How Honor Roll Changed My Life

Throughout my childhood, I took life way too easy. I never really found school to be much important in life when compared to the football or baseball games that came on TV. Yet, I still worked really hard, finishing my homework each night, but I never really found true success, like getting all A’s in a school year. I was always jealous of my younger brother who never got below a 100% on anything that he did. He finished second in a law day contest in the state, and achieved high success (perfect scores) on the NJ ASK. On the other hand, I was really lazy. I got honor roll sometimes, but this wasn’t good enough. A lot of cousins didn’t really think I was going to succeed academically in life. I always thought to myself, I’m going to get that high honor roll next year, but sadly I kept on being hesitant, procrastinated all the time, and got even more sad. …show more content…
I made sure that I never lost a point on the homework grade, started to study for test way before the last minute, and finally I started to love school, and more importantly learning. The first year of my high school, I received honors with distinction for the first time in my life. Later on, I got inducted as a member of the National Honors Society. During this induction ceremony, I wept silently inside, because for the first time I’ve achieved what seemed like everyone doubted of what I couldn’t

Personal Narrative: Receiving Honor Roll

...Dribbling the ball down the YMCA court. The ball slipping from my hand every with step taken from me. All that was heard was the giggles and chuckles of all the other kids in the gym. That was my biggest downfall during the early stages of playing my favorite sport. Those experiences I encountered as a young child really made me a different person. Would not be the student, player or person I am today if it was not for the experiences I went through. Being harassed and teased by the way I played basketball taught me that I can not let little things get to me. As the caterpillar that I am, waiting to sprout into a butterfly and go on my own, off to college. I had a time alone and realized the difference in my life since middle school. As...

Town over City

...crazy how I got to where I am today actually. One thing adds up to the other. Things have changed a lot, but thankfully I turned out to be a good person. My life has had its ups and downs, but I’m just glad to be here. I was born in Lakewood, NJ on December 19th, 1997. One present I will never forget was my scooter that my dad bought me. I learned to ride it before I learned to run. I was raised in Lakewood and lived there until 2004, when my parents decided that we’d have a better future if we moved to a different town. By the time we moved, my parents have had two more kids. It was five of us total, I was very close to my older sister, and we did everything together. The first school I went to was Clifton Avenue Grade School. There I made a lot of friends and always looked forward to school every day. Growing up, I was always good with making friends. I was also very smart and cute. Towards the end of this school year, my family and I moved to Brick Township. I went to Veterans Memorial Elementary School from first-fifth grade. It was always fun going to school; life was so simple back then. I was always the tallest kid in my class, and that made me happy. Now I’m average and I hate it. In the fourth grade, I found out that I had ADHD. I was put on medication which helped me concentrate, but made me sick if I didn’t eat breakfast before taking it. Towards the end of fifth grade, my parents got divorced and that changed my life forever. When my mom left, she took my brother...

...you don’t push yourself past your limits you will never be able to overcome anything. I was like that for a while, I always wanted to give up and not face my obstacles. Although I realized that you eventually have to overcome any obstacles you may have, I decided that it was time to overcome my obstacles. My first obstacle that I needed to overcome was being shy. At first, I could never really talk in front of people I would always get really nervous. Every time I had to get up and talk in front of people I would always say “uhm” between everything. Secondly, all through high school I had a hard time getting up in front of people and presenting projects. I would always make my presentation quick and short. Finally, but the time I was a senior in high school I was able to overcome my shyness. I was able to get up in front of people without getting really nervous. My second obstacle that I needed to overcome was being stressed about class work. At first, when I started freshmen year of high school I honestly thought that I wouldn’t have a lot of work to do. Well, I was wrong, I had a lot of work. Secondly, by my sophomore year of high school, I had so much work to do. I was so stressed out because on top of my school work I was also doing a high school sport. I would be up till 10 or 11 o’clock doing homework. Finally, by my junior and senior year of high school, I didn’t have that much work to do because they encourage you to start looking at colleges and to...

