Multitasking Influences Academics

In her article ‘ Multitasking influences Academics’, Nizia Alam describes how multitasking affects student’s ability to focus and why multitasking has a negative impact on student’s grade. The author starts giving the example of a student who cannot concentrate even when he knows that he has a test the next day. This example helps to explain Fred Green’s hypothesis; students are aware that they are wasting time on social media, but they cannot stop doing that. Another point mentioned in the article is that not all the student admit they are multitasking; to make this point more clear, Nizia refers to a recent study, that study argue that this student generation think that most of the things they do are correct; also they do not agree with the idea that social media can not be managed by them. They think everything is controlled. Nzia then introduces multitasking as the action to do more than one thing simultaneously. She makes reference to Moktharii’s comparison: it is not a problem when a person does two simple things, the problem is when both actions require the brain’s concentration to process the information. Finally, the author stresses the consequences of multitasking in student’s grades.
I think this article reflects a reality. On my point of view, multitasking can be positive and negative depending on the context. It is positive when the objective is to produce quantity and it is negative when the purpose is to get a quality. As an example, I will give my own experience; I worked in a restaurant, and my boss asked me to learn all the services that the restaurant offers. When the restaurant was busy I did not have to focus on one thing, there were many people, so I had to make many things at the same time. As I mentioned, it is negative too. It is hard to me to stop using my phone; when I am trying to focus on homework or reading I am always checking my phone. I do not text a lot, what I do is to check social media like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and I see my pictures edit them to post, and listen music simultaneously. Last term my grades where not as good as I hoped; it was because of the time that I wasted using my phone in comparison whit the time that I did not spend focusing on my responsibilities.
‘ Multitasking influences academics’ is an article that helps to know more about how it can impact on student’s grades. Again, as a student I can say for sure that if the goal is to get good grades it is impossible to do that when our brain is managing many things simultaneously.

Casual Wear

...Michelle Lyda Jessica Hutchman English 113 9 November 2011 Casual Wear In the fast-paced world of today’s news and media, the true meaning and emotion of many leading stories is lost in the endless reel of current events. James Merrill constructs his poem, “Casual Wear,” in a similar fashion; the first eight lines of the poem distantly describe a female tourist and a male terrorist, not as people, but as statistics. It is only in the final two lines of the poem that Merrill injects any emotion into the work and connects the two seemingly unrelated individuals. In “Casual Wear,” Merrill uses contrasting viewpoints to convey both the resolution of the terrorist and the direness of the death of the tourist. Most of “Casual Wear” focuses on “your average tourist” and “your average terrorist;" it is not until the last two lines that the poem reveals, indirectly, that the terrorist is responsible for killing the woman, who is given the title, in the last two words of the poem, “wife” (Merrill 907). The unexpected outcome provides the reader with the fierce shock of reality on a personal level. Since the only name given to the woman is “wife” and the odds were “1 to 910 against her strolling past the Embassy,” the reader is given the impression that this is something that could happen to anyone, anywhere (Merrill 907). The shift in tone from detached to very personal provides the reader with the stark contrast between a generalized newscast and the very personal level on...

Dramatic Irony in Casual Wear

...Jordan Vickers English 101 3/1/15 Dramatic irony is a form of writing where the intended meaning of the words are very different from the actual meaning. The poems “Casual Wear” by James Merrill and “The ABC of Aerobics” by Peter Meinke are both examples of dramatic irony. James Merrill uses dramatic irony to satirize the wife tourist’s fancy designer clothes being worn by someone who could possibly die due to a terrorist act. Peter Meinke uses dramatic irony to satirize the fact that the protagonist runs for exercise but is also making fun of exercise in the poem. “Casual Wear” is written at first with a detached tone, then the tone changes to personal. “The ABC of Aerobics” is written with a solemn tone. James Merrill uses dramatic irony to satirize the wife tourist’s designer jeans and that she doesn’t know she will die. In the line “Signed with a Flourish, like the dead wife’s jeans,” the speaker is satirizing specifically the claim of responsibility from the terrorist, by comparing it to the fancy designer jeans. “Claiming Responsibility,” demonstrates verbal irony because the speaker is saying that the terrorist is claiming responsibility without actually taking responsibility. “People... of colored mist,” at the end of “Casual Wear,” the reader is left with empty, meaningless people. Peter Meinke uses dramatic irony to satirize the fact that the protagonist runs for exercise but is also making fun of exercise in the poem. The quote, “I join in despair knowing my arteries...

