Multitasking plays an important role to teenagers lives. Some listen to music while playing video games. Others type a research report and answer their text messages, at the same time. Parents don’t think this is good for them. Multitasking is becoming widely common in teens. It allows them to have the world at their fingertips, and allowing them to stay connected with multiple media sources all at once. Although many adults and parents believe multitasking has negative effects on teens, studies might say otherwise.
Multitasking has become widely common in teens recently. They can benefit a lot from it. Studies have shown that teens who multitask a lot tend to have good skills in their other 5 senses, such as sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. These senses are beneficial and crucial to a teen’s life, they are what makes …show more content…
Especially with school work. In a recent study at the Ohio State University, researchers found that students who cram in studying at last minute for an exam, while listening to music, and texted their friends is common among teens, and being successful. Students felt satisfied because they were effective at studying and accomplish their homework. But in the world we live in today, teens have easy access to technology, allowing multitasking to be much easier to do. The facts are at their fingertips, if they get stuck on a math problem it's only a click away. In an article by Lori Aratani, she interviewed senior Christine Stoddard, from Yorktown High School about the benefits of teens multitasking on school work. Christine Stottard added “"I honestly feel like I'm able to accomplish more during an hour if I multitask. But if it's something like English or History that comes easily to me, then I can easily divide my attention. It's the way I've always been." (11) She even admits to filling out a college scholarship application while being interviewed for this

Multitasking On Teens

...Anyone who has spent extensive time around teens and tweens knows many of them spend a good portion of their day on their phones or otherwise consuming media. What might be surprising is just how much of a teen’s or tween’s day is dedicated to media. According to a recent study conducted by Common Sense Media, teens spend about 9 hours per day using media for their own enjoyment. This does not include the use of media at school or for schoolwork. The slightly younger tweens spend about 6 hours daily using media for fun. While these numbers might be a little surprising, what could be even more surprising is just how teens and tweens are taking in all this media. For many teens, multitasking is the key. While working on homework, 60 percent admit they are also texting. Seventy-five percent say they listen to music while doing homework. Others admit to being on social media or watching television while working on homework. Many teens feel multitasking does not affect their schoolwork even though studies have shown that multitasking can have a negative impact on cognitive control and the ability to process information....

Social Networking Sites Reduces the Net Worth of Children and Teens

...Social networking sites reduces the net worth of children and teens The 21st century undoubtedly has become the era of technology; creating a global village of tremendous communication, research and inventions. Today, the global north is easily linked to the global south opening up a range of opportunities in the transport industry, economic interaction, media and publicity, cooperate governance and even socialization through social media. The concept of social media has revolutionized the way children and teenagers communicate and stay in touch with friends, relatives and close families, learning, information sharing, making virtual friends and creating a diverse world of people from different cultures around the globe and would never have met in a lifetime. The proliferation of social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter has enabled children and youth to express themselves and make new beneficial connections quickly. It seem appropriate therefore to mention in few lines about how I personally feel about social media and what it has done for me. I definitely love being in my own space most of the time, within my own space, and alone, in this sense social media has provided the opportunity for me to interact without being in physical proximity with the person/persons. I appreciate this type of interaction as it saves me the awkwardness and strain I feel when meeting new people face to face. Moreover I can now shop online without leaving the confines...

Social Network

...an integral part of our lives. An important development is that users no longer just take part of the information - they are in it and creating it by typing, uploading photos and videos and make their own status updates. An image that is often portrayed in terms of social networking on the Internet is that it prevents people from meeting in the real world. And no matter how we define what is socially - to socialize with ten friends online and share experiences in the cloud, or coffee with a friend - the image of the physically isolated internet man is a myth. A study by marketingcharts.com shows what I just said. The survey is from 2010 where you can see that we clearly create larger network. Jeffrey Cole from the Center for Digital Future in California who researches how the Internet affects people's lives over time claims also that, “Socializing with the family does not decrease. Socializing with friends increases even a little when people start using the Internet. Many people use the technology to arrange real meetings”. Education Database Online blog has published an interesting article that shows how Facebook and Twitter have both positive and negative effects on one's studies. Positive effects include that students who use Facebook have a more...

