...I learned a lot from watching the four videos provided this week, some of the videos had more important parts and least important parts included. The first video was Freedman or Freedmen. This video discussed many topics such as how many slaves after They were freed, changed their last names. They did this for many reasons such as they did not have a name, they had their owners names or they wanted to move on from their past as slaves and Morgan Freemen wondered if his had been changed. The people in the video were well known names and asked for their thoughts and opinions on what it may have been like for these people to find out they were free and the thoughts that they have had. A monument was put up for black fallen soldiers and actor Chris Rock along with others found their ancestors fought in the Civil war and some seen the documents and their families names on it. The most important part of this video in my opinion was that they created a monument for the blacks that fought and died for our country and that they were recognized for doing this brave act. The least important part being the opinions on their ancestors feelings toward freedom and what they may have felt, only those who were slaves would know the answers, we can only speculate. The second video was called American history: The Native American Massacre. This Occurred in November of 1864, in Sand creek. The tribe’s chief was named Black kettle, They...

...100 years after the war. Furthermore, Northern-born white men who moved south after the Confederacy defeat were called carpetbaggers by Southerners, and Southern-born white Republicans were given the name scalawag; Blacks held fewer governmental positions and was smaller than their proportion in the population; Indians suffered from the white Americans’ racism, paternalism, and belief that the U.S. had a “manifest destiny” to control all the land between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans (Schultz 2012). However, out of all of the ethnic groups mentioned, former slaves were the only group still considered intellectually inferior to whites and not able to run a government. In 1863, President Lincoln was more interested in putting together his Ten-Percent Plan that offered amnesty to any southerner who proclaimed loyalty to the union and support emancipation of the slaves (Schultz, 2012). This was an attempt to bridge the gap between the north and the...

What Would I Do If I Would Have to Die in a Year?

...If I Would Have to Die in a Year? Mortality is something that binds us all. We may have different personalities, different colors, different accents, but we all are human. Sometimes death sneaks up on someone and takes him by surprise. Sometimes it lingers until the person he's visiting knows the friendship will go on a deeper level soon. First I would take a lovely first class cruise around the world for one entire year, or, maybe just use the ships as a constant base from which to explore other worlds, until the fateful day. I would try and travel to every place on Earth, and have as many deep and spiritual conversations as possible, meet the great spiritual and influential philosophical thinkers in the world today, starting with His Holiness the Dali Lama. Then, when the time of passing to the next existence comes, have those that love me, who know me, all around me, for a peaceful, calming, soul releasing experience, and to let them know, it is not a moment of emotional disaster, but one of triumph and transition, for the human spirit. However, life is beautiful and amazing, and probably for us its too early to think about death, because we have so much unfinished work to do and make our families happier,Mortality is something that binds us all. We may have different personalities, different colors, different accents, but we all are human. Sometimes death sneaks up on someone and takes him by surprise. ...The Predynastic Period in Egypt was broken up into 6 different cultures. The Bardarian people of the Bardarian culture lived in Upper Egypt and they were semi-nomadic people. They buried their dead on the outskirts of their small settlements and also conducted ceremonial burials. The deceased were sometimes buried with finely crafted jewelry, cloth, fur and the usually included a crafted figurine of a female fertility idol. Female Figure is a Predynastic Egyptian sculpture from 3600-3200 B.C. made of ivory. The color of this sculpture is gray and it is held up by a platform and wire. It looks as if the figure is standing on its own. The figure has very few lines and looks very smooth. Although this sculpture is a female, she is not wearing clothes. You can tell that she is not wearing clothes because you can see what appears to be a belly button in the abdominal region and very small abnormal breasts, the body also has small curves. The figure was also sculpted with no arms, legs, ears or a mouth. The eyes are very big and close together. The limited use of color and the use of ivory to sculpt this figure shows the lack of resources during this time. Survival of the fittest was what the people in during this period focused on and also reproduction, hence the female figure of fertility. The figure being only sculpted of the just the body was probably important during this time. They didn’t care about women being beautiful but about their bodies and the wellbeing of them because...

