Laughter Is the Best Medicine All people have at one point in their lives felt some type of pain either emotionally or physically. Perhaps it was you breaking a bone, or maybe your grandmother passing. And I’m sure all of you have found something that makes those times a little easier to deal with. I personally have always found it easier to cope when you are inflicted by pain to find some humor in the situation to make the situation a little more tolerable. Whether faced with the pain of injury or being hurt emotionally, I have always found that just a bit of laughter can make the situation one hundred times better. When I lived in Alaska, my family and I faced some of the harshest winters on record. Moving from Maryland where it was odd if we even accumulated a foot of snow during the winter months, we were in for a big change. We moved to Anchorage Alaska in January, right in the middle of the winter. I had never seen so much snow in my life. Because of so much snow accumulation, businesses would constantly have to use giant snowplows to remove all of the snow from the parking lots. After the plows had scraped all the snow off the top of the surface, it was not out of the ordinary for there to be a solid sheet of ice covering the parking lots. Being a new resident of the state, I underestimated at how much ice would actually be throughout the parking lot. When the parking lots were full of ice I always thought that it was the most fun thing in the world to slide across the ice on my feet. I found this fun and all, until one day it took a turn for the worst. We were at the local Wal-Mart and we had just got dumped on with four feet of snow. The snowplows were right in the middle of clearing out the parking lot so they were leaving paths of solid ice, perfect for sliding on. My mom never fancied me sliding across the ice. She would always say “You’re going to hurt yourself” being the little rebel I was I refused to listen to my mom and started to run at full speed so that I could slide to my full potential. I started my slide flawless like always, but coming up was a patch of concrete that was uncovered by ice. I didn’t even notice it until I was plummeting to the earth full force. All I felt was my face crushing against the ground. I thought to myself “My nose is surely broken”. I tried to recover from the spill quickly and with style so that I wouldn’t have to deal with my mother and brother making fun of me. I got up and my brother was already rolling on the ground with laughter. My mom also had come to a sudden stop and was laughing more than I had ever seen her laugh before. Both of them were too busy laughing that they couldn’t even come to see if I was okay. Instead my brother comes up to me still in the midst of his laughter trying to do a play by play of what had happened. My frown was instantly turned into rolling laughter as I could begin to just imagine how foolish I had to have just looked. The laughter almost instantly made me forget about the injury that had just happened to my face. For weeks after the incident, every time I would look at my injuries in the mirror I would just laugh at myself and at how foolish I was.
Another time that laughter presented itself and made a hurtful time easier to deal with, was when our Golden Retriever Chloe passed away. That dog was a part of our family for 12 years and it was the toughest thing to deal with when she died. But of all times to find laughter I found it when we were burying her in our backyard. My dad had dug a hole right out between 2 trees in the woods behind our house to put her in. The ceremony had every intention of being completely serious, to mourn the death of our dog. But then the mood was lightened a little bit. We buried the dog and my mom thought it would be a good idea to go around and say our fondest memory of Chloe. I started by saying how much I liked it when she he would come and wake me up every morning by jumping on my bed and lick my face. My dad talked about how she had been such a good dog to take camping and hunting. My mom always loved just having someone to cuddle with. Then my brothers turn came and he made us all look out into the woods, and in the brush was a pair of underpants. We all knew that Chloe had taken a liking to stealing the underpants out of the dirty clothes and ripping them apart outside. At that instant we all got giant smiles on our faces and broke out in laughter. What had intended to be a sad day instantly turned into not a day of mourning but a day of celebrating the life of our dog. When bitter things present themselves in life, I’m sure everyone has their own way of coping with the situation trying to make it good as possible. Laughter has always been my way of getting out of those problems and getting through life with a smile on my face. No matter what, laughter is always there to make the hurt, hurt less. I will continue to cherish the moments where laughter has brought happiness into an otherwise rough situation.

