Topic 1: Discussion Question 1
Read Lake and von Baeyer's article, “Tips for Successful Students." Also, review the characteristics of a successful student as explained in the lecture.
As you consider these, which is your strongest characteristic? Why? How will this characteristic help you to become a successful student in your program of study?
I have always said that I am responsible for my own education. We only get out of school what we put into it. The instructor is there to present the information and provides a framework for understanding. It is my job as a student to fill in the spaces with my own understanding. I can clarify my understanding by asking questions, which I am poor at doing, and by doing research, which I do very well. I am not a good questioner. So, I really feel that my strongest characteristic is my responsibility and accountability.
The best instructors I’ve had are the ones deemed “intimidating”. The same is true for my work environment. The best leaders were always a little scary to me. But once I got past the intimidation factor, I found that they actually had the most things to teach me. And that is when I would ask questions!
Secondary characteristics that will help me be successful are my time management and note taking. I am forever writing things down. I find that if I hand write something, there is a connection between the writing of the information and my recall of it later. So if I want to remember something, I write it down. That tends to save me time and trouble later. This is true in both the classroom and my unit at work. My note taking allows me to manage my time better on the floor. Because I have written down what was said in report, who has dressing changes and who needs focused assessments, I am more likely to be prepared with all supplies needed when I enter a patient’s room. That alone, being prepared, has saved me so much time when working that I find I have more time to chart and can get out on time. Which management just loves!
There was one line in the lecture that really struck home for me when I read it. It states “Values public service and altruism over personal financial gain.” Several of my nursing friends, spread across the country, just had a discussion about this on Facebook last week. So many of us do what we do because we cannot picture ourselves doing anything else. I, for one, continue to go to work each day knowing that this could be the day that my heart breaks. Or bursts with pride. I am a rehab nurse, and I currently have three hospice patients. I am humbled by my patients who choose me to be the one that they talk to about how they feel as they face their own mortality. The trust placed in me is priceless. You cannot get into this work for the money, because you cannot put a value on the trust placed in us as nurses.
Lastly, I want to say that I have taken several online and hybrid classes in the past and they are my absolute FAVORITE!! I do very well in this environment, so if any of you are struggling, message me and I will help you all I can!

They understand good and bad grades in a general way, and they sense that they should attend classes, but that is where their knowledge begins and ends. Most instructors know and can tell you what a good student is - and is not. A good student is not necessarily the most intelligent individual in the class. The following is a list of some acceptable characteristics of good students. This list is a description of what a hard-working student does and what a teacher likes to see. By learning these characteristics, you may better understand the day-to-day and class-to-class behavior of successful students. The idea is to provide you with guidelines you can follow which will help you get down to the business of becoming a serious, successful student. Firstly, Successful students attend classes regularly. They are on time. They listen and train themselves to pay attention. Successful Online Learning

...Online learning has become one of the largest growing educational systems in America. Not only in America, but it has also spread to other parts of the world as well. In a recent study by New York Times, more than 500,000 Americans take online courses. According to collegeclasses.com, the first online course was known as “correspondence courses” and began in the 1700’s with pamphlets and textbooks that were sent to the students. However, the success of an online student isn’t something that comes easily but is earned through self-discipline and other vital characteristics. According to the article, “Individual Factors and Successful Learning in a Hybrid Course” by Kelly Arispe and Robert J. Blake, success in online courses is a hybrid language. With this in mind, Blake and Arispe point out what the five main important personality traits to contain, which are, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, and neuroticism. Before Arispe and Blake go too in-depth, a common question may be, what is a hybrid class? A hybrid class is “a course where a ‘substantial proportion of the content is delivered online [a course that] typically uses online discussions, and [one that] typically has a reduced number of face-to-face meetings” involved (pg.4). However, even though certain personality traits do play a role in the success of learning, success also relies on the learner’s preferences as well. According to Blake, “It is important to know which types of learners thrive...

Proverbs 1:5 says “Let the wise listen and add to their learning and let the discerning get guidance” (NIV). Knowledge is power and I believe God wants us to pray and search for information about the college we are supposed to attend and most importantly if we are able to attend online. Ecclesiastes 10:10 states, “If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success”(NIV). When choosing to go to college online, the student must have strong personal and learning characteristics along with certain factors that will help make the online student successful. Summary The article that I chose to read was ‘Student Preparation For Distance Education’, by Mark Taormino. It was very enlightening and it talked about some great points to achieve successfulness with online learning. One of the points that the article talked about was having a strong personal characteristic such as integrity and to be motivated. The definition for integrity is to be honest and fair and to be complete or whole. Integrity is one of the major keys while on this journey. Who Is to Blame

...makes a student successful? Some would say success is based on the determination of the student or how well of an educator a teacher is. However, society is evolving and focusing on the family unit as being a highly influential factor in the academic career of a student. A person spends between 12-16 years of life in an academic environment. Researchers are examining various theories as to why students may or may not be in school and in furthering their education. However, many people are beginning to feel that the parents of a student are responsible for the academic success or failure of their particular student. One role that parents need to play in the success of their child is enforcing the lessons the child has learned in school at home. By doing simple things like going over the work and making sure the students fully understands the material, and by correcting his or her homework is a helpful way for the parent to enforce the school lessons. The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company known as MetLife states “Nine in ten teachers and principals believe that strengthening ties among schools and parents is very important for improving student achievement.” Many parents do not take the time to review a child’s homework and by doing this simple procedure many parents would be able to help their child succeed better in school. Joyce Flood of the Illinois Board of Education spoke on a review of “The relationship between parent involvement in the home and student......
