Peter Kolchin’s book, “American Slavery, 1619-1877” is a very controversial write. This is a massive subject in American history and it spans from the early 16 hundreds to the late 18 hundreds. Overall Kolchin does a good view of controversies relating to slavery and the reconstruction that occurs after.

The author orders this book in a time-like fashion. Meaning that he goes in order from the beginning of the slave era towards the end. It goes into great detail about the differences between the north and the south, and how the popularity had changed from time to time.

This read goes into the positions of many different parties during the slave era. Detail includes the position of the owner of the slaves, the slaves themselves, and non-owners of slaves. In the final parts of this book, Kolchin …show more content…
This includes social factors, religious factors, and economic factors which relates to the slaves, their owners, and families. This is my favorite part of the book, because facts and connections to everyone in the scene is important and eye opening.

Because slavery was a very debated and controversial issue, Kolchin had trouble relaying this information to the readers. This was very important because in today’s age, in my opinion it would be tough for someone to take in information about the support of slavery and how it was used in everyday life. Kolchin tackles this issue and does a good job covering the information. This helped me understand the topic better, and I enjoyed that about this book.

This book goes into great specific evidence and real life stories of slaves and how they lived during this time. Along with social and economic impact to the entire nation it is connected directly to the slaves. I enjoyed this read and the topic. In order to understand this book though, a few times I needed to re-read certain parts to understand what specifically Kolchin was trying to say to the
