The relationship of man with nature in the exploration of consciousness, society and love. Displayed by Edward carpenter’s poems ‘april’ and ‘By the shore’ Edward carpenter’s poems ‘April’ and ‘By the shore’ are key representatives of mans relationship with nature. ‘he was an English socialist poet, anthologist, early gay activist and social philosopher.’(1). Carpenters rhetoric throughout his life and works encompasses the intrinsic and symbolic intertwining of the physical reality of nature in the exploration of consciousness, societal structures and critique. The comparative value of both poems to each other and the wider world is clear through the apparent symbolism, progressive connotations and stylistic approach displayed. The main …show more content…
It can be arguably said that this ever present sexual connotation within his work is a communication of his political views involving gay rights. This is supported by biographical works on Edward carpenter ‘Edward carpenter… remembered now as a pioneer o gay rights campaigning, living openly with his lover George Merril and writing barely about it at the same time that Oscar Wilde was imprisoned.’ (3). This shows carpenters clear dedication to his beliefs and his ability to use nature in symbolism of this. Not only showing his love and views it also makes clear his involvement and passion or the natural world.‘ I pour my soul out to it in love’ represented by this continued metaphor is Carpenters obvious passion for nature and its prevalence in his life. He has a clearly involvement and appreciation to nature displaying its importance to man. This manifests itself into carpenter becoming one with nature and the consciousness of the world, ‘the warm breath of each life ascends past me;’ this clear and physical response to the microcosm he has created displays his involvement both physically and mentally acting to emphasise his love or all which surrounds him. These shared ideas and themes displayed in both poems are representative of the complex relationship between man and nature displayed through love, consciousness and its wider involvement in society. The two poems also display contrasting elements in the perception of nature, depth of exploration into consciousness and the finite expression of time and lie. The expression and image created o nature in ‘April’ is both softer and warmer than that expressed in ‘By the shore’. This may act as symbolism of the volatility and natural changeability of the world both in nature and wider society. ‘April’s positive and gentleness in its portrayal of nature is clear from the

Resources Analysis

...I. Introduction Greetings to everyone in receipt of this briefing hope your research processes are coming along. It has been brought to my attention that we may encounter some resource concerns with this global launch. The fabrics we use domestically cannot be shipped or exported so we need to address this concern. As far as textiles go we will need to look into alternatives for the Italy global expansion. Seen there are various concerns with resources that often come up with global expansion we will need to look into and address them all during this briefing. One of our board members use to run a textile plant in China so we will see if they still have contacts and that very well could solve and address our textile issues but not the others we may face. II. Global Strategy concerns for Resources The global expansion of a business opens untapped opportunities for the organizations growth especially in markets that are emerging and or contain fast-growth. With the opportunities that global expansion brings it also has a particular set of challenges associated with it; changes such as market-entry strategy, supply chain sourcing, building a consumer base, and manufacturing. On top of all of this you need to add financing, taxation, human resources, textiles, technology (where needed), natural resources, managerial resources considerations and so on. It becomes trickier and trickier. So let’s discuss some of the concerns we need to address with global strategy and available resources...

Compare And Contrast One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

...In the novel “One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest” what sticks out to me the most is that the narrator is not the protagonist. You would think at first that Chief Bromden the one who is a “Chronic” would have a flawed mental state. However that is not the case because Bromden is adept at describing what he sees. He also sees the true intention of Nurse Ratched and pretends that he is deaf. What is surprising is that McMurphy the new admission is very happy to be in a hospital for the insane. I still don’t know whether it’s all a play to get on the other patient good side or part of his true character. He notices that Chief Bromden is not really deaf and winks to Bromden that he knows. This tells me that McMurphy is someone who is not easily fooled. Another thing that sticks out is that there are names given to the different types of mental patients in the novel. The “Acutes” and “Chronics” differ in their mental state but are kept in the same ward. I am thinking about the Nurse Ratched's true intention in the novel. Where does she fit into the progression of the novel and will her McMurphy clash? The characters that are supposedly “mad” would be the “Chronics” because as the novel puts it they are “the culls of the Combine’s product” (Page 15). However, to me they are not really mad they just need some guidance. I think the person that is really “mad” is Nurse Ratched because she puts on a facade when certain people are present. Chief Bromden points out that“she has to change back...