...September 2012 Looking up I remember seeing my brilliant sister’s face, Rania, playing with me and resembling something so caring. There was never a time she wasn’t strutting with confidence. Growing up my sister always put others before herself including me. As the middle child she never refused when it came to doing something for my oldest sister and I. When it was time for Rania to graduate, and go off to college, she did not burden my parents by asking for tuition. Instead, she worked at William’s, a pipeline company, until she was able to be completely financially stable. Although, my sister had to work very hard, she never complained. I cannot recall a single moment when she was pessimistic around me even if she had a rough day. Because of her perseverance, she has caused me to have an entire new take on life. Knowing her struggles, I was able to use her life as an example to set me on the right path. She impacted me day by day without me even knowing it. As I look back at all I have accomplished in life, I realize if it wasn’t for her I would not be the man I am today. When I face adversities I refer back to my sister, and how she persevered through things much more difficult than anything I would be facing at the time. Through Cross country, Track, Football, and Basketball my sister was the thing that kept me going. Without her I would not have a strong mentality, and would not be able to see the “light” at the end of the tunnel. I now know that I should have no excuse in...

I love people and also willing to help those in need. I am able to sympathize and empathize with people who may have problems that others might feel uncomfortable with. I am also a very good listener. I love to share the Gospel with others and bring the lost to know Jesus Christ. I am truly blessed to have these gifts that God has given me. PART TWO: Specifically, how can you use your gifts at this time? How might you misuse your gifts? Be specific. There are many ways I can use my gifts today. In my Church there are people who often come to me to “unload” what’s going on in their Lives. I am always there to listen and give them the best advice I can. I show mercy by going with a group from the church to visit the ones who are shut-ins and letting them know that we care for them and that they are not alone. Outside the church I volunteer for Domestic and Sexually abused women’s shelter. I do a weekly Bible study and I teach some of them how to cook. I soon will be taking the required training to be a Christian Counselor. I also post Scripture, Devotionals, and prayers on my face book page. There are many ways I can misuse...

English 101 Streecar Named Desire

...Throughout the play Blanche compare’s Stanley’s behavior as animalistic. In many different situations throughout the play Stanley prove’s Blanche’s Ideal of how he acts as an animal. I believe that this is true based on how blanche describes him in these situations. The first instance where Stanley show’s how he act’s like an animal, is in the opening scene of Blanche Stella and Stanley all being together. In this scene he throw’s a piece of meat at stella as if he is an ape. Stella seem’s to show no regard to Stanley’s behavior. Blanche on the other hand is completely shocked and cant imagine anyone treating her sister that way, especially her husband. Blanche waits until she is able to get Stella alone and confront’s her about the situation. She says “ He act’s like an animal, has an animal’s habits....yes, something ape like about him, like one of those pictures I’ve seen in anthropological studies!” (74). This kind of behavior is foreign too Blanche and she cant understand how or why anyone would want to be with someone who acts in this manner. I completely agree with Blanche’s thought’s toward’s Stanley because there is no reason why any husband should treat their spouse this way. Even though it might have been more common in New Orleans at this time for men to be above women in a sense, I see no reason as to why a husband would throw meat as his wife and expect her to take it without question. The next scene in which Stanley is showed as a reference to an animal is on...

I Believe In Forgiveness Research Paper

...I Believe in Forgiveness Six years ago, I saw my father in Brooklyn, NY. When we saw each other it was a cold feeling. I was still hurting from when I saw in 2008, when I left Los Angeles, CA and moved Southaven, MS. I didn’t know if I should have been happy or should I approach him with hatred. I was stuck and he was stuck too. The so called hug didn’t feel factual and the laughs were bogus. My insides wanted to scream with hatred filled words. I wanted to ask him “Why you don’t love?” “I am your daughter!” But the words were jammed deep inside my throat. My father was in out of my life throughout my childhood. At the age of 9, he had gotten remarried and another child which is my half-sister. He had his perfect family and I was incomplete....

