Muzzleloader Maintenance
Cleaning a muzzleloader, whether a Modern or Traditional style, is necessary in order to preserve the life of the barrel and breech areas, and also in maintaining the accuracy of your shot. The following will discuss how to disassemble, clean, and reassemble three different types of muzzleloader. There are key differences in the areas of disassembling and reassembling of the rifles, but cleaning both modern muzzleloaders and traditional muzzleloaders is similar.
Gathering Cleaning Materials
Before beginning the cleaning process for either Modern muzzleloaders or Traditional muzzleloaders, gather the supplies needed. Materials used for cleaning and preserving a muzzleloader include:
Soap and warm water, cleaning solvent, gun oil and rag, two inch cotton-cloth patches, screw driver, nipple wrench, and a ramrod from the muzzleloader (or a range rod if wanted). Other supplies for the cleaning process are: A cleaning jag, an empty milk jug, a small container to fill with cleaning solvent for soaking the nipple and breech (if applicable), an old toothbrush and some twist-ties (or special tools able to be purchased), and finally some light grease.
Please note, other materials may be necessary for a Modern Muzzleloader, such as a breech plug tool or Allen wrenches, so make sure to gather these as well if cleaning a Modern version of the Muzzleloader. This is includes everything one should need. Other materials are available depending on personal preference.

(Thompson Center Arms, 2012)

Disassembling
Once materials have been gathered, disassemble the muzzleloaders in order to ensure proper cleaning. Discussed first will be two modern muzzleloaders, followed by a traditional Hawken. Always keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction!
Disassembling the Thompson Center Encore muzzleloader
When disassembling the Encore, ensure the gun is safe with no primer in the primer pocket by opening the gun and getting a visual! Next, remove the breech plug. The breech plug of an Encore 209x50 is removed from the barrel by turning it counter-clockwise (as viewed from the breech end of the barrel) using the wrench that was supplied with the gun.” (Thompson Center Arms. 2012). Last, place the breech plug into small container of cleaning solution.
Disassembling the Knight DISC Extreme .45 Caliber
The disassembling of the DISC varies slightly from the Encore. First, remove the ramrod from the stock. Next, separate the barrel from the stock by removing a setscrew in the bottom of the stock, which is a few inches toward the end of the barrel from the trigger guard. After separating the barrel from the stock, remove the trigger assembly by unscrewing the one screw mounting this to the barrel. Then remove the bolt from the receiver. The next step is removal of the breech plug by “Inserting the combo tool (breech plug wrench side) into the receiver, engaging the breech plug (I), and turning it counterclockwise. This may require considerable force” (Knight Rifles, Inc. 2011). To finish, remove the nipple from the breech plug and place the breech plug and nipple into a small container of cleaning solution.

Disassembling the Thompson Center Hawken, as borrowed from (Thompson Center Arms Company, Inc, 2010)
First, remove the ramrod. Next, one must pull the wedge pin. (It may be necessary to tap it partially out from the other side in order to grasp the pin and pull it the rest of the way out.) Now, simply lift the end of the barrel up away from the stock and pull it forward, or away, from the lock assembly, pulling the breech plug out of the breech plug slot in the tang. Last, remove the nipple for cleaning and place into a small container of cleaning solution.