Forest

...It was a spooky forest, dull, grey and filled with twisted trees, branches that reached out and the deeply cracked bark. The trees surrounding the edge of the forest with the branches clustered and tangled together which created an archway which dared people to enter its midst. These were far from a silent set of woods though. They had the smell of rotten corpses. There was always a thick fog that was visible in the forest. It felt like a monsters den, howling every night that was heard miles away. Paulina was a great person, she loved going on adventures and exploring places. She was young and was free. It was her ambition, so one day, she heard about the forest, due to her ambition she wanted to visit it. It was a cold and dark night, the frost hit her, the cold frost hitting against her with the wind. She walked through the fog towards the archway created by the trees, all that she could see was darkness. She entered... Carrying on for only about 15 minutes and then stopped. She shifted her view to her left and to the right to see if anything else apart from the darkness was visible. There was rarely any light coming from anywhere apart the gleaming moon on the puddles... But the puddles didn’t look like ordinary puddles. They gave out a dark red colour like blood. It made her insides turn, for assuming the worst. She panicked, all alone she had no one to turn to apart from herself of course. She stood out in the middle with her bright hair and skin. She slowly pulled out her...

Xylocopa Sp Around the World

...Name of the Assignment Xylocopa Sp around the world Introduction The genus Xylocopa (in the subfamily Xylocopinae) is commonly known as ‘Carpenter Bees’ and one of the large bees distributed worldwide. It consists near about 500 species in 31 subgenera. The word ‘carpenter’ comes from the fact that nearly all of its species use dead wood, bamboo, or structural timbers to build their nest. Associated members of the related tribe Ceratinini are often referred to as ‘small carpenter bees’. Taxonomy In 1802, the genus was described by French entomologist Pierre André Latreille. The name was derived from the ancient Greek word xylokopos which had a meaning of ‘wood-cutter’. Characteristics The females of several species live along with their own daughters or sisters and create a small social group. They employ wood bits to form partitions between chambers in the nest. But some species are not interested in making holes in wood dwellings. Although many species are known to rob nectar by slitting the sides of flowers with deep corollas, the species of Xylocopa can be important pollinators on open-faced flowers. In the United States, there are two eastern species: Xylocopa virginica and Xylocopa micans. On the other hand, Xylocopa varipuncta, Xylocopa tabaniformis orpifex and Xylocopa californica are the names of three other species that are primarily western by distribution. X. virginica is a widely distributed species. Some species are often mistaken for...

The Production of Halloween

... The change in market during the period went from a middle-aged high school educated audience in the mid 60s, to a younger, more affluent, college-educated demographic and by the mid 70s, a majority of all moviegoers were at least under 30. There was desperation in studios during this period due to status of the economy. The best thing that happened to the filmmakers was that they brought an emphasis on realism (Citation 1). The movie “Halloween” is known as one the greatest independent slasher films ever, created off of a budget of $300,000 and brought $70,000,000 in revenue. Halloween was directed by John Carpenter, produced by Debra Hill and written between the both of them. The movie was set in Haddonfield, Illinois, mainly on Halloween 1978. This movie was the break for “New Hollywood” actress Jamie Lee Curtis (Laurie Strode). John Carpenter was paid $10,000 for writing, directing and composing the music, plus he gained 10% of the rights from the film’s profits. With such a low budget, the actors and actresses had to provide their own wardrobe, and props had to be created with the materials that they had or could be bought inexpensively. For example, the mask worn by Michael Myers in the film was created from a Captain...

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Fog Essay

...The Fog in Kesey’s novel, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, symbolises PTSD and other trauma that has caused Chief Bromden to be put into the ward. The fog makes it so he can escape from the real world, but it also suffocates him and frightens him. As the fog dissipates, it symbolises how his emotions changed throughout the novel, making him a stronger person both physically and mentally. Throughout the novel Chief Bromden feels as though he is falling into a fog, that he is convinced is being pumped into the ward. Progressively getting lighter and lighter until it does not affect Bromden anymore, Kesey used the idea of the fog to represent the change bromden experiences in the entirety of the novel. With its many symbolic uses during the novel the fog can be seen as many different things both supporting and keeping bromden away from his goals. In the novel, Kesey points to the fact that Chief Bromden was a soldier in World War II, and during his time in battle, they used fog to hide the troops when they were under attack or surveillance by the enemy, this memory is instilled in Chief’s mind, causing him to fall back into the fog whenever he feels frightened or violated. The fog is not truly there, although, he has come to believe that it is and uses it to act as his security blanket, keeping him safe. The fog may be used at times as a way for Bromden to feel safe, however, the fog is not necessarily a good thing. Bromden speaks of how the fog was used in the war “whenever intelligence...

