Math and Me
Vanessa Bashore
MM212: College Algebra

“We both just did out fives yesterday, how can she be doing her sixes already today?” I can remember thinking this like it was yesterday instead of 29 years ago. I was in first grade, and we were doing our times tables. I had been the first one to do all of my numbers so far in the class, and now Sara was up there doing her sixes before I knew them. That would just not do for me, so that night I went home and learned the rest of my numbers, six through nine, to be able to do them for the teacher the very next day. I guess you can say that this is where my love for math started. I am not saying that I never had to study or that I have never struggled with any math in my life, but for the most part, most of the math classes I have taken in my life have come pretty easily to me. I love when you are struggling with something in math and all of a sudden you have that a-ha moment where everything suddenly makes sense. In the past I have taken all the basics in math including Algebra and Geometry. However, these courses were also taken almost 20 years ago, and I have to admit that I am a bit rusty when it comes to all of the formulas and properties. Even though I may not remember all of the formulas, I still consider my previous courses a success. I may not remember the exact formula, but I do remember that the formulas exist and it is just a matter of looking the formula up and plugging in the right numbers to get the correct answer. For example, I remember how I used to love doing proofs in geometry, the longer the better. I probably could not jump right into one of those long proofs now, but I don’t think it would take me long to get back to being able to solve one. This is because math is always the same. It is not like English where the rules are always changing. Two plus two will always be four, and this is one of the reasons why I truly enjoy math. Overall, I would say that I am pretty good at math. I mean, I took this course as one of my electives, so I have to be somewhat confident in my mathematical abilities. I have actually done all of the practice problems in the book thus far. I work as a cashier at one of the local gambling cafes in the area, and most of the time it is pretty boring there. I use my Algebra text as a way to pass the time. It is better than any puzzle book that I have ever bought. Plus, being good at math is definitely a benefit where I work since I deal with large quantities of cash that I am responsible for. I am majoring in medical transcription here at Kaplan. I was only required to take one math class for this degree, Survey of Mathematics. I did very well in that class and actually finished with a 100%. With that being said, I think that I will do very well in this class. I love the way the assignments are set up, and I don’t find the work amount overbearing. I don’t think that I will have too many issues with this class. I have skimmed through the text book for one thing, and it appears to be an excellent resource that explains the lesson very well. However, if I do find myself getting stumped in a way that I can’t figure out with the text, there is always the math lab and my fellow classmates. Peers are always an excellent source for help. Math is everywhere and is in everything. Whether you are baking a cake or balancing your bank accounts, math is an extremely important in everyone’s life. I may be going into medical transcription, but math is still going to play a role in my future career. Most transcriptionists are paid by the line with the average company counting 65 characters as a line. It would be useful to be able to figure out how much money you are making by doing the math. There is no escaping doing the math at some point, so you might as well become as good as you can at it. It will always work out in your benefit to be able to do your own figures.

Essay Scholarship

...only economically, but professionally as well. My goal is to teach math to the young adults in our local high schools. The scholarship would play an important part in my education by providing me with experience, knowledge and opportunities to improve myself as a teacher. My dream of becoming a teacher dates back to the days when I was a child. At school, I have always been the student who explains math to her classmates. Doing this is something that I have always enjoyed. Those experiences motivated me to pursue a career in education. Similarly, when I worked as a crew leader at McDonald’s, I taught the new employees how to perform the job. This helped to increase my desire to teach professionally. Later when I started working as a math and physics tutor at the Center for Students with Disabilities at El Paso Community College, I confirmed that teaching is something that I love to do and that I did not make a mistake when selecting my career. I obtained tremendous satisfaction in the difference my teaching made to the scholastic success of the students I tutored. In addition, I am interested in teaching as a career because I believe that as a teacher I will have the opportunity to make an impact on society. As a math teacher I will have the opportunity to develop the critical thinkers of the future. I will develop individuals who can analyze and find solutions to problems. It is my belief that if they can solve math problems, they can make a difference in the world by......

Personal Statement

...During Year 10 I was lucky enough to be taught by a new trainee Maths teacher and was inspired by the energy and enthusiasm he brought to the classroom. His commitment to ensuring we would thrive and succeed was something I deeply admired. From that point on I have always had a keen focus on a career in Maths. It is a subject I am passionate about and I would love the opportunity to share this passion with others. I have devoted a large amount of time to acquire first-hand experience in the field of teaching and Mathematics. During a placement in a secondary school I observed key stage 3 and GCSE Maths lessons. This has given me a real insight to life in the classroom and has shown me the challenges I could face. In addition I have led presentations at both Sixth form and Year 6 open days at school. My role involved demonstrating Maths challenges and helping students to complete problems. With these opportunities I have been able to share my knowledge and passion of Mathematics with others and expand their understanding, which I found very rewarding. This has given me confidence in my own abilities; not just in Maths but my level of communication with others. Through my role as a Maths tutor I gained experience giving one to one sessions with Year 11 students. I planned sessions that would help them prepare for their GCSE Maths exam, being sat at higher level and foundation. I quickly learned how important it is to differentiate work so that all levels of abilities could be...