Cleaning the Muzzleloaders
Once the muzzleloaders have been disassembled, the cleaning process can begin. During this process, attach the cleaning jag to the end of the ramrod, or range rod if you so choose (some newer ramrods come with a built in cleaning jag, so no attachment is necessary). The next step is using a cleaning solvent or warm soap and water. (This is merely a preference, as some manuals are specific about using water, and some prefer solvent. Water can be harmful to the barrel if the gun is not carefully dried after the cleaning, which will produce rusting. However, solvents are corrosive if left to touch metal also. If using a solvent, make sure to thoroughly clean all solvent off of metal on the outside and inside of barrel before oiling, or solvents will eat into the metal, producing pitting). After deciding which cleaning material to use, fill a container with it. (An empty milk jug works perfectly to fill with warm, soapy water.) Grab one patch and the ramrod with a cleaning jag.
Cleaning the Hawken
First, in cleaning the Hawken, as it is a one-piece barrel and breech assembly, slide the breech/nipple end of the barrel into the milk jug filled with cleaner. Place a clean patch over the open end of the barrel and set the cleaning jag end of the ramrod over top of that. Slowly push the ramrod into the barrel, forcing the air out into the cleaning solution. Pump the ramrod up and down in the barrel, pulling the cleaner into and out of the barrel, in order to thoroughly cleanse the inside grooves of the barrel. When the barrel is clean, remove all the cleaning solution you chose by pulling the breech end of the barrel out of the solution and forcing the ramrod down into the barrel one, last time. Next, pull the ramrod out and replace the dirty patch with a clean one, and pump the ramrod in and out of the barrel several times. Repeat until you think the patch comes out dry. The next part of cleaning a Hawken is to make sure the nipple is clean. The nipple should have had plenty of time to soak by now, enabling the fouling to be easily removed from the threads and inside the nipple itself. Used the old toothbrush to clean out the threads where the nipple screws into the breech and the twist-tie to clean the tiny hole that leads from the nipple to the breech area.
Cleaning the DISC
In comparison, cleaning the Disc Extreme is similar, in how to clean, but different in which end is used. The milk jug still works for the Disc Extreme, but after removing the nipple and breech plug, the cleaning jag and patch are inserted through the breech plug area of the barrel. Once again, the process of drawing the cleaning solution into the barrel is repeated until the barrel is thought to be clean. With the breech plug removed, it is much easier to tell if the inside has gotten cleaned properly. One can simply drain the barrel, lift it toward a light and look through it. Again, when the barrel is clean, use clean patches with the cleaning jag in order to properly dry the inside and outside of the barrel. With a DISC muzzleloader, the breech plug and nipple are both removed earlier and set into cleaning solution for soaking. The nipple used in the DISC is cleaned just like the nipple used in the Hawken, cleaning the threads with the toothbrush and the inside with the twist-tie. The breech plug is cleaned with the toothbrush as well, as it will have threads running along the outside of the plug. Twist-ties or a smaller brush can be used to clean the inside of the breech, as well.
Cleaning the Encore
Cleaning of the Encore is very similar to the DISC. Upon removal of the breech, put the muzzle end of the barrel into the cleaning solution, and using the cleaning jag pre-installed on the ramrod by the factory and a clean patch, pump the ramrod up and down until the barrel is once again clean. The breech must be cleaned again, to ensure the fouling is removed much the same as with the DISC.
The barrels are now clean. Final cleanup is concluded with a small rag or paper towel, going over the outside of the barrels, stocks, trigger assemblies and trigger guards, as well as finishing up with the ramrods. After cleanup and sufficient drying time (at least one-half hour), make sure to thoroughly coat the insides of the barrels with non-corrosive gun oil, waiting until the reassembling process to oil any further.
Reassembling the Muzzleloaders Reassembling the Knight DISC Extreme .45 Caliber
To reassemble the DISC, make sure the oil rag is handy. First lightly grease the threads on the nipple and re-insert the nipple into the breech plug. Second, grease the threads on the breech plug and install the breech plug into the breech end of the barrel. Now, re-attach the bolt into the assembly, and the trigger assembly onto the barrel. Next, re-attach the barrel onto the stock with the setscrew, making sure every surface of metal is oiled well. Oil and insert the ramrod next. Finally, lightly oil the entire gun for preserving.

