The motion picture industry is a competitive business. More than 50 studios produce a total of 300 to 400 new motion pictures each year, and the financial success of each motion picture varies considerably. The opening weekend gross sales ($millions), the total gross sales ($millions), the number of theaters the movie was shown in, and the number of weeks the motion picture was in the top 60 for gross sales are common variables used to measure the success of a motion picture. Data collected for a sample of 100 motion pictures produced in 2005 are contained in the file named Movies. Table 1 shows the data for the first 10 motion pictures in this file.

TABLE 1 | PERFORMANCE DATA FOR 10 MOTION PICURES | | | | | | | Motion Pictures | Opening Weekend Gross Sales ($millions) | Total Gross Sales ($millions) | Number of Theaters | Weeks in Top 60 | | | | | | | | | | | Coach Carter | 29.17 | 67.25 | 2574 | 16 | Ladies in Lavender | 0.15 | 6.65 | 119 | 22 | Batman Begins | 48.75 | 205.28 | 3858 | 18 | Unleashed | 10.9 | 24.47 | 1962 | 8 | Pretty Persuasion | 0.06 | 0.23 | 24 | 4 | Fever Pitch | 12.4 | 42.01 | 3275 | 14 | Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire | 102.69 | 287.18 | 3858 | 13 | | | | | | Monster in Law | 23.11 | 82.89 | 3424 | 16 | White Noise | 24.11 | 55.85 | 2279 | 7 | Mr. and Mrs. Smith | 50.34 | 186.22 | 3451 | 21 | | | | | |

Use the tabular and graphical methods of descriptive statistics to learn how these variables contribute to the success of a motion picture. Include the following in the report. 1. Tabular and graphical summaries for the Number of Theaters

Jamie Turner : Case Analysis - 4 Problems

...himself into this particular predicament? Solution: The following reasons form the root cause of Turner being so indecisive about his position at MLI towards the end of the case: Firstly, Jamie Turner earlier worked at Wolf River, where departments such as control, budgeting, planning and similar tasks were well supported. When he was allowed autonomy and was all on his own, he could not get enough time to prepare himself for all the challenges that were posed for his position and he ended making hasty decisions based on his prior experience. Secondly, his differences with Cardullo regarding their views on the cash flow problem, pricing halogen bulbs below the break-even point with reduced margins, and their other arguments left Turner in distaste and anger. Turner’s strategy of reducing production cost and lesser margins did not go well with Cardullo who wanted higher margins for his products. Moreover, Turner was initially indecisive about joining MLI given the financial situation of the company and other complexities that a merger had created. Also, he was not really keen to go into industrial marketing. He did not weigh the positives and negatives completely before accepting the offer at MLI and started repenting his decision after just a few months into the company. All these things along with the problem of dealing with Julie Chin, lead to this particular predicament. 2.  What did Pat Cardullo and Jamie Turner each initially bring to the situation at MLI that should seem...

...big business in Tennessee, and most of the scrap metal is shipped out of state. Tennessee was concerned that much of the metal being sold to dealers in the state was stolen, so the legislature passed a law designed to give law enforcement a better opportunity to determine whether metal on dealers’ lots was stolen. The new law included, among other provisions, requirements for screening of metal sellers, recordkeeping requirements, and a 10-day waiting period between when purchased metal could be resold by a dealer. The Scrap Recyclers Association sued the state, arguing that the law violated the Commerce Clause and also the Fifth Amendment. The district court upheld the law and the Recyclers appealed. Leadership Case Problem

...Week 5 Case Assignment Read Ch. 7's Leadership Case Problem A - "Ray, The Empowered Athletic Club Director" pp. 242-243.  Analyze Questions 1-3. 1. How effective is Larry’s approach to empowering Ray to boost enrollment? I would say that Larry’s approach to empowering Ray to boost enrollment wasn’t effect at all. Larry told Ray, “Ray you are empowered as the manager to boost enrollment working within your advertising budget. Boosting enrollment is your responsibility, not mine….” With that being said I would say that isn’t much of an empowerment speech or boost. He should have given him some ideas of how to get more people in because it was clear that Ray was doing everything to try. There isn’t much Larry can do to empower him to boost enrollment, with Ray already putting out flyers, advertising on social media, as well as advertising word-of-mouth. Like Ray said they are competing with all of the other fitness clubs around the town so will be hard to get more people to join Modern Fitness. 2. Which political tactic or tactics do you recommend Ray to use to deal effectively with his empowering boss? I would recommend a few political tactics for Ray to use to deal effectively with his empowering boss. One would be changing the sales pitch, this is what draws in the gym members. His boss wants the number of gym enrollment to increase and this could help. With a great sales pitch it could have people come in to see what the gym has to offer. Secondly, get the...