Math 157 Reflective Paper

...decisions. As part of the two-part math course series, Math 157 is structured for grades K-8 pre-service teachers. This course comes as a continuation to the Math 156 course. The objective of the course Math 157 is to assist the learner with understanding day to day applications of Mathematics. This course can also be extended to students who find it challenging to grasp the basics of Mathematics. The curriculum for Math 157 consists of data analysis, application of geometry, application of measurements and last but not least, introduction to probability. To be more precise, the topic application of geometry involves solving problems related applications of two and three dimensional shapes. As an upcoming teacher, I believe that geometry can be found everywhere. To teach about two and three dimensional shapes in the classroom will be interesting because all around us exist two and three dimensional shapes. The chapter on measurements includes identification and application of tools, different techniques and formulas in determining measurements; and introduction to probability pertains to use of suitable statistical methods in analyzing data. The concepts that I learned in this course are very relevant in to the characteristic of a professional teacher. The information that I learned in Math 157 will help me to teach my students math. I have learned different styles and techniques for introducing students to Geometry. Taking this course has shown me more than one way to......

Having this said, it is quite obvious that math could easily be as old as humanity itself. The topic that I like the best is when our instructor teaches about the quadratic equation it is difficult but I try and pursue to understand even though it’s so difficult. I always study about this topic because I really don’t know how to solve it that’s why I research something about things and I also talk to our instructor and ask some questions about the topic that I don’t understand. I did it because I really want to learn and I want to pass this subject. I like...

Developing Mathematics Learning Skills

...Skills Introduction Mathematics skills play an important role in our lives. To understand math we must read our math books, and understand the use of technical terms like equation, integration and many more. Understanding terms is only part of learning mathematics skills. Comprehension and analysis is needed to understand math concepts. You cannot learn mathematics by being a spectator; you must perform the calculations yourself. Reading a solution in a book and watching someone else solve the problem is not sufficient, although it helps, you must use your brain to solve the problems and write out the full solution. If you are provided with the answers to a math problem or problems you may be able to see how each answer fits, but it is very different working out the problem yourself. The real understanding is if you can do the necessary work yourself or not. Mathematics Study Skills Knowing mathematical principles and concepts can help you to succeed in school and work. It is important to use study skills that apply well to math. The following are some study skills that should be utilized: * Study math everyday during the semester. * Have a specific time and place to study with few distractions. * Keep up to date with homework. * Find an alternative text when you are having trouble understanding the text. * Take notes and copy all the steps of the math problems. * Ask questions when you are confused. * Work problems until you understand......

...memories of 8th grade math. Gage felt so strongly about Ms. Hurd, as I did to my math teacher Mrs. Mowery. Gage came to America from Greece when he was just a boy. Unlike me I was born and raised in America. I think I took that for grated after reading his story. I believe a lot of children in America take for grated the educational system we have in place. When entering into Greendale Elementary school, Gage felt like he would have a bit of knowledge from his schooling in Greece. As I felt like because I had gone to 7 grades. Soon I was mistaken. Mrs. Mowery was a young, beautiful, smart math teacher. She reminded me that learning never end's. Just because I made it to the 8th grade did not mean I was done learning. Gage went to school willing to learn, I went to school to socialize with my friends. My other teacher's did not try to get me to pay attention or get good grades. I think they just thought I was a lost cause. Mrs. Mowery took that time, not just with math but with being a student. She asked me to stay after school to help me with my math. For the first week I saw this as a punishment. Day after day I stepped in to that empty classroom, sitting in the same cold, hard, metal desk. That punishment soon faded as I realized what Mrs. Mowery was trying to do. Not only did I get help with my math, I got help with finding my place in the educational system. Like Gage, I was soon under Mrs. Mowery's spell. She was so kind and patient with me. She knew I did not......