More Than Just a Game

...More than Just a Game People often consider football as just a game or sport, but to others it’s not just a game or sport. Football has changed my life in many different ways. For the first time in my life, I was able to understand the concepts of life when joined the Independence High Football Team. It showed how I use to be an outsider to actually feeling part of something. I now have a totally different outlook on life. When I enrolled into Independence High School I would considered myself as an outsider or a trouble maker. I was always getting into trouble every time I look up. The teachers at school couldn’t understand why I caused so much trouble. It wasn’t like I use to associate with a lot of people, so they knew it wasn’t just to impress friends or be a class clown. I made the honor roll every six weeks, so they knew I was an intelligent young man, but for some strange reason I was always getting into trouble. The last incident that I got into was a fight in the bathroom. The principal’s secretary didn’t know what else to do with me so they wanted to kick me out of school. When they walked back into the office they told me that a woman name Mrs. Stewart vouched for me and insisted that we keep you in school as long as you remain out of trouble and maintained a 2.0 G.P.A. My first thought was why would my English teacher Mrs. Stewart vouch for me if all I did was cause trouble in her class? When I went to her class the next day I asked her, “Why did you vouch for me...

The Life of a Rat

...The Life of a Rat I ratted myself out and it changed my life. I was on the AB honor roll in the ninth grade. This was true until I met a girl, who I thought was my friend, named Megan. By the end of the first semester, I had dropped out of volleyball, glee club and had started ditching classes and smoking in the restroom. One day we heard the band was out on a field trip so we went to their personal bathroom to smoke and hang out, just the two of us. Turns out, she wanted to be nosy. She started going through the teacher’s desk and papers. I admit I took a cool looking pen from his desk. We were laughing and playing around. Megan opened a file cabinet drawer and pulled out an envelope, full of money. The band had been having car washes and other fundraisers to raise money. I felt a lump in my throat. I knew what was happening, and I couldn’t stop it. She put the envelope in her shirt and ran back to the bathroom. I had no idea how much was in it, and a part of me did not want to know. Locking the door behind us, Megan reached in the envelope and pulled a small amount out and shoved it in my hand and said, “Here, now, do not say a word and no one will ever know it was us.” I had such an uneasy feeling, about all of it. The bell rang and we went to our lockers and then to lunch. With the money (which was only $120, but back then was like having $1,000 when you’re that young) in my sock the intercom came on and was telling us to all head to the gym. The whole school was...

Start over

...Pedro Torres Pj Clark English Comp. 1 December 3, 2015 Start Over I have made many mistakes in my life, from saying the wrong thing to someone or just being an ass, mistakes are common. If I had the opportunity to start over and fix mistakes I have made I would do it in a heartbeat. I would change the time I hurt the people I loved, how I acted and approached high school, and last I would have focused a lot more in staying in shape and doing good in sports. It’s often said we hurt the people we love the most and that couldn’t be more true. If I could go back and change how I handled past relationships I would have the weight of the world off my shoulder. I was a big cheater I literally had a different girl for everyday of the week. I would have sex with a girl then never talk to her again. I’m pretty sure there are some little ME’s running around the world right now. Am I proud of that no, but that’s the life I chose. I also would have changed how I spoke to my mother. Getting an attitude and being disrespectful to the women who did so much for me. I would come late and totally ignored the rules. I would tell her how she was a bad mother and often say things I didn’t mean. If I could go back, I would do good for her. That includes doing what I’m asked to do and doing well in high school. When I was in high school I did not care. I played sports and to stay in sports all I would have to do is not get any F’s. I could get all D’s and go on to the next year without a question...

Montevallo Counterfeit Mission Statement

...When I was in the seventh grade, my English classes, which were meant to be for gifted students only, I had a teacher who had burned out. He was interested neither in providing material for us to study nor giving lessons on what we were expected to learn. Most days, the sequence of events in English class was this: come in, sit for roll, go to the computer lab and goof around until the class changed. Many fruitful things came from the inevitable boredom that ensued. The Montevallo Counterfeit, for example, was a student-led and distributed newspaper which published falsified reports loosely based on current school happenings, such as the relocation of a beloved student to a different school being explained by alien abduction. Although the majority of the time spent in this class was occupied with an empty mind, a well-needed break in the mundanity came in the form of a field trip with the entirety of the gifted students in my school. We met and, in addition to participating in team building...