A Summary of "To His Coy Mistress" by Andrew Marvell

..."To His Coy Mistress" is divided into three stanzas or poetic paragraphs. It’s spoken by a nameless man, who doesn’t reveal any physical or biographical details about himself, to a nameless woman, who is also biography-less. During the first stanza, the speaker tells the mistress that if they had more time and space, her "coyness" (see our discussion on the word "coy" in "What’s Up With the Title?") wouldn’t be a "crime." He extends this discussion by describing how much he would compliment her and admire her, if only there was time. He would focus on "each part" of her body until he got to the heart (and "heart," here, is both a metaphor for sex, and a metaphor for love). In the second stanza he says, "BUT," we don’t have the time, we are about to die! He tells her that life is short, but death is forever. In a shocking moment, he warns her that, when she’s in the coffin, worms will try to take her "virginity" if she doesn’t have sex with him before they die. If she refuses to have sex with him, there will be repercussions for him, too. All his sexual desire will burn up, "ashes" for all time. In the third stanza he says, "NOW," I’ve told you what will happen when you die, so let’s have sex while we’re still young. Hey, look at those "birds of prey" mating. That’s how we should do it – but, before that, let’s have us a little wine and time (cheese is for sissies). Then, he wants to play a game – the turn ourselves into a "ball" game. (Hmmm.) He suggests, furthermore...

Sea Story - Essay

...top 50 list of the greatest British writers since 1945. She is now 79 years old and lives in Sheffield, England. In the short story, “Sea Story”, the main character is called Harold. Harold is a poet who studies eels in the Caribbean. The story is roughly about him trying to win the love of his life, Laura. Harold has always lived close to the seas and was also born near it. His parents loved the seas and everything about it, so that is why Harold loves the sea so much. His grandfather also loved the sea, so that is where Harold’s father got his love for the sea from. Harold’s mother “wrote fierce little poems about waves and weather” (P. 1, L. 7-8). Laura, who is another character in the story, chose life on the sea. Harold chose life on land studying English, because of his mother’s interest in English literature. Both of them carries the sea in their heart, but in two different ways. That is the difference between them Laura and Harold. Harold has a big love for Laura. He sends letters and e-mails to her trying to get in touch with her, but with no luck. After trying these ways, he tries to get in touch with her by throwing a bottle in the ocean, containing one of his letters. This almost succeed as she receives it, but not as a whole letter. The sea fights Harold, and keeps him distant from Laura. First off, a mollymawk “tore at it” (P.3 L. 114), which result in the death of its chicks. Then the cap detaches, and gets swallowed by a turtle. The turtle died...

...In "To His Coy Mistress," Andrew Marvell presents a speaker who has a deep conviction appeal to his love. The speaker uses an appeal as his main tool, but he also appeals to his mistress through emotion to gain a response. In the first part of the poem the speaker appeals to his character, second part emotion, and last reason. By using the methods of appeals the speaker hopes to win her love. . In the first stanza, the speaker professes his love for his mistress by saying he would love you ten before the flood (7-10). The speaker's "love should grow vaster than empires"(11-12) and he would adore her for thousands of years (13-18). “What it’s like to be a Black Girl (for those of you who aren’t)” by Patricia Smith, The speaker uses sharp sentence structure and strong forceful language that showed the reader the seriousness of her topic. . Smith’s poem gives the readers a view into a young black girl’s transition into black woman-hood at a time where both being a black girl and a black woman was not as welcomed. In the beginning “It’s being 9 years old and feeling like you’re not finished,” writes Smith, “like your edges are wild, like there’s something, everything, wrong.” (4-5). She refers in her poem is feeling the awkwardness of her changing body and the hope of something different. “It’s dropping food coloring in your eyes to make them blue and suffering their burn in silence. It’s popping a bleached white mop head over the kinks of your hair and primping in front of the...
