What skills are necessary for teamwork?

High performance team cannot live without good team players. These team members have some good common skills. Communication skill is one of the common skills that good team players possess. According to Driskell, “effective communication behaviors include exchanging information in a timely manner, acknowledgment of information, double-checking that the intent of messages was received, clarifying ambiguity, and the appropriate use of verbal and nonverbal cues.” (Driskell, 2006) With good communication skills, team members can exchange thoughts, ideas, and information efficiently. Decision Making skills are also fundamental skills for good team members. Driskell describes decision making skills as the ability to identify and assess problem, exchange information, give and evaluate solutions, and assess consequences.

According to Neil Kokemuller, listening skills also very important to the success of the team. Strong listening skills help team members better understand others’ ideas and show their support to other team members. Besides listening skills, cooperation skills also play a important role in a team. Neil Kokemuller defines cooperation as “a general skill that encompasses a helpful nature and willingness to participate actively within the team.” (Kokemuller, n.d.) The team will more likely to succeed when all team members are completely engaged in team tasks and exchanging ideas.

However, working successfully as a team is not as easy as it may seem. Effective teamwork certainly does not just happen automatically; it takes a great deal of hard work and compromise. There are a number of factors that must be in place to cohere together as a team and work seamlessly.   • Good leadership: Effective leadership is one of the most important components of good teamwork. The team’s leader should possess the skills to create and maintain a positive working environment and motivate and inspire the team members to take a positive approach to work and be highly committed. An effective team leader will promote a high level of morale and make them feel supported and valued. • Clear communication: Communication is a vital factor of all interpersonal interaction and especially that of a team. Team members must be able to articulate their feelings, express plans and goals, share ideas and see each other’s viewpoints. • Establishing roles: It is absolutely necessary for team members to understand what their role on the team is, what he/she is responsible for. Team Work

...Introduction The shift that has taken place today in the workplace in any organization has important implications for the skills that will be critical to the success of an individual in an organization. This shift involves increasing the emphasis on the group or team. Many factors are driving this shift. Technology is a primary force as tasks have grown too complex for individuals to tackle alone. In addition, competitive forces have led many organizations to flatten the organization by reducing the numbers of levels of middle managers. Shifting authority and responsibility down to the bottom level allows teams to take over functions that used to be done by management. On a macro scale, as organizations involve multiple businesses, multiple industries and multiple countries, new and complex issues are evolving that rely on numerous interdependent groups with decisions made by teams consisting of members of these various groups. Even without these forces, others have found that harnessing the potential power of the group can have a dramatic effect on productivity and job satisfaction. Today, most organizations embrace the notion of teams. Teams have become the core unit in many organizations. Part of this is based on the fact (and supported by research) that teams are more effective in solving problems and learn more rapidly than individuals. When it is working well, groups or teams can enhance problem solving and creativity, generate understanding, acceptance, support, and...

Teamwork

...Webster’s College Dictionary defines a team as “a number of persons associated in some joint action” and teamwork as “cooperative effort on the part of a group of persons acting together as a team or in the interests of a common cause”.1 Teamwork in a classroom teaches students the fundamental skills associated with working as a collective unit toward a common goal. When students are required to work in teams it introduces a variety of skills that will be valuable for students later in the workforce, such as communication, compromise and collective effort. In any type of group work, students must agree about who will handle various components of a project and collaborate using one another’s strengths to accomplish assigned tasks.2 Which often teaches time management, resource allocation and communication skills. Teamwork can push people to expand their skills and learn from one another in ways that might have never occurred had they not be placed on the same team. Teamwork can encourage members to learn to respect and appreciate each other as well as promote a sense of belonging.3 Working on a team forces team members to spread knowledge and to do things in a way that other people on the team can pick up if necessary. Teamwork also increases accountability. Pressure from peers is a powerful force. Particularly if you are working with people whom you respect and do not want to let down, the motivation to help your team succeed can override the lack in motivation that...

Worplace Diversity and Team Dynamics

...Dynamics Teamwork is the mantra of the business world for the new millennium. Organizations are realizing that collective problem-solving, in a team setting, enhances creative and critical thinking skills, thus elevating productivity. This paper will explore the characteristics of and differences between groups and teams. Additionally, workplace diversity relevance to team dynamics will be explored in an effort to better understand this phenomenon called teamwork. Groups Groups consist of two or more individuals who come together to achieve particular objectives. Work groups share information and make decisions that help members perform within each individual's area of responsibility. The group focuses on improving individual results. Work groups do not work together to achieve a communal goal, the result being that no positive synergy exists among members. Each member’s performance is the entirety of his or her contribution (Robbins & Judge, 2009). Teams Teams consist of a small grouping of people with complementary skills, working together to achieve a common purpose for which they hold themselves collectively accountable (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2009). Work team goals are focused on the collective performance of the members’, the result of which is mutual and individual accountability. Characteristics of high-performance teams include clear performance objectives, a shared sense of purpose, strong core values, the right mix of skills, creativity...