(3) Explain why you believe these four inventions or contributions are the most useful inventions or contributions from the ancient Chinese. (4) Identify one invention or contribution that you cannot live without and explain why. The Ancient Chinese Contributions (1) Gunpowder One of the inventions created by Ancient China gunpowder as early first century and was used at that time to make medicine for perpetual rejuvenation. Black gunpowder was not invented till the end of the ninth century and was first used to make fireworks, and later the lighting of fireworks became a Chinese tradition to celebrate festivals. The gunpowder was used in weapons at the end of the 10th Century, when firearms such as exploding arrows heads, flintlock rifles and cannon became available on a large scale. During the 18th century when Western powers invaded China, the Chinese troops were still using flintlock rifles and cannons. At the end of the 14th century a Chinese named Wan Hu fitted a chair with 47 prototype self-made rockets and held a large kite in his hands. His plan was to fly into space and then float back down to the Earth using the kite. The rockets ended up exploding and killing Wan Hu but in his honor In the 1970s, the International Astronomical Union named a lunar crater after...

I also have not had an English class since my senior year of high school, so I have not had to write many papers since then. In these previous English classes, most of the writing has been research papers. Comparing this project to previous projects in other English classes, I have had much more flexibility in the topic to write about and I feel that in this class, the project topic is much more applicable to me and my interests, being that it was about my future career. Ancient Chinese Inventions

...Ancient Chinese Inventions Assignment 2 Christopher Macinkowicz 8/23/2013 Professor Ibrahim H. Alsaeed, Ph.D. World Cultures I Many people do not realize how many different and important inventions China has added to our world. Our everyday life would much different if it weren’t for the Chinese. From fishing reels to sunglasses, alcohol to the umbrella, many inventions that we take for granted are the result of ancient Chinese innovation. Even the fork and toilet paper were invented by the Chinese people. Although each of the inventions I have already mentioned is extremely important in their own way, there are four main Chinese inventions that I believe have changed the course of history. They are, in no particular order, gunpowder, paper, the compass, and silk. I will discuss each one of these four very important inventions in this paper and also reveal which one I believe has been the most important to my personal life. First off, let’s talk about gunpowder. Gunpowder is a highly volatile compound that is made from potassium nitrate and charcoal. Originally used to treat skin diseases as far back as 140 AD, eventually the Chinese people mastered the art of igniting the gunpowder to launch fireworks and rockets which were used to defend China from Mongol invaders as early as the 9th or 10th century AD. Gunpowder has since been used by people all over the world for purposes ranging from hunting to warfare. Were it not for the discovery of gunpowder...

Top Invention from China

...more inventions and contributions that the Ancient Chinese developed but the main four that I believe to be the most important are silk, paper, porcelain, and good old gun powder. The Chinese invented silk more than 2,100 years ago. The Chinese didn’t’ just invent silk; they mastered the technique of weaving the silk. Once silk was developed it was used to make fishing line, musical instruments, bow strings, luxury paper known as rag paper, robes and other garments. I believe silk to be one of the top four inventions made by the Chinese because once silk was developed it became China’s number one source of revenue. Silk also became a big trading piece on the Silk Road; people were willing to pay the same weight in gold for silk! Today we still use silk and China is still the lead runner on producing silk. Paper is another invention that was one of China’s most important inventions and contributions to the world. People have been writing for years and years in their own language on clay tablets, walls, and other things that weren’t very easy to transport. Once the Chinese invented paper, it became easier to transport documents, which is why I believe this invention to be in the top four inventions and contributions. Paper is also a major historical development during the eras before the Renaissance because the Chinese people were able to record their historical events easier. Once paper was invented, it probably had a great...

