Math, but performed below average in Science and History. Aria is very concerned with making mistakes and will not participate if she doesn’t know the correct answer. During Science and History assignments Aria struggles with decoding unfamiliar word and reading comprehension. Aria enjoys reading at her independent level but becomes frustrated when reading materials that are challenging. Aria currently knows her letters and sounds and she can answer simple comprehension questions during ELA activities. Aria also performs extremely well on spelling test. She has many friends at school and participates in several after school programs. Aria has also participated in several out of school activities such as: dance, cheerleading, and soccer. During free time at school Aria enjoys drawing, hula hooping, soccer and jumping rope. Anecdotal Classroom Observations:

...Running Head: A TEXTBOOK EVALUATION A Textbook Evaluation: Honors Calculus for an Eleventh Grader Using four different evaluation tools, three different math textbooks were evaluated for use within an honors eleventh grade calculus classroom. This report will include the results recorded for each textbook, and will then indicate which textbook was evaluated as the most suitable for an eleventh grade reader. The Fry readability graph was the first method used for the evaluation of each textbook. The graph was developed in the 1960’s and later revised by Edward Fry in 1977. The original version was created for African teachers who taught English as a second language. After the revision it also included explanations, directions and an extension to the 17th grade level. The Fry readability graph is used to determine the appropriate grade level for a chosen textbook. During this evaluation a total of three passages were used; two passages from the beginning of the text and one passage from the end. After choosing the three different 100 word-count passages, the number of sentences in each passage were counted and then averaged. ...Assessment and Text Evaluation in the Content Area Classroom My content area text book that I chose was an Algebra 1 textbook. Algebra 1 is usually taken in either the 8th or 9th grade. To get estimated grade level I used Fry's Readability Formula. To get this estimation, I randomly selected three passages from the textbook of one hundred words each. For each section of one hundred words, I counted the number of sentences and the number of syllables. For the first one hundred word sample, the number of sentences was roughly 4.9 with 180 syllables, the second sample was roughly 3 sentences with 131 syllables, and the last sample was roughly 5.3 sentences with 156 syllables. This averages out to roughly 4.4 sentences with 155.67 syllables. According to the Fry's Readability Formula, this textbook was estimated to be between the 10th and 11th grade reading level, which is a little bit higher than it should be. After determining the reading level of the Algebra 1 textbook, I then took another passage, from the same textbook, and performed a cloze procedure. To do this, I took another random one hundred word sample and deleted a random word from the second sentence and from there after deleted every five words. The media sources I used for this week’s topics included the textbook, the online videos provided, and my wife. I used the text book for most of the assignments this week. I felt like the text book for week 2 and week 3 did a good job of explaining the meanings of the topics presented and did not require additional readings.
