Discuss Some of the Benefits and Drawbacks of Studying for a University Degree. Which Appear to Be More Persuasive?

...In this essay I will examine the benefits and drawbacks of studying for a university degree and will demonstrate which one outweighs the other. I will also start by defining what a university degree actually is. A degree can be defined as an academic diploma that is received from a college or university. It is an official certificate that a person gains after completing three to four years of study at an academic institution of higher education. The most common type of degree is called a ‘bachelors’ degree, which is also known as a first degree. Owning a degree qualifies a person for various professional fields. For some fields, for example the medical field, the occupations have titles for which a degree must first be obtained. To gain the title of ‘doctor’, a doctorate must be completed. This is an advanced graduate degree programme and is the highest form of degree. Other forms of degree include a master’s degree which is a course of study taken after a first degree is obtained. Many professions require at least a basic first degree. Fields such as medicine, science and law require an advanced degree and sometimes a doctoral degree. Some fields that require a basic degree or higher, include business and education. Possession of any type of degree can often be seen the degree holders name. For example John Smith BBA, this would stand for bachelor’s degree of business administration, or M.D. which would stand for doctor of medicine. Doctoral candidates require completion of...

College Should Be Free

...college be free? College is a great place to further an education and become certified or earn a degree. Many people don’t get to experience college not because they don’t want to but because they can’t afford it. According to College Data “in-state public college tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year averaged $22,826.” Grade school education is free to kids and paid for through tax payers, lottery, sponsors, and government assistants and so should college. To attend in state College should be free for anyone who has the grades and met the state requirements because not all families have the money, no one should be paying to better themselves and expand their knowledge, and college is not a guarantee of a job, due to this economy and job cuts. College is an important place in one’s life, its where all the growing up take place, a lot of responsibility is required, and where education is furthered to make a better future for oneself take place. Many kids are robbed from this opportunity because of the expense of college. My friend a straight A students didn’t have the financial backing in his house whole to attend any four year university, even with the help of financial aid he would have had to take out multiple loans within his first year of college, he strived and worked hard in school to make good grades to get into college to pursue his degree in his field of study to get a great job and take care of his family. It isn’t fair that not only my friend but many others are...

These people that were moved were coaches, parents, spectators and teachers. Rick Rilley goes into a story that had Tulsa on the map for something positive. The golf team was tied against Southern Methodist University at the end of 54 holes for the Western Athletic Conference championship. As there would be a sudden death playoff hole with 10 golfers to determine the conference champion Tulsa was in a bit of a predicament. Tulsa had to catch a 4:30 flight and the...

Pursue an Mba Degree

...Decision to Pursue an MBA Degree Decision to pursue MBA Program is a first step to reach my personal goal and start a new career. After my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science I was offered a job as IT Administrator to a well-known organization and never had an opportunity to think about further education. The decision to obtain an MBA requires a substantial commitment of money and time. However, there are many compelling reasons to pursue an MBA to get ahead in the business world. Below are some of the lines of reasoning that I want to mention: MBAs are internationally recognized Travel to many areas of the world, and most people have at least heard of the graduate degree known as the MBA. This makes it much more valuable than many other business degrees. For example, even though a Master's in Commerce may be a prestigious degree in some countries; other locations may not be familiar with the program. Having an MBA, which is recognized almost universally, will increase my ability to compete for jobs in more locations. MBAs can earn higher salaries One of the major reasons, as I have chosen to pursue an MBA is that it often allows graduates to earn a greater salary. Although the average starting salary for MBA graduates is influenced by the number of years of work experience they have prior to starting their degree, even those with fewer than three years of industry experience reportedly start out earning close to $70,000. This figure rises dramatically as graduates...

Career Plan: Reasoning Aptitude and Timeline

...Career Plan: Reasoning Aptitude and Timeline GEN/105 25 July 2013 Christopher Robinson Career Plan: Reasoning Aptitude and Timeline The goals that I have set to reach my career goals were first to find a college that fit my schedule. My second goal was that I needed to achieve a high grade point average while I was in school. My third goal was to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Business Management with a concentration in Supply Chain Management. My fourth goal was to find a job within my degree plan. My fifth goal was to become a manager of a major logistics company. Finding a College that fits my Schedule The specifics of my first goal were to locate a school that fit my schedule. I work a job that requires me to be away from home for days to weeks at a time. I needed a school that was flexible and accessible even when I was away. I looked into several colleges but only one appealed to me, and it was the University of Phoenix. This goal was not difficult because I knew what I wanted in a college and it aligned with my values. Some short term goals that helped me achieve this goal was first to narrow down my choices to 5 online colleges. I went online and just searched online colleges that had degrees in the field that I was looking to work. Another short term goal was to see which college was accessible away from home via phone or Ipad because I traveled a lot and the use of internet to my laptop would be little to none. I accomplished this task...

