Odessa is a town where football rains supremacy to everything else. Not school, not politics or any other major topic in the town or country can dethrone football as it is what the town and people live for. Odessa is not a town where one goes to find a successful life, it's a place one goes to have Permian football engraved in their mind. Through "Friday Night Lights" by H.G. Bissinger, we get to see the impact football has on Odessa and its citizens through the eyes of the 1988 Permian High football team and what they went through. The Permian Panthers of 1988 was a team that the author H.G. Bissinger spent a year studying to truly understand the importance that Permian football had on this town. He packed up his bags and moved to Odessa with his family. This is a big sacrifice he made in order to look at an enigma of high school football in Texas. By Bissinger doing this, he is able to give the whole country just a glimpse of what exactly Permian football is and what it stands for through his book. All of the characters stood for different virtues and had different traits, but one thing they all shared was there love for Permian football. Going from the players on the team, to the coaches, …show more content…
To be smart and try in school was almost a disgrace. Julie Gardner says, "you couldn't be too smart it was the end to your social life If you were an intelligent girl" (138). This quote gives a great example of how education wasn't important at all to the school of Permian. Permian High possessed a teacher, LaRue Moore, that every high school would kill to have. Moore, who had a larger impact on students, received almost 35% less in salary compared to Coach Gary Gaines. Permian wasted a great opportunity to bolster their English department by giving money to allow the football team to fly in chartered jets. No one cared about the dilemma though, as 20,000 people didn't gather around every Friday night to learn

Joey's Bar

...complaints from the other loyal customers. According to them the Joey’s Bar is losing its exclusivity and business-like ambiance. The bar is also experiencing a lot of property damages which was the result of Saturday night events. This resulted to a significant drop of sales from the other days of the week. III. The Objective Formulate a feasible solution to address the problem stated and implement it as soon as possible in order for the problem not to worsen. The action should always be for the betterment of the company and provide a more profitable operation not just for the moment but also in the coming future. IV. Areas of Consideration 1. Before the Saturday Rock Live Project, managing Joey’s Bar was easy for Mr. Cortes. Two weeknights were considered “income generators”: the Tuesday Acoustic Night and the City Businessmen Friendship Circle Nights every Fridays. 2. During Acoustic Nights, Mr. Cortes would hire local acoustic performers and pay them P1,000.00 per night. The subtle crowd (mostly ladies) would feast with light food, light beer and ladies’ drinks. It was a perfect place for couples, officemates and afterschool ladies’ hang-out. 3. Friday was Mr. Cortes’ important night of the week: The City Businessmen Friendship Circle Night, a group of local businessmen at their 50’s who are quite influential in the local business scene, considered Joey’s Bar their favorite hang-out. They like the exclusive and fresh ambiance. 4. There was even a time...

Death of Marilyn Monroe

...On the night of August 4, 1962, Marilyn Monroe died of an overdose of Nembutal, a Barbiturate. She was found lying naked in her bed, face down, clutching the phone tightly in her hand. There were several empty bottles of sleeping pills on the table next to her bed. Her housekeeper, Eunice Murray, had been there all night. Around 3:30 a.m., August 5th, she became alarmed that Marilyn's light was still on and that the door was locked. She called Marilyn's psychiatrist, Dr. Ralph Greenson, and he immediately rushed over. When he arrived they looked in Marilyn's window and saw her lying on the bed. They then proceeded to break into her room, and when they found out she was dead they called the police. The coroner pronounced it probable suicide. This is the official version of what happened. But one must also take into consideration the cover-up, the conflicting stories of what happened, and the inefficiency with which the investigation was carried out. Marilyn Monroe did not die by her own hand, it was someone else's. Who killed her? Was it the Kennedy’s or the Mafia? What reasons did anyone have for killing Marilyn Monroe? Did she know too much? Was she a security risk? Was her death used to blackmail the Kennedys? Whoever the person, whatever the motive, Marilyn was dead, and it was due to foul play. The man who performed the autopsy on Marilyn was Dr. Noguchi. His report stated that her blood contained 8 milligrams percent chloral hydrate, and her liver contained 13 milligrams...

