Textual summary, “How facts backfire”
In the article “How facts backfire”, Joe Keohane discusses the effect of ignorance and misinformation on the way society feels about topics that they strongly believe in. With the help of few studies done between 2005 and 2006, Keohane is able to argue that political partisans are one of the groups who tend to be the most misinformed, yet they are even more set on what they consider to be correct information.
Keohane points out that those who make decisions on how our country runs, voters, are biased on their decisions, because they believe they made the best decision possible. Keohane states that for those who have a strong opinion in education, health care reform, immigration, affirmative action, and gun control actually have the least knowledge in these topics, but yet they will have the most difficult time changing their minds, also known as the “I know I’m right” syndrome. …show more content…
In fact, this group of people who were surveyed where actually the most uneducated in this topic. This study proved that when people are faced with oppositions that challenge their mindset they will alter the information so it can fit into their own way of thinking.
At the end of the article, Keohane discusses possible solutions that might help those who are misled by information. One solutions would be targeting those with lower self-esteem since they are the ones who tend to feel threaten and choose to ignore correct information. Besides targeting people with low self-esteem, it is being suggested that misleading sources should be shamed due to the lack of accurate information being provided. When someone is given accurate facts that are against their judgment, they may automatically reject the information because they refuse to accept that they may be wrong.