Reassembling the Thompson Center Encore
To reassemble the Encore, make sure the oil rag is handy. First, coat the nipple threads with grease and insert into the breech plug. Also grease the breech plug threads and insert the breech plug into the barrel. Next, wipe down the entire gun with an oil rag to preserve. Reassembling the Hawken
To reassemble the Hawken, once again, make sure the oil rag is handy. First, coat the nipple threads in grease and insert into the breech of the barrel. Next, oil the barrel underside and snap into the stock. Following this, re-insert the wedge to hold the barrel to the stock. Inserting the ramrod into the stock is the next step. To conclude the reassembly, oil the entire gun for preservation.
The muzzleloaders should be cleaned and ready to store in a low humidity, climate controlled area. Make sure to get them out and oil occasionally to ensure a good preservation. Yes, there are key differences in the areas of disassembling and reassembling of the rifles, but cleaning both modern muzzleloaders and traditional muzzleloaders is similar. Whether to use a chemical solvent or plain soap and warm water is up to the individual, but proper cleaning and preserving of a muzzleloader is imperative to accuracy of shots and lifetime of the guns. Would you like to watch the buck of a lifetime simply walk away because you chose not to properly clean your muzzleloader?

I want to go home and build a bread, read a book about building bread, take a nap while a bread is building itself. Out of the chatter someone comments on this place once being a self-sustaining community. The chatter suddenly becomes a language I almost understand. I remember Emmitsburg before US 15 bypassed the town, but brought everywhere else closer. I look 'round the room. There may be one other who remembers this place before the highway changed the way its residents live. I suspect only that person is from Emmitsburg. Everyone else, including me, is from somewhere not this place. I ask, “Is Emmitsburg officially a bedroom community?” I know the answer. The committee has been talking about solutions to such a community's problems for hours. I dread the answer because it takes away what I recall as being Emmitsburg and I'll have to think (which hurts) about what this place is becoming...

Should Pacific Jet Outsourse the Inspection

...completed much faster by technicians that perform it regularly and have all of the special equipment necessary. Taking everything into consideration I recommend that we outsource the inspection. Should Pacific Jet outsource the 72 month inspection? This is the first 72 month inspection that our 135 charter company (Pacific Jet) has coming due. Since we are a small operation with only 3 aircraft and 4 maintenance technicians performing a 72 month inspection in-house will be a huge undertaking. The main items to consider are costs, aircraft downtime, and quality control issues. We have to decide if we want to perform this inspection in-house our outsource it. The airlines have been outsourcing maintenance for decades and have accelerated this outsourcing rapidly since 2001. In 2005, some airlines outsourced as much as 62 percent of their maintenance and that number continues to grow. While they have increased their outsourcing of maintenance their accident rates have declined, statistically proving that outsourced maintenance is safe (Armstrong, 2007). There are many companies that could perform this inspection for us if we decide to outsource...

...performance. Resources include manpower, materials, tools and special equipment. Access refers to when the equipment will be prepared and accessible so that it can be worked on in safe (locked out/tagged out) condition, with necessary precautions taken, permits obtained, and any specialized documentation, drawings, or information in hand. Proper time relates to job start, duration of execution, and completion within the time frame agreed upon with the internal customer during the weekly coordination meeting. The Weekly Expectation Scheduling is the locus from which all maintenance activity is executed. Scheduling should be viewed as the “point” function and “marketing arm” of the system because it yields the earliest tangible results (often within weeks of start up). All individuals and groups perform better and accomplish more with clearly established, communicated and published expectations. When the maintenance function is managed without a weekly schedule, there are no specific expectations as to what is to be accomplished with the resources for which payroll checks will be drawn. Instead, whatever reactive demands are made is what will be done. The fundamental requirement target (the schedule) against which to control, followed by action (execution of the schedule) to achieve the target. The results, measured against the original intention (called schedule compliance), provide feedback for correcting deviations (improving future schedule compliance). Managers...

Chapter Failure prevention and recovery 19 Eurotunnel response team during one of their regular patrols in the tunnel Source: Eurotunnel Introduction One obvious way of improving operations performance is by preventing failure. Failure is rarely unimportant, but in some operations it is vital that processes do not fail. Failure in aircraft in flight, for example, or electricity supplies to hospitals, or car seat belts, or the emergency services can be literally fatal. For these operations dependability is not just desirable, it is essential. Even in less critical situations, having dependable processes can give a competitive advantage. But no process is perfect and failures will occur. So it is important that we learn from all failures and have plans in place which help them recover and minimize their effects. Failure