Earlier Wednesday, a woman in Haiti was swept away by a rushing river she was trying to cross, in some southern towns of Jamaica, a few crocodiles were caught in rushing flood waters carried them out of their homes in mangrove thickets, showing up districts where electricity was knocked out, local residents reported. One big croc took up temporary residence in a family's front yard in the city of Portmore. Wednesday evening the hurricane's eye had crossed Jamaica and emerged off its northern coast near the town of Port Antonio, meteorologists said, but rain and winds continued to pound the Caribbean island, and hurricane conditions were predicted to last well in the night. It was the first direct hit by the eye of a hurricane in Jamaica since Hurricane Gilbert 24 years ago, and fearful authorities closed the island's international airports and police ordered 48-hour curfews in major towns to keep people off the streets and deter looting. Cruise ships change their itineraries to avoid the storm, which made landfall five miles (8 kilometers) east of the capital, Kingston. Flash floods and mudslides were a threat for this debt-shackled tropical island of roughly 2.7 million inhabitants, which has a crumbling infrastructure and a number of sprawling shantytowns built on steep...

...8-12-2011 Output: Hardcopy Softcopy Responsibility: Group E-mail of sender: aj.ziat@gmail.com Submission: Softcopy e-mail attachment; and hardcopy Destination e-mail: mgt3020@gmail.com Introduction An executive tends to interact with people from different religions and races. He/she is bound to encounter conflict with colleagues, subordinates, and superiors due to different values, and perhaps, varying meaning for the same values. One of the ways to prepare oneself for possible encounters is to be aware of some of the values held by people from other religions. * Islam: The religion revealed to Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) through the Quran, Holy Book of Islam. Muslims are obliged to pray Allah (SWT) five times a day according to a very rigorous schedule, at dawn, around noon, in the afternoon, at dusk and at night. These prayers can only be merged in specific cases, such as visiting a foreign country or during a journey exceeding 80 kilometers. Talking about the workplace, an issue could arise regarding the fact that Muslims have to pray and according to what we stated above, there are two compulsory prayers during the work time – at noon and during the afternoon. Malaysia or other countries try hardly to give either some right to majority and minorities or not at all. We have been hearing, mostly in the West, that Islam creates problems in the workplace since they want to pray but we truly believe that it goes back to the company policy to allow or not their employees...

Family Tradition and Theories

...Our family tradition is taking breakfast together every Friday. Every member of the family ought to be present at the breakfast table no matter the time he or she slept last night. Even if one member of the family is mad at the other, he or she must be present at the table at 10 a.m. and none is supposed to leave the table until all the family members are through with their breakfast and said our prayers. This is because most of my family members are preoccupied and so they are always busy and do not find time to sit together with the rest of us who are not busy and have meals together. This makes connecting as a family very difficult and that is why the Friday meeting is compulsory for all of us. When we take breakfast together as a family, we share more than just food. Taking breakfast together is a way of building protective assets that strengthen our health and development. When we take breakfast together, we catch up with one another and spend time together even if it is for two hours only. We chat, ask one another how they spent their night, week, how they are faring in their jobs and about their plans for the day. Therefore, when we take Friday breakfast together, we bond with one another. Chatting over regular breakfasts at home, we learn how to get along with one another and get a chance to speak up more around with the family members who are closest to us. The family tradition of taking breakfast on Fridays together is the logical thing to do as a family. Other...