...was skate.” Mason sounded sad. We sat in awkward silence for a bit, then, looking at my skateboard when I came up with an idea. “Here!” I looked up and so did everyone else. “I’ll come to the skate park!” This was the most excited I’d been in a while. Everyone just looked at me like I was crazy. “I’ll just watch.” I slipped in not the most convincing voice, But they all agreed to let me go anyway. I grabbed my skateboard with excitement and followed my friends to Hannah’s car. She’s the only one with a car, her car was a silver Honda. It was new, so it still smelt really good, like new car. Hannah was driving with Lachlan sitting shotgun. I was behind the driver's seat and Mason was next to me. “So, is Thunder Thud coming back?” asked Mason with a smile. We used to skate together all the time, me and him. The whole group liked to skate, just not as much as Mason and I. I opened my mouth with a smile as I was about to respond, Then Lachlan interrupted me. “Mason, he doesn’t...

Looking Glass Concept

...from the first day we are born. Those who ‘welcome’ us into the world, cuddle us, and feed us, in those first few minutes of life, will help develop the individual we become. We continue to grow through life and life’s experiences daily. Every day we interact with people in our lives. It could be babysitters, doctors, neighbors, teachers, professors, coaches, and our own family, to name a few. As we move through life we thus develop our own personal image of ourselves. This is not only created from our own thoughts, about ourselves, but also the influence and the perceptions that others have of us. This concept is called the ‘looking-glass self’. According to Dictionary.reference.com, the definition of this is, ‘the self-image an individual forms by imagining what others think of his or her behavior and appearance.’ The key word here is, ‘imagine.’ We are not influenced by the actual voiced opinion of others but we are influenced by what we believe or think we imagine other people’s opinions to be. Our perceptions of how others see us can be correct, or incorrect, thus feeding our imagination possible inaccurate thoughts and beliefs. Charles Horton Cooley (August 17, 1864 – May 7, 1929), an American sociologist and the eighth president of the American Sociological Association, shares this concept in three steps. 1. We imagine how we appear to another person. At times, this imagination is correct, but may also be wrong since it is merely based on our assumptions...

Grease Analysis

...when rock and roll was giving birth to the Sexual Revolution and everything in America culture was about to be turned upside down. Record companies were releasing more than a hundred singles every week and the country was about to explode. Grease, generally considered a trivial little musical about The Fabulous Fifties, is really the story of America’s tumultuous crossing over from the 50s to the 60s, throwing over repression and tradition for freedom and adventure (and a generous helping of cultural chaos), a time when the styles and culture of the disengaged and disenfranchised became overpowering symbols of teenage power and autonomy. Originally a rowdy, dangerous, over-sexed, and insightful piece of alternative theatre, Grease was inspired by the rule-busting success of Hair and shows like it, rejecting the trappings of other Broadway musicals for a more authentic, more visceral, more radical theatre experience that revealed great cultural truths about America. An experience largely forgotten by most productions of the show today. Like Hair before it and The Rocky Horror Show which would come a year later, Grease is a show about repression versus freedom in American sexuality, about the clumsy, tentative, but clearly emerging sexual freedom of the late 1950s, seen through the lens of the middle of the Sexual Revolution in the 1970s. It’s about the near carnal passion 1950s teenagers felt for their rock and roll, the first art form that actually changed human sexuality...

Developmental Psychological Analysis

...Changes are inevitable. Most of the things are bound to change while few remains as it is. Changes happen as people continue to grow with their life. Similar to what old saying goes: “What you had, shapes who you are” which implies that people are shape to what they become because of those changes they had experienced. The study of developmental psychology holds the similar objective of this cliché phrase. Developmental psychology, as it says, study the various factors and influences that are bound to affect and form people as to who will they become. As I go through various changes in life myself, some experiences I have been through brings out the best of me; however, there are some that still haunts me down. These changes in my development...