...The ABC’s of Failure – Getting Rid of the Noise in Your System For the past 40 years, I have observed many companies, including DuPont (where I spent 27 years) pursuing planned maintenance with the standard tools of planned maintenance: inspections, planning, scheduling, materials procurement, CMMS systems, etc. with the same results. They succeed for a while and get their percent planned and scheduled maintenance up to the 80+ only to see that drop back later to 60 I am amazed how many of the companies we work with have had this experience. This pattern of behavior has led us to conclude that the reason for this experience is that only 60% of the normal work of maintenance is inherently plannable. The rest of the work is created by random acts of what we are now calling care-lessness. The sites where we see people break this pattern and achieve 92% to 96% planned maintenance for the long term without regressing, are the ones who eliminate the inherently unplannable work. Of course, this cannot be done by maintenance alone. Everyone who does work at a site contributes to the defects that create the unplannable work, and therefore everyone must participate in eliminating the defects that create the 40% of the work that is unplannable. In the diagram below we attempt to more clearly articulate the true significance of Defect Elimination by outlining the ABC’s of failure. Fundamentally, failures happen because things that exist are not perfect. To reduce failures we must eliminate...

The goal of the TPM program is to markedly increase production while, at the same time, increasing employee morale and job satisfaction. The TPM program closely resembles the popular Total Quality Management (TQM) program. Many of the same tools such as employee empowerment, benchmarking, documentation, etc. are used to implement and optimize TPM. This paper will define TPM in some detail, evaluate its strengths and weaknesses as a maintenance philosophy, and discuss implementation procedures. Examples of successfully implemented programs will be presented. I. What is Total Productive Maintenance? Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is a maintenance program concept. Philosophically, TPM resembles Total Quality Management (TQM) in several aspects, such as (1)total commitment to the program by upper level management is required, (2) employees must be empowered to initiate corrective action, and (3) a long range outlook must be accepted as TPM may take a year or more to implement and is an on-going...

Condition Based Maintenance vs. Phase Based Maintenance

...EXECUTIVE SUMMARY There is an increasing desire for the implementation of condition based maintenance programs to replace the traditional hour based maintenance on Military rotor wing aircraft. There are several advantages and disadvantages to this type of maintenance. The purpose of this paper is to discuss both and the affect that they play in regards to the organizational behavior of a business. There are distinct advantages in regards to cost when we talk about condition based maintenance. Replacing a part only when it is likely to fail saves the cost of replacement at a possible earlier time like in a phase based program, or catching a part that might have failed prior to the required hour inspection or replacement time. But this new technology comes with a cost. A cost, not only monetary, but also within the organizational behavior of a corporation or organization such as the military. When we talk about Managing change and stress, we have to talk about the external forces of change effecting these technological advancements. The technology of condition based maintenance is justified through the savings it generates through the maintenance program but what cost will it have on the people working on these aircraft? Will there be a reduction in jobs? This concern can start trouble, rumors, and decreased production from employees that normally work hard. What effect will it have on the organizational design? Will there be an increase or decrease in managerial roles? Will there...

...happens when it does and what can we do about it? Equipment’s fails because certain parts of it fail first and that prevents the whole process from working. It is important to understand the problem before any maintenance. There are a lot of reasons it could fail because of the age of the equipment and parts need to be changed or if the equipment vibrates nuts and bolts can be loosen and parts can fall apart. When this happens the machine needs to be stopped and maintained. Age is very important if the machine has been used for a very long time the efficiency and the quality wouldn’t be as good as a new one, a machine has a certain life span for example on a car the timing belt must be replaced after every 50,000 miles. Wear could lead to a fault in a machine because parts come into contact with each other for example a cars break pad. Corrosion in certain materials takes longer than others like aluminium, when a part of a machine corrodes it degrade and can cause failures. Raw materials such as oil and compressed air can run equipment’s. If something different unwanted to the equipment is in it, it can affect the way the machine works. For example water in a petrol tank will cause a car to break down and this is a fouling. Lack of maintenance can cause a fail, routine maintenance such as cleaning and lubrication. This cause for example in a factory that is manufacturing can will stop the line and check the cars in that line to see if the problem is in other cars. This will cost a lot...