Teenage Brain Research Paper

...Tyler Vento 4/18/17 Ms. Strickland English 122 Teen Brains To start with a teenagers brain is simply just not a developed as that of an adult. A teen brain is more likely to become easily addicted to harmful substances. In addition, to this the teenage brain finds it harder to process information which could have a negative effect on their social abilities. Since the teen brain starts to mature from the back of the brain to the front it is easier for teens to be more rash, an example would be texting and driving, which sadly can sometimes leads to death. In the last two decades research into teen brains have shown us that the frontal lobe is undeveloped which will cause us to act in ways that others might find unacceptable. However most people...

Students Distracted By Social Media

...People are often distracted by media and electronic devices, causing them to be disconnected from the world around them. People feel the need to be connected so badly they forget to be connected in real life too (Barnes). It gets harder to have a true human connection when everyone is on their phones, and choosing not to connect with the world and people around them. It makes people feel lonely and anxious, especially when they see they were not invited to something their friends where. People forget how to be social in person when they get so used to only being social on the internet (Barr). They don't think about what they post and forget when they apply for a job, the jobs will find what they have posted and it could affect the chances of them getting the job. Pictures stay on the internet forever. People post pictures that can get them fired or not hired, all the time...

Google Makes Stupid

...it because I was too busy multitasking… First off, this is written as a business novel. Lately, I have been really weary about business novels. For one, I’m not a novel reader and, since The Goal, the only business novels I’ve liked and gotten through are SHORT ones, including All I Need to Know About Manufacturing I Learned in Joe’s Garage: World Class Manufacturing Made Simple and The Ice Cream Maker: An Inspiring Tale About Making Quality The Key Ingredient in Everything You Do (my review here). This book, written by business coach Dave Crenshaw, tackles the idea of “multitasking” — that we can do two things at once. If you think about multitasking from a Lean perspective, you might think about the practices of Standardized Work. In a factory, standardized work assumes a person can really only do one thing at a time. At most, you might reach for a part with your left hand while simultaneously reaching for a tool with your right. But, this is a relatively simple task that, in a repetitive manufacturing environment, can be done without thinking and through a lot of muscle memory. In professional settings, we often trick ourselves into thinking we can multitask. While on conference calls, people play Minesweeper or surf the web. This works, except for when you realize you haven’t been listening or someone calls on you and you can’t answer — it’s embarrassing. Nurses and other medical professionals are often the queens (and kings) of multitasking, or so they think. Can we really...

Is Texting Making Us Dumb?

...Ashley Fuell Marissa Campbell English 121 May 6, 2014 Is Texting Making Us Dumb? Almost everyone I know over the age of twelve years old owns a cellphone and uses it to communicate through text message. Add to that the large amount of people who use email and social media, and it’s clear that we depend a lot on technology to communicate with each other. In order to make these methods more efficient and immediate, a form of tech speak has developed and due to frequent, constant use, has begun to creep into the school classrooms. Tech speak is a form of slang that shortens words to make text messaging faster. It also includes emoticons, a way of using punctuation marks to make a picture of a face or whatever the user wants to form. Technology is making us bad spellers with the use of spell checkers and autocorrect. This texting lingo is also damaging our youth’s written language skills because students are finding it increasingly difficult to switch between using tech speak and proper grammar. Further, texting is hindering students’ abilities to focus in class, hurting their grades. Finally, college entrance officers are reporting application essays with tech speak and acronym shortcuts being submitted by prospective students that end up causing the student to be denied entrance to the college. Tech speak is becoming increasingly more evolved and complex in its own way. Students who use tech speak, or texting lingo, tend to ignore punctuation and capitalization rules, use...