Halloween Film Critique

...John Carpenter’s Halloween: A Film Critique Michael Chapes Instructor David Hayes ENG 225 February 13, 2014 “It's Halloween, everyone's entitled to one good scare.” - Sheriff Leigh Brackett As long as there have been stories, there have been stories about the other, the unrealities we might categorize today as fantasy... Early myths in all cultures are populated by demons and darkness, early Egyptian mythology resounds with tales of a world beyond the physical, a realm of the spirits, to be revered and feared. Classical mythology is filled with monsters such as the Cerberus, the Minotaur, Medusa, the Hydra, the Sirens, Cyclops, Scylla and Charybdis, to name just a few. Every culture has a set of stories dealing with the unknown and unexplained, tales that chill, provoke and keep the listener wondering "what if..?" Horror films are the present-day version of the epic poems and ballads told round the fires of our ancestors. Horror movies of the 1970s reflect the grim mood of the decade. After the optimism of the 1960s, with its sexual and cultural revolutions, and the moon landings, the seventies was something of a disappointment. By 1970, the party was over; the Beatles split, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix died, while John Kennedy, his brother Robert, and Martin Luther King were all felled by an assassin’s bullet. These tragedies seemed to be just the first domino to fall, for then came Nixon...

...Identify a company (or school) that has been a target of a network or system intrusion? What information was targeted? Was the attack successful? If so, what changes has the company (or school) made to ensure that this vulnerability has been controlled?  As a response to the question, I would like to present a case of cyber espionage that happened in 2004 with the US Military and Defense. The series of attacks were designated as the Titan Rain by the FBI and known as one of the largest attacks in the history of Cyber espionage. Some claims that the attack was ongoing for three years while other believes they lasts for several days.(http://www.dvice.com/archives/2010/09/7_of_the_most_d.php) The main purpose of the attack was to steal confidential and sensitive information and patterns of the US army. Upon my research I have found out that there are many have assumptions about who can be the potential attacker and most of them claims that it could be either China (government supported cells) or Chinese mafia. In one particular article the author James A. Lewis contradicts the these assumptions and states that the attack was taken in action by the bored teenagers of California just for excitement as US officials performed further research. James points out that the intelligence services of China are not so lousy and clumsy would leave footprints after the operation. He also adds that China having one of the most sophisticated opponent and can launch an attack from other contraries...

The Cemetery

...The Cemetery Once upon a time, on a dark, quiet, and almost eerie night, there were two girls walking past the cemetery on the way to a friend’s Halloween party. When all the sudden the two girls heard screams of help. Startled by this they decide to go into the cemetery. The fog rolled over the tombstones, just barely visible by the full moon. Towards the middle of the cemetery a dark and ominous figure stood staring at us. It looked like a man but when we took a second look the figure was gone, and then out of nowhere came a warlock from behind a tree, and swooped down. His screams were ear piercing, and his eyes glowed like fire. We ran for our lives. As we ran through the cemetery in hopes of finding the exit, we notice all the graves had been dug up. We didn’t know what we were going to be up against. Our only hope was to find our way out. We walked further into the cemetery and came up upon a tomb. We were about to walk past it when a huge group of bats started coming at us. We decided to take shelter in the tomb. As we entered the tomb we could smell death. I looked down only to notice a trail of bloody footprints. When we looked around we couldn’t see anyone. Then there was a loud bang on the tomb door that made all of us jump. The door was closed; the only option was to walk through the tomb. We were so scared. After walking for what seemed to be an eternity, we notice a light at the end of the tunnel. We all had a moment of hope. We rushed to the end to find...

...A hairy ingrown toenail with growing fungus, this sounds absolutely disgusting right? I doubt anyone wants to watch or see anything to do with an ingrown toenail with fungus because it is gross, disgusting and scary to look at. So why do people enjoy horror movies so much? It is the same kind of concept, something scares and disgusts us, but when it comes to horror films, shows, and etc. we find it to be pleasurable at the same time. Noël Carroll believes that the thing that attracts us to unpleasant feelings, like being scared and disgusted, is due to the monster. The monster is why there is a paradox of horror. Humans are extremely curious beings of life. Doctor Who season 4 episode 11, “Midnight”, demonstrates Carroll’s philosophy behind why people enjoy horror. “Midnight” starts off with the Doctor trying to convince his partner in crime to join him on a visit to a waterfall made of sapphires, which is located on the planet called Midnight, but she refuses, and the Doctor gets on the Crusader Tour Bus with seven strangers. On his way to Midnight Palace, the bus stops due to “engine” problems; however the Doctor quickly figures out that the Crusader Tour Bus is in perfect condition. The mechanic seems to see an odd shadow that appears to be running toward them, but the driver says its nothing and that help is on the way, reassuring the passengers and the bus attendant that everything will be fine. Suddenly, a random but constant knocking begins. The plot has finally come...