Pit Bulls Argument Essay

...For my first artifact, I wrote an argumentative research paper over the myths associated with Pit Bulls a breed-specific legislation. This essay’s intended audience is adults who live in communities where breed-specific legislation is either in effect or in areas where they are thinking about instating it. The purpose of this artifact was to disprove the myths associated with the Pit Bull and breed-specific legislation, through the presentation of scientific evidence and expert testimonials. In order to persuade this particular audience the paper needs to contain numerous facts and statistics from various credible sources, like peer-reviewed journals, in order to persuade them into accepting facts rather than the popular myths associated with this topic. In order to create a successful argumentative research paper one must follow several rules and expectations. For example, in the introduction of the paper, the author must give the thesis, research question, or overall purpose of the paper so that the audience knows what to expect from the rest of the paper, as well as providing context and...

Reflective Essay: My Growth As A Writer

...The final position paper helped me grow as a writer even more than the previous two essays we have done. The reason I feel this way is because as I was beginning to write the paper I caught myself analysing what I was writing from the beginning, and not just waiting to look back at the end. My writing style matured also while writing this paper. I realized what words to avoid and found acceptable words to replace the ones I could not use. These are reasons I believe I grew as a writer from this one paper. Even though I did grow as a writer through this paper it does not mean it was a smooth writing process. Researching was not hard because I already had most of my sources and new exactly what I was looking for in the new articles I had to find. Once I had all of the sources I needed to write this paper is when the challenges appeared. I had troubles finding a good introduction to start my paper, and my thesis was not turning out how I wanted it to. After I finally got an introduction that was decent I focused on writing my body paragraphs. Organization was something I had struggled with in the past, so I spent time deciding what order I should write ideas in each paragraph. This was frustrating at times because it seemed like no matter how I organized the details it did not...

The Origin of Old-Earth Geology and Its Ramifications for Life in the 21st Century

...Ashley Dr. Travis Bradshaw PHSC 210 April 7, 2014 Journal Article Review Introduction In this paper I will discuss and review Dr. Terry Mortenson’s article about The Origin of Old-Earth Geology and its Ramifications for Life in the 21st Century. I will discuss the many strengths of this article and also the weaknesses that are also involved in Dr. Terry Mortenson’s paper. Brief Overview and Main Points Dr. Mortenson’s paper discussed the many different scientific views of how the Earth was created from the point of view of many different scientists such as scriptural geologists, uniformitarians and catastrophists. Each have their own views on the history of the Earth and how it was created. Dr. Mortenson then goes into explaining how these scientific theories have impacted our society today. Towards the end of the paper, we learn the author’s view of how the Earth was created and how it impacts society today. Article Strengths I think Dr. Mortenson did very well writing this article in many different ways. Everything appeared to be stated in a professional and grammatically correct way, with little to no errors. Dr. Mortenson also does a great job in describing each scientist according to their different theories such as scriptural geologists by providing just enough detail. He didn’t go overboard by boring the reader with too many facts about each scientists, but clearly stated the facts needed and their scientific views without straying from the main topic. Dr...

...expressions and belief systems of patients as a health care provider. For this assignment, I decided to research Christianity and one other diverse faith group; interviewing said friend about her faith, Naturalism. In the health care industry, health care providers whose spiritual beliefs differ from their own personal beliefs are a common issue. Learning how to appropriately and respectfully handle each individual’s diversity and faith or belief system is of the upmost importance within the health care industry. Interview Assessment Analysis When conducting my interview with my close friend, Asyia Aanandi, asking a wide range of questions on her faith was required for further assessment; furthermore, the best way to incorporate Asyia’s beliefs of a Naturalist toward her philosophy of providing care from the perspective of her faith. Asyia Aanandi’sAanandi spiritual beliefs are that of a Naturalist, believing in only one single notion; Homo-sapiens feel, think, and act on, due to “chemical reactions” inside ones brain and body. Naturalism is the belief that as humans, acting on ones desires is not only validated, but acceptable; to live the way one was created to be. All phenomenon’sphenomenons are explained through science, voiding out the very existence of everything supernatural. Beginning with my interview with Asyia, I started with the most important question, “Do you believe in continued health if you happen to fall unresponsive, such as a coma?” Asyia then...
