Information at Work

Information at Work Have you ever wondered if information is useful in day to day life? Information is used every single day by everybody. Whether it is information used by a single person, or information that is used by organizations, it is useful every day. Information is used both formally and informally within my organization. Information flows through various methods including verbal and non-verbal methods. In the restaurant I currently work for, we receive information from many different resources including customers, corporate offices, the internet, the owner of the restaurant and many other sources. Information that comes from the customer is often the most valuble information within the restaurant. This is usually information that gathered from the opioions and comments of the customer. We use comment cards, and send customer survey requests for those who provide their email address. This information is used to gather information on how well a product is doing, and also helps us to know how the food is being prepared by the cooks. Information is very useful within the business; it helps to keep the business process flowing. Another major way information is used within the organization is through advertising. Information is dispersed from the business to the advertiser and to the potential customers. This is information dispersed through the use of radio, paper, and electronic methods. After customers order and use specific codes heard or seen through this information flow is organized by our point-of-sale software and helps us manage our advertising cost. Our system divides the information into separate sections for radio, mail, e-mail, and employee based advertising. There is another flow of information within the organization at the base level. Information is passed from the corporate office to the restaurant owner.

...Ch.6 Telecommunications, the internet and wireless technologies Components of a simple network: • NIC (Network Interface Card): to incorporate any laptop to an existing network. • NOS (Network Operating System): to share network resources & route communications on a LAN. • Hubs & switches help route traffic on a network to the right computing device. • Router: when 2 or more networks are connected to each other, it sends data transmissions to the correct device from the internet. Digital Networking Technologies: 3 types, 1. Client/server computing: servers connect to many clients. 2. Packet switching: method of delivering data across a local or a long distance connection, it packages data in units (packets) which identifies intended recipient. 3. TCP(Transmission Control Protocol)/IP(Internet Protocol): a set of protocols to get data from one network device to another. Signal is the transmission of data. Analog signals can be converted into digital signals by using a modem. Analog signals are replicas of sound waves that can be distorted with the noise and drop the quality of transmission. Digital signals have a faster rate of transmission. LAN (Local Area Network): the topology (place) of a LAN can vary greatly, - Star: if the host computer goes down the whole network goes down. - Bus: all computers in the network are linked with cables and treated equally. - Ring: no central host PC, if one PC goes down the rest can still process data & transactions. Marketing Myopia

...Section: Published: 6th Sense of Business Wednesday, May 16 - 2007 at 12:59 (GMT+4) Marketing Myopia – The Converging World You may be familiar with Theodore Levitt's classic paper - 'Marketing Myopia'. It called on marketers to redefine their competition and alerted them not to have a narrow short term view of their market. It spoke about how firms lost hold of markets because they were product-focused rather than customer-focused. The paper can be found at the Harvard Business Online site if readers want to download the original article. To quote: 'The railroads did not stop growing because the need for passenger and freight transportation declined. That grew. The railroads are in trouble today not so much because that need was filled by others (cars, trucks, airplanes, and even telephones), but because it was not filled by the railroads themselves. They let others take customers away from them because they assumed themselves to be in the railroad business rather than in the transportation business. The reason they defined their industry incorrectly was that they were railroad oriented instead of transportation oriented; they were product oriented instead of customer oriented.' Levitt's paper and the same principles still hold great relevance for present day businesses. From a client and market research consultancy perspective these are still amongst the key questions we are asking today. In market research if we define the competitive framework too narrowly our clients...

...utilized. It does a company no good to bring in the latest software or create new systems if they do not increase productivity and efficiency. This is where the MIS professional comes in. Working closely with people in all aspects of a business, the MIS team will work to create a process that is right for the company’s needs now and in the future. Unlike some technology-focused careers, MIS is a people-centered role and professionals must understand not only the technology that they work with the how to strategically help the people that they work with. Who Succeeds? MIS professionals have a variety of skills and abilities, including: * Proficiency in oral and written communication * The ability to work well as a member of a team * An ability to work with a diverse “clientele” within the organization * Good interpersonal skills * Flexibility * Strong technical skills and the willingness to learn new technologies * Management skills * Strong analytical skills Career Paths MIS does not have a linear career path like other areas of business. Rather, people gain the skills, background and knowledge to work in a variety of areas within business. Often, graduates will work as systems analysts, information technology consultants, database administrators or in quality assurance. Technology jobs continue to be in high demand and pay well, and students who combine MIS with another concentration will be excellent candidates in the job market...
