...Music censorship began its journey in the early 1950’s with the “controversial” music of Blacks during the time period. It has then evolved from a form of racism to a method of suppression. It touches all major genres, but is most commonly issues with both rap and rock music. Major groups such as the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) have been formed to try and monitor the lyrical messages that are expressed in songs. The RIAA is not out to completely censor music, but to advise buyers of the messages they may be listening to on a certain album. Then there is the party that feels censorship at any level shall not be present. It is suppressing one’s First Amendment rights in freedom of expression and also suppresses an artist abilities to fully paint a vivid picture with their lyrics to the audience. The last group believes that censorship is a must, and that any songs that carry the censored material shall be taken off of the shelves. That specific group believes that contaminating society with explicit lyrics should not reward artists. ...The Graduate The Graduate is 1967 film that was based on a 1963 novel, The Graduate. I have viewed both the screenplay and the trailer of this film. The trailer took important scenes and presented them in such ways that could actually change the plot of the movie in some ways. The trailer combined so many key shots of the film that gives you just enough to engage you emotionally and spark your curiosity. As the trailer begins you immediately hear an asynchronous sound (Sikov, 79) of background music. The song playing is The song of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel (wikipedia.com). The trailer opens up with a long shot of a young man sitting outside in front of a fountain and there’s a flag waving right above him. The camera then cuts to an extreme long high shot to capture the entire landscape of the university and students walking around the campus behind the young man. ...Overall, Residual Dreams is a well produced and well acted short film, with several strong aspects that make it stand out in the world of student films. These aspects primarily include locations and acting. However, some aspects, primarily choreography and, at times, acting, revealed it to be a less than professional endeavor . By far this film’s strongest aspect was its locations. The gallery space at the beginning is beautiful. It is light and airy, a perfect contrast to the break up that occurs within it. The bar location was also wonderfully selected. It was spacious and visually interesting for a scene with fairly simple camera work. My favorite location was definitely the abandoned lot or construction space (I could not quite tell which it is). It is visually striking and the perfect location for a fight scene. I also enjoyed the golf course location, especially the use of ambient sound. It made the space feel alive, which is something that student films struggle to do well. The combination of sound design and locations, really helped in the world-building of this film. It established the middle-class mid-sized city, quickly and efficiently and they did so without showing an discernable Ann Arbor landmarks, which student films so often do. The acting in this film also had its strong points. I really enjoyed Melissa’s response to Jake’s criticism in the first scene. He was a spacey jerk and she acted genuinely hurt. The magic of film however is that these actions can be visibly seen and can do this not only with the script but with camera angles, music, sounds, lighting and many other factors that would have to be imagined in a novel. One film that clearly uses this to its advantage is Mike Nichols “The Graduate” which is centered on Benjamin, a young man who finds himself in a love-based dilemma with a woman and her daughter. The film nearly abuses these techniques to create a masterpiece with both a meaningful and enthralling story. One scene that stands out from the rest in the movie is in a montage where Benjamin finds himself drifting in water and making the beast with two backs with the older woman. However, this montage comes to an abrupt stop when Benjamin hears his father’s voice calling to him in a rather upset tone. There is then a cut to a close up on the fathers face, blocking out the sun and giving him a darker more authoritative appearance. This creates the illusion that Benjamin’s father represents the strictness of reality compared to Benjamin’s drifting. And as the upset father talks to Benjamin about the life that he is wasting it becomes apparent that Benjamin’s laid back appearance lacks control when compared to that his father.