Personal Narrative: What's Good Home

...What’s good home-skillet... (For the sake of everyone that reads this, I’m not gonna finish that greeting.) Funny enough, that used to be a phrase I thought was cool. So, today is gonna be kinda a reflective piece on how shitty my week has been and why. When I looked back into this week, it went incredibly quick, it was Friday before I knew it. When I took a second glance at why my week was so bad, I realize, the only reason it was shitty was because of me. That took a lot to admit. So without further ado, my week. Monday I had to take a “mini” exam in biology. I wasn’t particularly scared for this but I did know that I wasn’t really prepared either. I didn’t read the book, which isn’t a big deal with the way this class is set up, but I realized I hadn’t built my foundations for the chapters. During the exam, I couldn’t tell the difference between terms. Now, I’m behind and have to play catch up. Tuesday I was supposed to read 200 pages of a book by 10 am Tuesday morning, but instead, I spent my previous weekend out of town and sleeping the day away. Monday night, I couldn’t really focus because of internal and external noises. Tuesday, I also drove to Statesboro after I got off of work to meet my grandma and sister to have dinner. I spent most of my night trying to figure out how to get past the activation lock on my grandma’s iPad that she gave to me. Yet, I still had Chemistry to do. Chemistry has been somewhat the bain of my existence. Every Tuesday and Thursday I come...

The Name of Two People

...Definition of Postcolonialism Postcolonialism is the study of the legacy of the era of European, and sometimes American, direct global domination, which ended roughly in the mid-20th century, and the residual political, socio-economic, and psychological effects of that colonial history. Postcolonialism examines the manner in which emerging societies grapple with the challenges of self-determination and how they incorporate or reject the Western norms and conventions, such as legal or political systems, left in place after direct administration by colonial powers ended. Ironically, much early postcolonial theory, with its emphasis on overt rejection of imposed Western norms, was tied to Marxist theory, which also originated in Europe. Contemporary studies focus more on the effects of postcolonial globalization and the development of indigenous solutions to local needs. INTRODUCTION (Enote) By definition, postcolonialism is a period of time after colonialism, and postcolonial literature is typically characterized by its opposition to the colonial. However, some critics have argued that any literature that expresses an opposition to colonialism, even if it is produced during a colonial period, may be defined as postcolonial, primarily due to its oppositional nature. Postcolonial literature often focuses on race relations and the effects of racism and usually indicts white and/or colonial societies. Despite a basic consensus on the general themes of postcolonial writing, however...

Fraud Paper

...------------------------------------------------- Edwin w. edwards Louisiana Political Fraud August 25, 2013 Professor Cynthia waddell By: Christina Black August 25, 2013 Professor Cynthia waddell By: Christina Black Politics in Louisiana has and still remains to be today a controversial and interesting issue. Since statehood in 1812, Louisiana has been traditionally conservative and today remains to be marginally democratic. It has long been known for its toleration of corruption in government. In his manuscript, “Peapatch Politics: The Earl long Era in Louisiana Politics”, former Lieutenant Governor Bill Dodd describes corruption as "a way of life, inherited, and made quasi-respectable and legal by the French freebooters who founded, operated, and left us as the governmental blueprint that is still Louisiana's constitutional and civil law." Among the 50 United States, Louisiana ranks as number 15 with an overall grade of a C minus on the Corruption Risk Report Card. (Louisiana - Legislative Accountability, 2013) Serving as Louisiana’s fiftieth governor for four terms in 1972 to 1980 and 1984 to 1988, Edwin Washington Edwards, who is remembered by many as a colorful, powerful, and legendary figure in Louisiana politics, ended his sixteen years in office short of colorful and powerful. The former Governor of Louisiana, Edwards was subject to a near two dozen state and federal investigations beginning in 1960 when he held a Congress position. Edward’s fraud behaviors...
