Math and Me
Vanessa Bashore
MM212: College Algebra

“We both just did out fives yesterday, how can she be doing her sixes already today?” I can remember thinking this like it was yesterday instead of 29 years ago. I was in first grade, and we were doing our times tables. I had been the first one to do all of my numbers so far in the class, and now Sara was up there doing her sixes before I knew them. That would just not do for me, so that night I went home and learned the rest of my numbers, six through nine, to be able to do them for the teacher the very next day. I guess you can say that this is where my love for math started. I am not saying that I never had to study or that I have never struggled with any math in my life, but for the most part, most of the math classes I have taken in my life have come pretty easily to me. I love when you are struggling with something in math and all of a sudden you have that a-ha moment where everything suddenly makes sense. In the past I have taken all the basics in math including Algebra and Geometry. However, these courses were also taken almost 20 years ago, and I have to admit that I am a bit rusty when it comes to all of the formulas and properties. Even though I may not remember all of the formulas, I still consider my previous courses a success. I may not remember the exact formula, but I do remember that the formulas exist and it is just a matter of looking the formula up and plugging in the right numbers to get the correct answer. For example, I remember how I used to love doing proofs in geometry, the longer the better. I probably could not jump right into one of those long proofs now, but I don’t think it would take me long to get back to being able to solve one. This is because math is always the same. It is not like English where the rules are always changing. Two plus two will always be four, and this is one of the reasons why I truly enjoy math. Overall, I would say that I am pretty good at math. I mean, I took this course as one of my electives, so I have to be somewhat confident in my mathematical abilities. I have actually done all of the practice problems in the book thus far. I work as a cashier at one of the local gambling cafes in the area, and most of the time it is pretty boring there. I use my Algebra text as a way to pass the time. It is better than any puzzle book that I have ever bought. Plus, being good at math is definitely a benefit where I work since I deal with large quantities of cash that I am responsible for. I am majoring in medical transcription here at Kaplan. I was only required to take one math class for this degree, Survey of Mathematics. I did very well in that class and actually finished with a 100%. With that being said, I think that I will do very well in this class. I love the way the assignments are set up, and I don’t find the work amount overbearing. I don’t think that I will have too many issues with this class. I have skimmed through the text book for one thing, and it appears to be an excellent resource that explains the lesson very well. However, if I do find myself getting stumped in a way that I can’t figure out with the text, there is always the math lab and my fellow classmates. Peers are always an excellent source for help. Math is everywhere and is in everything. Whether you are baking a cake or balancing your bank accounts, math is an extremely important in everyone’s life. I may be going into medical transcription, but math is still going to play a role in my future career. Most transcriptionists are paid by the line with the average company counting 65 characters as a line. It would be useful to be able to figure out how much money you are making by doing the math. There is no escaping doing the math at some point, so you might as well become as good as you can at it. It will always work out in your benefit to be able to do your own figures.

Personal Narrative: Jackie Robinson's Life

...However, this didn’t seem to help much and I remained behind in math. My mother started helping me learn what I needed for math when I came home with a very low grade in math. With her help and an hour or so every night spent studying math, I managed to help get my grade higher. It wasn’t the best grade, certainly not an A, but it was still good enough that they did not try to hold me back because of it. I went on summer break that year, already not looking forward to the next school year. Towards the end of the summer, after much thinking and weighing the pros and cons, I finally came to the conclusion that I wanted to be homeschooled. I told my mother only a few days after I came to my decision, worried that she might turn me down and make me go. When I told her about wanting to be homeschooled she first let me know that I should have told her earlier, as I had only two to three weeks before school started. However, she didn’t turn me down and instead told me to give her all of the reasons that I wanted to be homeschooled, to ensure that they were good reasons and I wasn’t simply getting the back-to-school jitters. I wrote her a list of all...

Critical Literacy Narrative the streets of New York has taught me a vital lesson which shall rest beneath my soul until I drop dead. I have adapted to the fact that, one has no right to, offer tongue to their talents that lie within their physical structure. People assume they are full of natural endowments, and they are geniuses to have observed this particular gift awarded to them by the almighty. In reality, those aren’t talents unless the entire world has them as well. You may ponder upon this experience, which I reformed to, unfortunately this is the dreadful lesson New York has taught me. College Admissions Essay: What Motivates Me

...There are many things that motivate me, although for a short time there was almost nothing that motivated me. When I was young around seventh grade, I never really had anything to motivate me besides my parents just pushing me through school. Before moving into the eighth grade the school decided to have most of the students in my math class to be placed in an advanced math class. I was really upset going into eighth grade because I wasn't in the advanced classes, sadly all of my friends were. Before the advanced classes me and my friends were always in the more difficult classes so I always had the same group of people in my classes, so I never really talked to anybody outside of my class. When school started and I was in all different classes than my friends and I was really unhappy for a while. When it was time for math class, I didn't see how I could be in that class. When he finally starting teaching I was so bored he was teaching simple multiplication and it was incredibly boring. I asked my friends what they were doing and it was distributing variables into an...

Essay Scholarship

...only economically, but professionally as well. My goal is to teach math to the young adults in our local high schools. The scholarship would play an important part in my education by providing me with experience, knowledge and opportunities to improve myself as a teacher. My dream of becoming a teacher dates back to the days when I was a child. At school, I have always been the student who explains math to her classmates. Doing this is something that I have always enjoyed. Those experiences motivated me to pursue a career in education. Similarly, when I worked as a crew leader at McDonald’s, I taught the new employees how to perform the job. This helped to increase my desire to teach professionally. Later when I started working as a math and physics tutor at the Center for Students with Disabilities at El Paso Community College, I confirmed that teaching is something that I love to do and that I did not make a mistake when selecting my career. I obtained tremendous satisfaction in the difference my teaching made to the scholastic success of the students I tutored. In addition, I am interested in teaching as a career because I believe that as a teacher I will have the opportunity to make an impact on society. As a math teacher I will have the opportunity to develop the critical thinkers of the future. I will develop individuals who can analyze and find solutions to problems. It is my belief that if they can solve math problems, they can make a difference in the world by finding solutions...