Julia Case Problem

...Assignment #3: Case Problem "Julia's Food Booth" Complete the "Julia's Food Booth" case problem on page 109 of the text. Address each of the issues A - D according the instructions given. (A) Formulate and solve an L.P. model for this case. There are three products or variables in this problem that we must consider for purchase. X1 = number of pizza slices Julia should purchase X2 = number of hotdogs Julia should purchase X3 = number of barbecue sandwiches Julia should purchase. The reason why Julia is having a booth is to make some money. She wants to maximize her profit that she can get from selling the hotdogs, pizza, and barbeque sandwiches. The first thing to do is find the profit that Julia will make per Item. To find that per Item price, the cost of the Item will be subtracted from the selling price. Pizza: Julia can buy a pizza that contains 8 slices for 6$. That means each slice of pizza will cost her $0.75. She plans to sell each piece for 1.50. $1.50-$0.75= $0.75 profit Hot dog: $1.50 - $0.45 = $1.05 profit Barbecue Sandwiches: $2.25 - $0.90 = $1.35 profit The objective function can now be written since we have found the potential profit of each food item. The objective of this function is to maximize Z(profit). Z= $0.75x1 + $1.05x2 + $1.35X3 The Budget is one thing that has to be taken into consideration. Julia has $1,500 on hand to purchase and prepare food for the first home game. A constraint must be...

Case Problem B

...1. Why is this case included in a chapter about charismatic and transformational leadership? a. This case deals with charismatic and transformational leadership because Heather will have to turn around a troubled organization. Turnarounds can be applied to organizations of all sizes. 2. What aspects of transformational leadership should Heather emphasize in her approach to rehabilitating Willow Pond? a. Heather should most likely begin with an analysis of what changes need to be made, as she has already done. Next, she should work with staff members to sell them on the importance of change. Adopting a long-range perspective about survival would be helpful, as would be building trust. In recognition of the fact that Willow Pond would have limited funds for bringing about change, Heather should focus resources where change is needed the most, such as improved guest care. 3. How might emphasizing the charismatic aspects of her personality help Heather bring about the necessary changes? a. Willow Pond is probably not in a position to offer substantial financial bonuses to workers who help bring about the changes necessary for the assisted-living home to survive. She may therefore need to rely more on inspiring workers with the charismatic aspects of her personality. Heather can at least prompt workers at the home to understand how positive changes in the home will enhance their working conditions. 4. Why might the job at Willow Brook prove to be a wonderful career opportunity...

...their craft. The vast majority of us are thinkers; we are curious problem solvers who believe that our ability to benefit our agencies is limited only by the latitude we are given. It is understandable then that we should seek out more opportunities to apply our skills and make more positive impacts within our jurisdictions. It is this general attitude that led us to get involved in investigating cold cases. How We Got Started Mark had, for several years, been consulting with our Coroner’s Division as a forensic anthropologist. During this time he came to learn that there were numerous coroners’ cases in which the identity of the decedent was unknown. These cases were kept in three-ring binders on a shelf in the Sergeant’s office. Over the years, in the course of this forensic work, we would discuss these cases and the progress that was being made on them. The conversation usually ran along the lines of us asking “any luck with that 1980 homicide victim?” and the sergeant answering “well, we’ve gotten so many new cases that I haven’t been able to even look at it yet.” This went on for a few years and through two different sergeants. One day we, as a crime analysis unit, were brainstorming about how we could broaden our “client base”, as it were. We had been successful in integrating ourselves into our Investigations Bureau and had been involved in numerous major cases. And, of course, we had always been active in producing tactical...

Business Case

...BUSINESS CASE Presented to the Accountancy Department De La Salle University In partial fulfillment Of the course requirements In ACCTBA2 (C33) March 2, 2015 A stakeholder is typically concerned with an organization delivering intended results and meeting its financial objectives. In general, a stakeholder can be one of two types: internal (from within an organization) or external (outside of an organization). The stakeholders in this situation are Lanie Marquez and Tim Rodriguez who are also partners in the retail distribution business and their capital contributions are as follows P500,000 and P300,000 respectively they are an internal stakeholder since they are also the owners. The total Capital of both stakeholders is P800,000 and with a monthly salary for both partners at P15,000 on the assumption that both of them will contribute to manage the business equally. Assuming that both managed the business equally the total salary for the year for Lanie and Tim are P180,000 each. They share profit and loss equally and no interest will be given on capital contributed. The problem for this situation is that Lanie is starting to get concerned with the behavior of her other partner Tim. He only manages the business 50% of the time, which will mean that his salary of P15,000 will need to decrease by also 50% since he does not manage the business equally with his partner. Written Case Guidelines for Mktg 639

...Participants Sect 01 From: Dr. Keith C. Jones Re: Written Case Project Guidelines In addition to the Live Case, students will work on “written cases”. These cases are designed to provide the students the opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of all marketing related topics and issues. Each student, individually, is required to prepare a 2 to 3 page single spaced typed solution to the case. The solution should be in the format of an executive memo and be very strategic action oriented. If there are questions at the end of the case, unless otherwise directed, questions should only be used as guidelines. Answering only those questions will not be appropriate. The write-up is to be a “management directive” for the company. It should specifically state what the actions of the company should be to operate within the specific situation. This should not be a recantation of the case. On the case days, students will discuss each of their solutions in a simulated boardroom environment. There is no one set solution to the case. The success in this situation for the student is his or her ability to support their recommendations. Students should provide support as to why they feel their individual solution is appropriate. Students are not to “update” the case. Do not assume the actions taken from the time of the writing of the case by the company are the appropriate solutions/approaches to the case. This can be misleading and create myopia. Each write-up should...
