INPUT AND OUTPUT DEVICES Chapter three of the textbook Computer Structure and Design is all about the different types of input and output devices that are found on many laptops and desktops. Input and output devices are ports that transfer information. Some examples of input and output ports are USB, HDMI and Network ports. I will discuss their functions and where they are located on the Dell Inspiron 3542 laptop. One of the most popular ports I use is the USB port. USB stands for universal serial bus. The three types of USB ports are USB 1.1, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. Each port transfers data but at different speeds. The USB 1.1 ports has a top speed of 12 Mbps. The USB 2.0 has a top speed of 480 Mbps. The USB 3.0 has the fastest transfer speed of 4,800 Mbps. The Dell Inspiron 3542 has three USB ports. On the left side of the laptop, there is one USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 port. The right side of the laptop has the other USB 2.0 port. Another port that is used to transfer information is the HDMI port. HDMI stands for high definition multimedia interface. The HDMI port and cord are used to transport digital video and audio from one device to another. Many smartphones, tablets, dvd and blu ray players laptops, high definition televisions, computer monitors and cameras have an HDMI port. Most of the electronic devices I mentioned usually come with one HDMI port. High Definition televisions are equipped with two or three HDMI ports. The Dell Inspiron 3542 has one HDMI port on the left right above the network port. The last port I will discuss is the network port. A network port is jack that is used to connect a device to a wired network. It is also known as an Ethernet port. The network or Ethernet cable looks like a telephone jack but it is slightly bigger and wider. A router or cable modem is usually plugged into the network port to connect laptops or desktops to the internet. Some computers can have up to four network ports. The Dell Inspiron 3542 has one network or Ethernet port on the left side between the HDMI and USB ports. Input and output devices and ports are designed to make transferring data fast and efficient. Reading the chapter about all the different types of input and output devices is helping me identify and become familiar with the structure of computers.

But this is the most used port out of any on a computer. Now, there are devices that can be considered an input as well as an output device. One of these devices that is considered to be both could be a modem. The case being, that it retrieves but also sends data at the same time, thus being an input and output device simultaneously. ...Most I/O devices interface to the CPU in a fashion quite similar to memory. Indeed, many devices appear to the CPU as though they were memory devices. To output data to the outside world the CPU simply stores data into a "memory" location and the data magically appears on some connectors external to the computer. Similarly, to input data from some external device, the CPU simply transfers data from a "memory" location into the CPU; this "memory" location holds the value found on the pins of some external connector. An output port is a device that looks like a memory cell to the computer but contains connections to the outside world. An I/O port typically uses a latch rather than a flip-flop to implement the memory cell. When the CPU writes to the address associated with the latch, the latch device captures the data and makes it available on a set of wires external to the CPU and memory system (see Figure 7.1).