Almost every young person has at least one casual hook up under their belt yet it is still considered to damaging towards psychological well-being. She states in the article that scholar, health professional and the media all express concerns that hooking up leads to depression, anxiety, or low self-esteem. Most studies of casual sex as far as well-being go as such. They take people with at least one hookup and compare there well-being to people who have never had a hookup. These studies yield results that are all over the place. The hookup groups can have higher depression or lower self-esteem than the no-hookup group. This result is usually seen among women. Another possible result is the hookup group may have lower depression and higher self-esteem. This particular result is usually seen among men. Very often there may be no such different between the two groups. With such mixed results it can be often interrupted that the relationships between the two things you are focusing on in your experiment is not straightforward. When dealing with such as casual sex and well-being not all hookups have the same potential to harm or benefit well-being as well not all who engaging in these are equally affective both in a harmful or beneficial way. With this relationship there are individual, self-personal, and social factors...

I like to believe that I live with personal responsibility every day just to live happily and to help me succeed in my goals. I have set goals in the past and achieved them using my experience as a female veteran and as an adult. It has been proven that if you don’t have a grip on your responsibilities, then you don’t have a grip on your own self-esteem and self worth (Rothbaum, Morling, & Rusk, 2009).   When an individual that does not have personal responsibility, their personal life could really lack fulfillment and pleasure in doing things. That person that has not realized that creating your own personal responsibility, you could live to your full potential and having everything you have ever wanted on a mental level and on a material level. When you lack a main aspect to live the right way, you cannot become satisfied with your life and that you are not doing anything to take charge of the problems you have acquired along the way from your incompetence. ...3. MARKETING & ADVERTISING Developing a Professional Presence • By yenhui • Feb. 1, 2012 • 2028 Words • 21 Views PAGE 1 OF 9 Professional presence Professional presence is a dynamic blend of poise, self confidence, control, and style that empowers us to be able to command respect in any situation. Once acquired, it permits us to project a confidence that others can quickly perceive the first time they meet us. The importance of making a good first impression A positive first impression can be thought of as the first step in building a long-term relationship. The Primary Effect The development of professional presence begins with a full-appreciation of the first impression. The tendency to form and retain impressions quickly at the time of an initial meeting illustrates what social psychologist call a primacy effect in the way people perceive one another. The general principle is that initial information tends to carry more weight than information received later. First impressions establish the mental framework within which a person is viewed, and information acquired later is often ignored or reinterpreted to coincide with this framework. The First Few Seconds When two people meet, their potential for building a relationship can be affected by many factors. Within a few moments, one person or the other may feel threatened, offended or bored. Assumptions versus Facts The impressions you form of another person during the initial contact...

A Research Study on the Dinescape Factors Differences Between Leading Fast Food and Casual Dining Restaurants in the Philippines

...The researchers conducted the study to identify the significant DINESCAPE factors of fast food and casual dining restaurants that influence the overall customer rating/satisfaction and to recommend what DINESCAPE factors to improve on in fast food and casual restaurants based on the significant factors defined. Random respondents were asked if they had experienced dining in all the six subject restaurants and then were given survey questionnaires. Sample size n was computed using the multiple regression sample size calculator. From that, the number of observations was also dependent on the sample size. The computed sample size was 103 however, a total of 45 respondents were acceptable by using multiple regression analysis because according to Hair, Anderson, Tatham, & Black (1995), in order to maximize the number of observations per variable, the minimum ratio of five observations per independent variable should be utilized. The relationship of various DINESCAPE factors and overall satisfaction were determined using different statistical tools like descriptive Statistics, multiple regression analysis, and correlation analysis using the SPSS software. By using multiple regression analysis, it showed that for fast food restaurants not all of the DINESCAPE factors turned out to be significant. The most number of specific factors that were significant is three. For Jollibee and McDonald’s, there were no significant factors. For Chowking, only three specific factors...

...AN ANALYSIS OF BUSINESS CASUAL DRESS CODES Renee Kare Oke November 24, 2015 Establishing corporate business casual dress codes requires both sensitivity and awareness of all the legal ramifications that such codes bring with them. Factors such as whether or not a job requires a uniform or requires certain attire for safety reasons can be extremely important in setting a dress code policy and in being able enforce it. Establishing guidelines A policy manual should include all specifications regarding dress codes, including the more relaxed dress code known as business casual. If your company’s policy manual does not precisely define what is considered “acceptable” business code standards have been lowered due to vague guidelines, you will have a much more difficult time enforcing any guidelines later. EMPLOYEES RESPONSIVENESS If employees are convince that their image and dress directly affect the company’s bottom line, they are more likely to be motivated to adhere to stricter dress code guidelines. If they know that a specified workday, such as a Friday, can be a day to relax their dress, they might consider it a reasonable trade-off to the stricter guidelines enforced during the other workdays. A professional image consultant from Dress for Success Inc. could conduct some workshops to educate employees regarding the importance of professionally even when the standard is business casual. ...To: Michael Harding Subject: Reaction to Casual-Dress Policy Cc: Michael, After the inquiry you provided I have looked over the questions regarding the dress code and have provided some information pertaining to each question raised by Mr. Laughton. • Employees should be allowed to wear dark wash jeans on dress down days provided they do not have rips or holes. Shirts should cover midriffs and shoulders and represent employees with an element of class. • Restricting body art and piercings would help give the employees a polished look and would allow for employees to make a professional first impression on clients. • Supervisors need to inform employees when their clothing is inappropriate. This can prevent the same employees from having similar problems in the future. Supervisors might find it helpful to have a specific set of guidelines to refer employees to. • With detailed guidelines it would be possible for employees to have casual dress days. Employees need to remember they are representing the company. • One advantage of a dress up policy is that employees are likely to look acceptable even if they bend the rules. A dress up policy would also increase the reputation of the company because it will appear more professional. A dress-down policy simply confuses employees about what is considered appropriate. Casual dress policy can may simply cause more problems within the organization. I think you will find it most appropriate and in the best interest...

