The Best Way to Study in College

Organization is Key * Use a To Do List, either with a digital device or paper (ex. Franklin Covey). * Schedule study dates on your calendar and keep to your schedule. * Track your study hours in a “study log” to see how much time you are really committing per class and/or project. * Scan books and articles into PDF’s for your tablet or computer when applicable.

How to Study * Study in quiet areas where you can keep 100% focus (no music, TV, Internet, and Friends). * Study daily in small chucks, building up “study strength” while also laying a strong knowledge foundation. * Always carry your books and study materials with you. * Stay healthy – watch the junk food and get regular exercise. * Have a study buddy – someone who can cover you with notes if you miss a class or can study with you and keep you on track with assignments. * Make sure every hour to take at least a 10 minute break to clear your mind and re-energize. * Look for overall themes in your studies: “What” questions and “So What”.

Participate in Class * Make sure the professor knows your name: Say hello and goodbye, ask questions during breaks or after class, etc. * Pay attention to the lecture, because the professor does notice who is attentive and who is not. * Ask questions in class. * Use the professor’s office hours to ask questions and to get to know you. * Email/alert your professor of current events related to the class. Recent articles are always a great ice-breaker. * Always be positive. * Be cognizant of titles; use professor unless told otherwise.

Take Notes that Matter * Rule #1 – Attend every class, no matter how tired or hung-over you are. * Rule #2 – Take notes for every class. * Rule #3 – When taking notes, don’t try to write the Magna Carta: * Write the date and title of the lecture on the top of your paper. * Focus on “The Big Idea” of the day’s lecture. * Focus on the beginning and end of each course, since this is where the main takeaways will be located. * In Quant classes, write as much data as possible * In Non-Quant (Poets) classes, write topics in 3-steps: The Question at hand, the Evidence supporting the question, and the Conclusion. * Rule #4 – Organize all your notes (electronic or paper) into folders, tabbed in order. * Rule #5 – Make sure you know the value of each assignment towards your final grade. Don’t kill yourself over an assignment that’s worth only 5% of your final grade when there are far more important assignments in the course.

Flunking Out of College 101

...Out of College: 101 College is like looking both ways before you cross the street and then getting hit by an airplane. Many students may question themselves on rather they should drop out at least a couple times a week. It just is not for some people, but worry no more. I am going to explain how to flunk out of college swiftly and efficiently. No more crying at least three times a week and eating ramen noodles for every meal. Where one sits in the classroom says a lot about someone. First, sit in the very back of the classroom. This basically indicates no fascination in being there. This is great because shopping online and texting is so much easier. Oh, and falling asleep. This is so simple to do and requires completely no effort at all. It is one of the best things to do. All one has to do is stay out all night partying with friends. Partying can be the next step to the process of flunking out of college. Parties happen quite often in college so finding one isn't hard to do. Joining a sorority or fraternity can also guarantee to be invited to parties. Make sure not to be one of those boring people at parties. Learn how to do it, and do it well. Who cares if there is a test to study for the next day, stay out all night and don't go home until the sun is coming up. The main goal is to not know anything on the test so failure is basically a guarantee. Next, do not take many notes in class. Whatever the professor is saying is not useful in flunking out of college, so who...

Personal Responsibility

...When I think of personal responsibility and how it relates to college success, would one understand how imperative the two link together? Through many difficult obstacles in my college career, I have come to the final conclusion. Without owning up to my own responsibilities and being able to recognize mistakes, my college success would be limited. Personal responsibility is taking charge of my own actions and how I conduct myself according to my own beliefs, opinions, and how I perceive things. Study Habits

.... College students, especially freshmen, are a group particularly prone to stress (D'Zurilla & Sheedy, 1991) due to the transitional nature of college life (Towbes & Cohen, 1996). They must adjust to being away from home for the first time, maintain a high level of academic achievement, and adjust to a new social environment. College students, regardless of year in school, often deal with pressures related to finding a job or a potential life partner. These stressors do not cause anxiety or tension by themselves. Instead, stress results from the interaction between stressors and the individual's perception and reaction to those stressors (Romano, 1992). The amount of stress experienced may be influenced by the individual's ability to effectively cope with stressful events and situations (D'Zurilla & Sheedy, 1991). If stress is not dealt with effectively, feelings of loneliness and nervousness, as well as sleeplessness and excessive worrying may result (Wright, 1967). It is important that stress intervention programs be designed to address stress of college students. However, in order to design an effective intervention, the stressors specific to college students must be determined (Wright, 1967). The Student Stress Survey (SSS) was used to determine the major sources of stress among college students. The scale consisted of 40 potentially stressful situations. The scale addressed interpersonal, intrapersonal, academic, and environmental sources of stress. The items in the scale...

