Comparing Kant And St. Augustine's 'Norman Gillespie'

According to the reading Norman Gillespie is classified as a moral holist. Unlike Kant and St. Augustine, Gillespie believed in the situational dependence of moral decisions. Gillespie's believes in 'rules of thumb', but not absolute rules. Going back to last weeks discussion on situational dependence, Gillespie believes that in certain instances, we possess the moral 'right' to break absolute rules if the cost to the person making the decision is greater than the cost to others. In the case of a person fleeing to your home in hopes of evading a person intent on hurting them.