You need a lot of patience, focus and also courage. Some people doesn’t need to spend a lot of their time studying math because they were really good at it but in my case I realize that I was not really got at this subject so I need to double or even triple my time to understand more and to learn more. Math also needs time to understand. You need to spend your time and also effort to get want you want because if you work hard fot it you have the chance to get what you work hard for. It was just some of the people easily gave up on this subject. There was never been a winner on those who gave up. If you want to learn you must work for it. If you want to understand do some effort. I consider myself as a pessimistic person. I hate facing problems because I think I cannot solved it alone. I was so dependent with other persons most especially my bestfriend since my mother was gone and maybe that’s the reason why I don’t love math but now I’ve realize that life is just like a unsolved problem. Math

...Math was always the class that could never quite keep my attention in school. I was a daydreamer and a poor student and applying myself to it was pretty much out of the question. When I would pay some attention I would still forget the steps it had taken me to find the solution. So, when the next time came around I was lost. This probably came about because as a kid I wasn’t real fond of structure. I was more into abstract thought and didn’t think that life required much more than that at the time. I was not interested in things I had to write down and figure out step by step on a piece of paper. I figured I could be Tom Sawyer until about the age of seventy two. My thoughts didn’t need a rhyme or reason and didn’t need laws to keep them within any certain limits. The furthest I ever made it in school was Algebra II and I barely passed that. The reason wasn’t that I couldn’t understand math. It was more that I didn’t apply myself to the concepts of it, or the practice and study it took to get there. I was always more interested in other concepts. Concepts that were gathered by free thinkers, philosophers, idealists. Now I knew that a lot of those figures I read about tried their hand in the sciences, physics, and mathematics in their day, but I was more interested in their philosophical views on everyday life. It was not until I started reading on the subject of quantum physics and standard physics that I became interested in math. The fact that the laws of standard......

Reflective Paper Math 157

...Reflective Paper Math/157 June-22-2014 Evan Schwartz Reflective Paper The course math for elementary teachers has taught me many concepts on how to work with students and to help them achieve success in the classroom. The objective of the course Math for Elementary teachers two is to assist the learner with understanding day to day applications of mathematics, and to give different ideas on how to differentiate learning. There were several ideas covered in this course but there are several of the major mathematical concepts that stand out to me. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics principals and standards was a very big help in guiding me to understand what was required to teach specific grades based on the common core. The major mathematical concepts that are in this course are, data analysis, probability, introduction to geometry, applications of geometry, application of measurement and mathematical connections. In data analysis we used appropriate statistical methods to analyze data such as detecting patterns, developing explanations and testing hypotheses. Teaching the children how to sort the data such as using tally marks for how many people like a certain object over something else. Bar graphs, pie graphs, line graphs and pictographs. Learning data is a very important concept that the students will need for the rest of the educational career. Probability which is the measure of how likely something is was also a concept that was covered in the...

...I. Introduction This action research proposal focused on helping students cope with their math subjects. We will also discussed the possible reasons why students suffer from math phobia, math anxiety or arithmophobia, the cause and the possible result it gives to the students. First, let us give the definitions, descriptions, and symptoms of anxiety, Math anxiety and arithmophobia. Arithmophobia is simply defined as the fear of numbers. General Anxiety: * A feeling of unease, apprehension or worry. It may be associated with physical symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, feeling faint and trembling. It can be a normal reaction to stress or worry or it can sometimes be part of a bigger problem. * Anxiety is a complex combination of the feeling of fear, apprehension and worry often accompanied by physical sensations such as palpitations, chest pain and/or shortness of breath. Anxiety is often described as having cognitive, somatic, emotional, and behavioral components. The cognitive component entails expectation of a diffuse and uncertain danger. Math Anxiety: * A feeling of intense frustration or helplessness about one's ability to do math. * Math anxiety is an emotional reaction to mathematics based on a past unpleasant experience which harms future learning. * An irrational fear of mathematics that can range from a simple discomfort associated with numerical operations to a total avoidance of mathematics and mathematics classes (Mathison, 1977).......

Academic and Professional Success

...completed sections in Math, Reading and Writing in My Foundations Lab. I completed assignments in Math, Reading and Writing sections of My Foundations Lab. I started off by first doing the Reading section of the assignment first. I chose this section first since I thought it would be my stronger section. I then went on to the writing section and then last did the math section since I thought this would be my toughest section. I really enjoyed completing these assignments in the My Foundations Lab. It gave me a sense of where I was and what I needed to work on and really was a big refresher for me. I like the process it takes of letting you complete the work then identifying your weak spots then creating additional work to focus on your weak areas. My strengths were in the reading section of the course and my weakness was in the writing section. I was really surprised by the results. I thought that the math section would be my weak point. I am planning on retaking the writing section of this course to try and better myself and also complete the learning path modules. I think by doing this it will make me a stronger writer and help me with my career. I might have gotten distracted during that section and want to retry. For the Learning Path Modules I completed Writing Module: Basic Grammar. I chose this module since I had done so poorly in this section. I always remember my math teacher telling our class that we needed to take math serious because......