...Mango has ditched the glitz in favor of more casual attire like that from Spanish rival Inditex SA, the world’s biggest seller of apparel and owner of the Zara brand. The change has helped Mango outpace Inditex in Spain’s 16.2 billion-euro ($21 billion) clothing market. “We had gone way too far with our focus on clothes for parties and events,” said Enric Casi, general manager of the Barcelona-based retailer. “Not even our employees wore Mango.” The casual push wasn’t the only lesson Mango took from Arteixo, Spain-based Inditex as it sought to address a decline in profit of almost 60 percent in the two years through 2011. That year, Isak Andic, the founder, chairman, and owner of almost 100 percent of the company, stepped back into a stronger day-to-day management role to help reformulate strategy. Since then, Mango says, the chain has cut prices by about 20 percent across the board, bringing them closer to Zara’s. And the company has stepped up expansion outside of crisis-weary Spain and placed more emphasis on the fast-fashion model that has helped Inditex prosper. “Mango is emulating Zara as much as it can,” said Luis Benguerel, an equity trader at Interbrokers in Barcelona. “It needs to follow a successful business in order to fix its mounting problems and achieve the type of growth Inditex has seen.” Fourth-Richest Two years ago, about 70 percent of Mango’s revenue came from party and event clothing and 30 percent from casual wear. Now, it’s the other way round, Casi,...

Reducing Risk

...Assessment 1- Reducing Risk, Company: R.M Williams Functional RM Williams clothes and boots are steeped in history and the company has been trading since 1932 and has coined itself as “The Bush Outfitter”. Their functionality has always been core to their business. RM Williams is unique as they manufacture, distribute and retail their products and brand. They have been Australian designed and made, with high quality materials and great cuts. At the launch of Regional Express Airlines (or REX as it is known), the staff, Pilots, and flight attendants all wore RM Williams clothing and footwear. This moved RM Williams from just country clothing consumed by country people to clothing consumed by business people, and a business. Not only was the airlines bringing country people to the cities, it was bringing their fashion too. Perhaps RM Williams was expanding their target market from predominantly rural and country people to city people, and further segmentation to the urban young professional. The target market shift may have been due to economic forces – RM Williams looking for more stability from a city market, not just from people from the land, who had good seasons and bad. What was once a utilitarian need being met, may now be a hedonic need being met – or both. Physical The distribution of RM Williams clothing and boots has also changed with the times. From its humble beginnings of a mail order business, to only in a limited amount of stores and presence in Myers...

The judge also asked the defendants if there was anything they had to say in support of their admission to whatever program they were applying for, and usually granted the program and a continuance for (usually) one year. Pretty much all of the cases we witnessed were like this. My most note-worthy impressions definitely started with how casually everyone was dressed. Walking from the parking garage to the courthouse, we saw a man in jeans and a button-down dress shirt, with fairly nice shoes. I thought that was casual, only to be later surprised when we got to the courtroom to find that most of the people in...

Dressing the Part

...you look while around others. If a person is going to an interview business casual attire is the best dress code to a standard dress policy. The major parts of dressing the part for an interview whether in person or on the internet you should use punctuality, attire should be presentable and netiquette should be simple and clear. Having a business casual dress code means that your clothes is to be ironed, and neat and take a good care of your hygiene. If a male was to dress for and interview his attire should require Khakis, or dress slacks, button down shirt, and dress shoes. As for females attire should consist of Khakis, or dress slacks, skirts, blouses, and a dress that is appropriate for a job interview. Female should also wear sensible shoes that are comfortable in to wear all day. Corporate casual wear consists of slacks (other than jeans). As for men they can wear casual chino pants, polo shirt, dress sandals, and a jacket. For women a sweater, dresses, blazers, and skirts. The four points to attire and business etiquette is punctuality, attire, table manners, and netiquette. For starters punctuality is a way to show courtesy and respect for others. Being tardy for work will lead to stress on yourself and the waiting party that are counting on you to be on time. Your attire is always about looking the part for the position you are applying for. But coming into an interview business casual attire would be the best route to go. Especially if you are going into an interview...