College entrance exams are considered to be the unique approach that the students are admitted by the colleges, and a significant factor that determines a student’s future development. They’re even regarded as one of the turning points in their lives. The similarity of the college entrance exams in China and that in the Western countries is that they are both the ways of selecting students for the colleges. Well, it's a must door for all the Chinese senior students to the higher education. It may be considered to be too exam-oriented, or too narrow and strict to the students, however it has last for decades. It is actually useful in choosing talented people. To take an even spectacular example, in order to get a good result, students must be hard working, considerable, insistent and knowledgeable, and these, are just what the society needs. In total, everything exists has a reason. I think the exam is workable in some way, but can still be improved. In China, more than half students take exams on June 17th and 18th, in China. In that day, many students march in the classroom to wait for the examinations. Whatever the weather is hot, they full of confidence and stress to write down their answers. Time Management

...am going to talk about in this paper. So do you find yourself daydreaming when you are studying? Time management is a lifesaver for college students. College students often find that time is the hardest goal to conquer. The way a person manages time effects the efficiency of their life. Time management can be a mastery of life. Returning to college after having been out of the school system for a long time can be a quite a challenge. For me it seems like there is too many tasks to complete and seldom enough time. How procrastination can affect time management. The ability to manage time may be the most valuable asset students can have. Do you find yourself daydreaming when you sit down to study? Do you stare into space after reading your textbook, trying to “absorb” the information? Or do you look at pictures of friends or family instead of doing the task in front of you? All of these may eventually lead to wasting time and frustration. Here are a few tips to help you concentrate better: Study in small blocks of time instead of long time periods. Try 60-minute blocks of time and take 10-minute breaks in between. Tell yourself before you begin to study. Each time you find your mind wandering, repeat this phrase. ...Anxiety in College Students Yasmin Kahsai Grand Canyon University: PSY-102 April 5, 2015 Anxiety In College Students Stress-induced anxiety is an all to common reality for college students. The pressure of suddenly having to map out the entire life when only weeks ago you had to ask permission to use the restroom, is some times just to much to handle. In the first year of college, students are often times away from home for the first time in their lives. They no longer have the support of their parents; financially or emotionally. In order to make up for the lack of financial support, students are forced to work while attending school. This alone is enough to lead to stress-induced anxiety, but that is not all that they have to deal with. Students must also deal with the pressure of making good grades in order to continue on in higher education. While trying to make good grades and balance work, it is not an uncommon thing for them to lose sleep. Insomnia has been known to lead to anxiety. Overall, the overwhelming pressure of adulthood, working to pay for school, maintaining good grades, and lack of sleep are enough to give any college student anxiety. ...Even though credit cards can be a source of paying for college-related expenses; credit card companies should not be on college campuses because most students will misuse the credit card, go into credit card debt and not realize the full financial hole they are in and struggle for years to pay off the debt. The first reason why credit card companies should not be on colleges marketing to college students is that it is very easy for a college student to misuse the new credit card. A college student most likely has limited financial means and a credit card could help today but hurt substantially more down the road. With a limited income, it would be very easy for the student to become financially dependent on the card. A 2009 Survey by Sallie Mae concluded the following. “The economic downturn has most Americans tightening their spending habits, but not all. College students are even more dependent upon credit cards, according to a survey conducted by Sallie Mae, the nation’s leading provider of student loans. The organization released its survey results last week in its National Study of Usage Rates and Trends. The study focused on undergraduate student’s ages 18 to 24 who were enrolled in public and private four-year colleges and universities during the spring of 2008.” [ (Phan, 2009) ] Another misuse of credit card spending occurs when the student is trying to fit into a social crowd among its peers. Many students feel a need to be part of socially acceptable “cool” crowd...