Video Games

...these games require good hand eye coordination but they focus more on the mind. Strategy games, first person shooters, and adventure games are some of the most popular genres that are played by teens and young adults. With this growth of gaming it is assumed that these games will hinder a children's ability to learn in school and can affect a persons mental health negatively. People don't view these games as having any positive effects, and are viewed as a negative form of entertainment. The reality of this subject is that video games can supply many benefits towards the human brain, give us new ways of reacting to problems, and can expand a child's potential in their education. Since teens and young adults spend a good amount of time interacting with these games through their everyday schedule it has been given a negative title by most parents. Parents fear for their child's education and doubt that video games actually have any benefits towards the brain. These games contain a lot of problem solving which forces the player to use their brain quick and instinctively. Our brains aren't used to these quick rapid actions on a daily basis so it exercises us to solve problems quicker and more efficient. In the article Video Games Boost Brain Power by Michelle Trudeau, she supports how these games help us with life “And these...

Parenting with Technology

...also have a writing system and the rest are just spoken. (1) All of those languages, spoken or not are tools of communication. Communication is the background of modern society and the fundamental means of being a civilized country, and how we communicate has changed dramatically over the centuries from grunting and writing on rocks to a very wide variety of methods in communication that we see today. Today, we often communicate with technology. We use email, on laptops and cell phones through wireless networks in hotspots all over our cities and communities. With cell phones, it is rare that you cannot instantly make a phone call and speak to someone immediately. Text messaging is yet another new language has been developed to communicate within in our society. Finally we use the Internet and social networking sites to keep in touch via live video, instant pictures, and so much more. Information is almost always a click away. In this multifaceted time of communication we need to learn the languages of our kids. Communication has always been the key to good parenting. Now we can use the tools of the 2000’s to be the best parents possible. The cell phone has changed communication, as we know it. Every time I missed school as a teen by 10 am the phone would ring with a call from the school office. I knew if I wanted to play hooky all I had to do is make it home before my parents did and get that message. When I was a kid my favorite excuse when I was out too late...

...The Social Media Effect by Aryn LipNicki (link: http://arynlipnicki.wordpress.com/2013/05/17/the-social-media-effect) Personal Satisfaction - the largest negative effect of social media is the fact that studies have shown that Facebook actually makes us less satisfied with our own lives. The cause for this seems to be that we have a tendency to share only positive things in our life on social media, but not the negatives. As a result, we present a utopian picture of our lives to the outside world, despite what the reality may be. I don’t think it is always a conscious decision to do this, we just simply choose not to share the more challenging aspects of our lives with the world at large, often saving that for those closest to us. This is completely understandable, but from the receiving side of things, we are only seeing great things happening in our peers’ lives. Then also consider the increased magnitude of people from whom we see regular updates, compared to in the past. There is a big difference between hearing the good news from your dozen close friends, and hearing about all of the positive things that happen in the lives of your 140 Facebook friends. Suddenly we are constantly being bombarded with updates as people get engaged, married, have kids, buy houses, get job promotions, take amazing vacations – it can all be a bit overwhelming. My takeaway from all this: realistically this isn’t something that is going to change, but try to keep in mind the effect as you use...

Technology's Effects on the Mind

...Helping or Hindering the Human Mind? I'm at a constant battle with the modern day technology. I often feel like I was born in the wrong era, as an overwhelming amount of new technology is constantly being introduced. We are in an age where we have any answer to any question at our fingertips, we are all connected through social media, and we live in a 'selfie' culture. However, is all of this technology good for us and moving us forward, or is it making us regress as a species? The question made me curious, so I dove into research. The first step in my research was the most obvious, I typed in 'Does technology decrease intelligence?' into Google. The first article that popped up was from Medical Daily' and after looking at the sources and the page, I decided it was a pretty credible read. The article makes many good points, an interesting one being that technology literally affects us physically. Through studies done, they found technology lowered our levels of gray matter. Working out where to go ourselves creates mental maps and creates more stimuli in the brain, though we give that up when using GPS. That same concept also applies to learning-instead of learning on our own anymore, we look up answers online. It's been proven that when we self teach and find our answers through work we create more brain stimuli, and we retain the information better. Contemporary technology has weakened our capacity for deep processing, which can be gained by reading extended texts, though...
