Media Coverage of the Army The American public has come to know the United States Soldier and the army through the influence of the media. The American people have formulated a certain trust and support for the American Soldier at war, because of stories told by the media. This trust and support is evident as more than half the American public is against the war in Iraq and the global war on terrorism. The Soldier and the army now become in the middle of a public opinion war because of views, stories and perceptions from the media. At the same time, the media has disrespected the American Soldier by describing American fatalities in the war as milestones. The Soldier and the army must change public opinion, and rise up with an over whelming public relations campaign telling their side of the story. The media is quick to report a head line of “American Soldier shoots Iraqi civilian”. The story reveals only a statement from the dead Iraqi’s wife who said “an American shot my husband”. All the public has seen is the head line and one side of the story. The public instantly forms perceptions against the American army. The Soldier and the army automatically become the bad guys, public opinion sways against the army, and the Soldier is under investigation. Two days later an investigation concluded that the Soldier was innocent. The investigation determined the Iraqi civilian was in fact pointing an automatic rifle at the Soldier, who in turn used the proper rules of engagement and shot the civilian. The Iraqi woman who made the statement was also hiding enemy weapons inside her house.
No head line or follow up article ever appeared about the Soldier being innocent or an explanation of the whole story. The media’s biased

A 20 year-old active duty solider named, Tevin Geike, was stabbed to death last Sunday morning, October 6, by his fellow Army men, who are African-American, while walking at a block in Lakewood. The victim, who at the time was with some companions, an all-white male, were on their way back from the club at 2 a.m., to the Joint Base Lewis-McChord, after celebrating his upcoming discharge from the military. A vehicle carrying the accused suddenly stopped by, and the men in the car yelled at the victim and his friends, and began name calling and hurling racial slurs such as “cracker”. When Geike retaliated by shouting back at the group in the car, that’s when trouble started. The men in the car turned around their vehicle towards where the victim and his friends were walking, got out of the car, and after a verbal confrontation, one of them stabbed the 20-year old Army soldier. Geike’s fellow soldiers saw him fall to the ground as the suspects sped away. My research aims to evaluate both the values and drawbacks of the Pentagon’s decision to pursue embedded journalism during the war on terror in 2003. During a press conference on June 23, 1964 President Lyndon Johnson stated,” This is not a jungle war, but a struggle for freedom on every front of human activity (Lansdale, 1964, p. 78).” America felt that they were obligated to fight the war against communism in Vietnam.
