She was taken to the Hidatsa’s village in what today is North Dakota. After that she was sold to a French-Canadian fur trapper named Toussaint Charbonneau who turned her into his second wife. It was later, when Sacajawea was pregnant with their first son that the Corps of Discovery arrived near the village. Captains Lewis and Clark interviewed several trappers in search of someone who could guide them and be an interpreter. They hired Charbonneau as interpreter because Sacajawea spoke Shoshone and it would be useful. And Sacajawea became more than an interpreter.