Juveniles Should Be Mandatory Sentence Without Parole

...Should juveniles who commit first or second- degree murder receive a mandatory sentence of life without parole? That is a question that many people are asking themselves. This is a very debatable question due to the fact that if a juvenile does change, then he/she wouldn't have a chance at a new life because of the life sentence. I believe they should be granted a second chance, but if they take that second chance for granted, then they should be sentenced to life without parole. On the other hand, there has been cases where a teen who was sentenced to life got a second chance, but decided to take it for granted for being immature and emotionally unstable. Many teens make reckless decisions while growing up, some don't know better but others do. Where I stand in this situation is that juveniles should not be sentenced to mandatory life sentences without parole. Not many...

This Is Where We Are.

...those who did not excel in high school a chance to start over, as well as people who cannot afford university tuition costs. Whether you choose a prestigious university or your local community college, having a college education could help you land a better job. Along with having success in the work field, a college education can benefit you internally and socially as well. With the job market the way it is, having a college degree automatically gives you a better chance in receiving a job over someone with only a high school diploma. Just having the college education puts you at better odds, but obtaining a degree is the best way to earn more money. In a 2005 article, it was stated, “The earnings of students who obtain a baccalaureate degree are 10% to 20% higher than the earnings of associate degree holders. In addition, Kane and Rouse found the economic returns associated with a community college degree to be roughly 15% to 25% higher than those associated with a high school diploma.” (Marcotte). This gives an example on the difference between a community college degree and a degree from a four-year university. Having either will likely lead to a person receiving a substantially larger income than someone who has only completed a high school education. If you think about it, would a hiring manager rather hire someone with the highest education completed being high school, or the applicant who has just graduated with an Associate’s degree? More than likely, the latter. The cost...

Cost of College

...Argumentative Essay Ever since you were little, your parents have been talking about this wonderful thing called college. They told you that you have to go there to get an education before you can get a good job. Many kids have dreamed of going to college, and being able to get the job of their dreams. By putting in hard work and dedication to good grades in high school, you had high hopes that you would be able to get into an Ivy League school. The American dream of being able to go to college to get a degree is sliding away from many people due to rising costs. With increasing tuition prices and job loss, the college dream is slowly and surely slipping away from many students and their families. The first step in the college process is to be able to afford the tuition and other expenses. Many families are unable to do so by themselves and depend on the help of financial aid and loans. Financial aid has recently been harder and harder to come by and loans are now harder to get. In 2000, the average gap between a financial aid offer and a family?s ability to pay for college tuition was $3,000.00. Since then, tuition has risen twenty one percent and shows every sign of continuing to rise with inflation (U.S. News and World Report, 53). If federal aid and federal loans are not easily accessible to families, how are they supposed to send their children to college? The financial aid system is meant to help needy students and their families, but the system is cracking under...

Personal Responsibility

...ourselves, and making decisions that affect the outcome of life. Most of the time understanding the consequences and how it will affect others is the key to making the right choices. Though less time will be spent focusing on home, I made a decision to make a career change into a new position to allow me the opportunity of obtaining a degree. This is important to achieve personal goals and maintain competitiveness in my organization, while allowing me to improve quality of life for my family. My career change permitted more time to focus on other opportunities. I have changed from an 80 hour work week with 70% travel to, a true 40 hour work week with less than 20% travel. This allows me now to devote less time traveling, permitting more time to focus on obtaining a degree. Obtaining a degree is important to achieve personal goals and maintain competitiveness in my organization. In the corporate world more people are pursuing higher levels of education to be competitive. This makes the climb to the top of the corporate ladder harder to achieve without a degree. “This attribute strongly highlights the benefits accrued to the student once a degree is in hand as it leads to a job promotion, job security, competitive edge, and one can become a “leader of the pack” in the workplace.” (“Attributes Used to Promote Adult,” 2010, p. 79). However it is not just for this reason that I am returning to school, I have the need to obtain the knowledge that I can use in my occupation. Even...

Someone with a high school diploma makes just $638” (GreatSchools Staff). An associate's degree is only two years of college. Some people only go for two years because that is all they need for the profession they want to proceed in. Aviation

...than as a hobby; a person who does something with great skill." These definitions could have been written with aviation in mind because it definitely has high standards, and the people who meet these standards certainly must exhibit great skill. Aviation professionals are not born, they are educated. With professional aviation's increasingly complex and high-technology environment, being an aviation professional, today and in the future, requires more than just knowing how to fly. Few of the major airlines require a college degree for employment, but in the past several years, more than 95 percent of the pilots hired have at least a four-year college degree. If you want an airline job, you stand a better chance if you are among the 95 percent with a degree than the 5 percent without one. Aviation is an exciting career field, and because you can earn an above-average income, competition for jobs is keen. Traditionally, military pilots often place first in the employment contest. Civilian pilots consider this unfair, but look at it from the airlines' pragmatic point of view. Military pilots are college educated, which means they've proven themselves in an academic environment. Employers know they will do well in the challenging training environment that is an ongoing part of any professional's career. Employers also know that military pilots have been trained to an...