Personal Statement

...During Year 10 I was lucky enough to be taught by a new trainee Maths teacher and was inspired by the energy and enthusiasm he brought to the classroom. His commitment to ensuring we would thrive and succeed was something I deeply admired. From that point on I have always had a keen focus on a career in Maths. It is a subject I am passionate about and I would love the opportunity to share this passion with others. I have devoted a large amount of time to acquire first-hand experience in the field of teaching and Mathematics. During a placement in a secondary school I observed key stage 3 and GCSE Maths lessons. This has given me a real insight to life in the classroom and has shown me the challenges I could face. In addition I have led presentations at both Sixth form and Year 6 open days at school. My role involved demonstrating Maths challenges and helping students to complete problems. With these opportunities I have been able to share my knowledge and passion of Mathematics with others and expand their understanding, which I found very rewarding. This has given me confidence in my own abilities; not just in Maths but my level of communication with others. Through my role as a Maths tutor I gained experience giving one to one sessions with Year 11 students. I planned sessions that would help them prepare for their GCSE Maths exam, being sat at higher level and foundation. I quickly learned how important it is to differentiate work so that all levels of abilities could be...

...decisions. As part of the two-part math course series, Math 157 is structured for grades K-8 pre-service teachers. This course comes as a continuation to the Math 156 course. The objective of the course Math 157 is to assist the learner with understanding day to day applications of Mathematics. This course can also be extended to students who find it challenging to grasp the basics of Mathematics. The curriculum for Math 157 consists of data analysis, application of geometry, application of measurements and last but not least, introduction to probability. To be more precise, the topic application of geometry involves solving problems related applications of two and three dimensional shapes. As an upcoming teacher, I believe that geometry can be found everywhere. To teach about two and three dimensional shapes in the classroom will be interesting because all around us exist two and three dimensional shapes. The chapter on measurements includes identification and application of tools, different techniques and formulas in determining measurements; and introduction to probability pertains to use of suitable statistical methods in analyzing data. The concepts that I learned in this course are very relevant in to the characteristic of a professional teacher. The information that I learned in Math 157 will help me to teach my students math. Algebra II: Science, Mathematics, Computer Science Program

...Algebra II is my favorite class related to the focus of the Science, Mathematics, Computer Science program. I learn many things that may help me in real-life situations and help me understand how computers work. One of the most interesting things I learned about was Linear Programming because we solved real-life problems using it. One problem was about a company selling two types of trail mix. Each type of trail mix used the same two ingredients, but different quantities. There were constraints on the ingredients. We learned to write equations for the constraints, graph them, and find a feasible region. We wrote the profit equation and tested the points of intersection from the feasible region to find which combination had the greatest profit. Matrices were also interesting to me. I found them fascinating because they help me understand how computer programs do complex functions. We learned about row reduction, determinants, and inverses. Study, work, and interaction are very important in math class....

Developing Mathematics Learning Skills

...Skills Introduction Mathematics skills play an important role in our lives. To understand math we must read our math books, and understand the use of technical terms like equation, integration and many more. Understanding terms is only part of learning mathematics skills. Comprehension and analysis is needed to understand math concepts. You cannot learn mathematics by being a spectator; you must perform the calculations yourself. Reading a solution in a book and watching someone else solve the problem is not sufficient, although it helps, you must use your brain to solve the problems and write out the full solution. If you are provided with the answers to a math problem or problems you may be able to see how each answer fits, but it is very different working out the problem yourself. The real understanding is if you can do the necessary work yourself or not. Mathematics Study Skills Knowing mathematical principles and concepts can help you to succeed in school and work. It is important to use study skills that apply well to math. The following are some study skills that should be utilized: * Study math everyday during the semester. * Have a specific time and place to study with few distractions. * Keep up to date with homework. * Find an alternative text when you are having trouble understanding the text. * Take notes and copy all the steps of the math problems. * Ask questions when you are confused. * Work problems until you understand them...

...memories of 8th grade math. Gage felt so strongly about Ms. Hurd, as I did to my math teacher Mrs. Mowery. Gage came to America from Greece when he was just a boy. Unlike me I was born and raised in America. I think I took that for grated after reading his story. I believe a lot of children in America take for grated the educational system we have in place. When entering into Greendale Elementary school, Gage felt like he would have a bit of knowledge from his schooling in Greece. As I felt like because I had gone to 7 grades. Soon I was mistaken. Mrs. Mowery was a young, beautiful, smart math teacher. She reminded me that learning never end's. Just because I made it to the 8th grade did not mean I was done learning. Gage went to school willing to learn, I went to school to socialize with my friends. My other teacher's did not try to get me to pay attention or get good grades. I think they just thought I was a lost cause. Mrs. Mowery took that time, not just with math but with being a student. She asked me to stay after school to help me with my math. For the first week I saw this as a punishment. Day after day I stepped in to that empty classroom, sitting in the same cold, hard, metal desk. That punishment soon faded as I realized what Mrs. Mowery was trying to do. Not only did I get help with my math, I got help with finding my place in the educational system. Like Gage, I was soon under Mrs. Mowery's spell. She was so kind and patient with me. She knew I did not want...