Leadership

...Teamwork “Teamwork coming together is a beginning, keeping together is a progress, working together is success”. Henry Ford. Teamwork is an intention of different people to work together for specific purpose in order to achieve the same aim. Team works are needed everywhere in all aspects of society. Also, teamwork is made to gather people who are interested in one thing, who have complementary skills, negotiable and who feel responsibility towards each other when doing the tasks that are spread between team members. Saying about the Role concept within teamwork it was firstly used to understand people’s behaviors in the environment. Relating Belbin’s theory of teamwork and team roles there are several types of roles that people in the team belong to. They are divided into three groups: Action makers, Social and Thinking oriented. Personally, every team member is important in the process of team work and the personality of every team member is affected to the team’s effectiveness. According to Belbin’s theory the discussion process of the team work goes through four steps: • Forming; • Storming; • Norming; • Performing. Our opinion towards this constructive cycle is that if the team passes through all mentioned steps above, then in the end it appears to be successful teamwork. As the topic or issue is formed, then discussed, shared opinions about this formation among each other, negotiated the meanings of every team member and come up with the same...

Speech About Esports

...Mr. Toastmaster, Fellow Toastmasters, and guests. How many of you play or played basketball? (they raise hands) Football? (hands) Soccer? (hands) Are there any I haven’t listed? (perhaps replies, if so ask “what” and ask for that) These are definitely games that people like to spectate that we call sports. One of my favorite sports was just broadcast on ESPN2, had a world-wide $10 million dollar tournament where the winners took home $5 million dollars. The players of this sport all did this without leaving their seat. I’m referring to electronic sports, or esports. I’m not just talking about playing a golf, basketball, or tennis game on the Wii. What I do mean is that there are video games out there that take all the main components of traditional sports: communication, training, and teamwork, and make them into their video game. People are playing sports without ever leaving their seat. Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome once again to Digital Sports! (Stanley Parable announcer saying this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRloyLtJ6r0) Let’s talk about the three things you will need to be able to play digital sports effectively: communication, training, and teamwork. Communication in esports is one of the most crucial skill areas. Think about all the things you rely on when playing a traditional sport--body language, hand signals, eye contact, speaking to each other. All of these thing are pretty much removed from esports. Now, it is a little different if you play professionally...

Leadership Practice and Theory

...questionnaire sets out to measure management and leadership skills and the style by asking behavioral and situational questions of different aspects in management and leadership. These behaviors are called competencies. According to the report, “competencies are sets of behaviors or behavioural repertoires encompassing skills, knowledge, abilities, and personal attributes.” As I was reading the questions, I did my best to answer them honestly so I can get the most accurate results possible. This is what I have learned. The most important thing that I have learned and which is also stated in the ‘Introduction” section is that, “Psychological test do not measure the whole you which is why they need to be interpreted in the context of other information about you.” With that in mind, I have reviewed and analyzed the report to see if it truly reflects my current management and leadership styles and behaviors. In the section titled, “Leadership Level,” my scores ranged from 5 to 8 with the average score of 6 on the CLQ key factor scale. This indicated that based on my responses, I’m just as effective as the average manager. The CLQ report suggested that I need to improve my management competencies and skills to have a competitive edge which will prepare me for more challenging management and leadership positions. I absolutely agree with this finding. Currently as a personal banker, I lack the ability to grow and improve my management skills because my current job description does not emphasize...

...Effective Teamwork Christy Hardee SOC/110 November 9, 2015 Larry Bohleber Effective Teamwork * What are the characteristics of effective teams? There are several characteristics to achieving effective teamwork. The first is having clear goals. This is necessary so that all team members understand the purpose and vision of the team. It is important to understand where the team is headed. People tend to support what they help to create. Team members who were involved in establishing the goals will work to achieve them. Next is defining roles within the team. It’s important for each member to understand their job function and for leaders to tap into the skills and talents of group members. One of most important characteristics in teamwork is having clear and open communication. Problems that emerge in groups can often be traced back to communication problems. Effective communication will keep a team informed and focused. Communication “breakdowns” can often be attributed to poor listening skills. It’s important to focus on hearing the message before forming our own conclusions about the message. Distractions can prevent us from giving out full attention to the speaker. Awareness of various decision making methods can help a team make efficient decisions. Team members contribute when appropriate, and member’s opinions are valued and sought. It is important when leaders define what type of participation they expect from members. Leaders help to create a climate...
