...“The Final Report of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel” National policy must ensure the healthy development of a domestic technical workforce with adequate scale and top-level skill. But the concerns of national policy relating to mathematics education go well beyond those in our society who will become scientists or engineers. The national workforce of future years will surely have to handle quantitative concepts more fully and more deftly than at present. So will the citizens and policy leaders who deal with the public interest in positions of civic leadership. Sound education in mathematics across the population is a national interest. Mathematics literacy is a serious problem in the United States. According to Philips (2007), 78% of adults cannot explain how to compute the interest paid on a loan, 71% cannot calculate miles per gallon on a trip, and 58% cannot calculate a 10% tip for a lunch bill. Further, it is clear from the research that a broad range of students and adults also have difficulties with fractions (e.g., Hecht, Vagi, & Torgeson, 2007; Mazzocco & Devlin, in press), a foundational skill essential to success in algebra. The recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP, “the Nation’s Report Card”)shows that 27% of eighth-graders could not correctly shade 1/3 of a rectangle and 45% could not solve a word problem that required dividing fractions (U.S. Department of Education, 2004). Bsn vs Adn

...THE BSN NURSE IS PREPARED FOR A BROAD ROLE Unlike graduates of diploma or associate-degree nursing programs, the nurse with a baccalaureate degree is prepared to practice in all health care settings - critical care, outpatient care, public health, and mental health. Accordingly, the BSN nurse is well-qualified to deliver care in private homes, outpatient centers, and neighborhood clinics where demand is fast expanding as hospitals focus increasingly on acute care and as health care moves beyond the hospital to more primary and preventive services throughout the community. In addition to the liberal learning and global perspective gained from a four-year baccalaureate education, the BSN curriculum includes clinical, scientific, decisionmaking, and humanistic skills, including preparation in community health, patient education, and nursing management and leadership. Such skills are essential for today's professional nurse who must make quick, sometimes life-and-death decisions; design and manage a comprehensive plan of nursing care; understand a patient's treatment, symptoms, and danger signs; supervise other nursing personnel and support staff; master advanced technology; guide patients through the maze of health care resources in a community; and educate patients on health care options and how to adopt healthy lifestyles....

Nursing Educators

...The consensus states that many nurses with advanced graduate nursing preparation practice in roles and specialties that are essential to advance the health of the public but do not focus on direct care to individual (APRN Consensus Work Group & the National Council of State Boards of Nursing APRN Advisory Committee, 2008). If the consensus recognizes that nurses in these roles as essential to advance the health of individuals how can they not be qualified to practice as an advanced practice nurse? In today’s ever changing healthcare we need all roles that practice at a Master’s or Doctorate’s level to be considered an advanced practice nurse. Every role has a unique part in helping to advance nursing and healthcare in general. Our nursing educators are the ones that help educate other nurses to fulfill the four roles, CNP, CNS, CNM, and CRNA, which are classified by the consensus as an advanced practice nurse. They have the knowledge base to instruct other nurses on the evolving material that makes healthcare so unique. Without our educators none of the other nurse would even be able to practice as an advanced practice nurse. Our nursing informatics are the ones that help to put together the programs we use as nurses and as an advanced practice nurse to record patient data. We wouldn’t even be able to chart without their help. Every day new programs are created and implemented in our hospitals, doctor’s offices, and home health care....