Personal Narrative

...Got it. Yes cool. And one more thing, wake up at 6 on week ends for chores.” and she walked out of the room leaving me there in an aw at who my aunt really was and what I would have to endure for the next few years. I started to unpack my belongings. I looked at my watch and noticed it was near 6:30 so I walked down the narrow dark staircase with one lightbulb that was broken to light my way. My aunt was making pork chop and she was in the kitchen engulfed in smoke. The lights above illuminated the smoke giving the room a weird lighting. At the table she gave me one pork chop and it was half burned and the milk tasted weird but I ate it anyway. I asked her what her name was and she replied with “you should keep your mouth shut at the dinner table, it’s disrespectful to talk to me at the table” she said blowing a tower of smoke above her and setting the cigar butt in a jar full of used cigars. She lit another one. I slowly drank my awful milk and went back upstairs. My aunt had no air conditioning so it was hot in my small room. The schools here went till the end of june and start in october. I did not like the schedule because every other school does it...

...THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL : THE DEFINITIVE EDITION Anne Frank Edited by Otto H. Frank and Mirjam Pressler Translated by Susan Massotty -- : -BOOK FLAP Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl is among the most enduring documents of the twentieth century. Since its publication in 1947, it has been read by tens of millions of people all over the world. It remains a beloved and deeply admired testament to the indestructable nature of the human spirit. Restore in this Definitive Edition are diary entries that had been omitted from the original edition. These passages, which constitute 30 percent more material, reinforce the fact that Anne was first and foremost a teenage girl, not a remote and flawless symbol. She fretted about, and tried to copie with, her own emerging sexuality. Like many young girls, she often found herself in disagreement with her mother. And like any teenager, she veered between the carefree nature of a child and the full-fledged sorrow of an adult. Anne emerges more human, more vulnerable, and more vital than ever. Anne Frank and her family, fleeing the horrors of Nazi occupation, hid in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse for two years. She was thirteen when the family went into the Secret Annex, and in these pages she grows to be a young woman and a wise observer of human nature as well. With unusual insight, she reveals the relations between eight people living under extraordinary conditions, facing hunger, the ever-present threat of discovery and death, complete...

Literature

... When I knocked at the door, an old woman, his only servant, opened it, and informed me that her master was then officiating at the cathedral, and that he had directed her to prepare dinner for me in his absence. An unpleasant smell of salt fish made me ask her what the dinner consisted of. She assured me that she had cooked all that could be permitted in his Holiness's house on Friday. On my asking her further why on Friday, she replied that Friday was a fast day. I bade her tell His Holiness that I had hoped to have the pleasure of calling on him shortly, and drove to the hotel in Sackville-street, where I engaged apartments and dined. After dinner I resumed my eternal search--I know not for what: it drives me to and fro like another Cain. I sought in the streets without success. I went to the theatre. The music was execrable, the scenery poor. I had seen the play a month before in London with the same beautiful artist in the chief part. Two years had passed since, seeing her for the first time, I had hoped that she, perhaps, might be the long-sought mystery. It had proved otherwise. On this night I looked at her and listened to her for the sake of that bygone hope, and applauded her generously when the curtain fell. But I went out lonely still. When I had supped at a restaurant, I returned to my hotel, and tried to read. In vain. The sound of feet in...

Accepting Cultural Differences in Muslims

...themselves against their enemies. To be a Muslim is not just an individual activity it is a community identity and responsibility. Islam is considered a total way of life for the religious community. For many in America who are raised with the idea of the separation of church and state and the sense that religion is a private affair, Islam can seem confusing, especially since Islam does not have a “church” to preserve and promote its beliefs. There is a great diversity among Muslims as there is among other religious communities in America. Because America is predominantly Judeo-Christian it is sometimes easier for Christians and Jews to practice their faith. American schools do not recognize Muslim holidays. Even such a simple task as attending Friday congregational prayer and taking a break to perform the salat during working hours are often difficult. Muslim culture has become prominent in coutries other than Islam. Countries that have a large Muslim following include Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, United Kingdom and United States. Accepting Cultural Differences in Muslims Since the tragedy of 9-11 a portion of American citizens are under the beliefs that all Muslims are terrorists. There are extremists in every religion but it appears that it is the Muslim faith that is categorized as the terrorist religion. Muslim stereotypes are perpetuated in every form of the media accompanied by gross misinformation...
