Personal Statement: Improving My Leadership

I am not a vocal leader, I don’t like to lead whenever I don’t know what’s ahead, because I don’t want to lead people to make mistakes, the only time I will be happy leading is when I know exactly what is happening, but I do sometimes take initiative to help others even people I strongly dislike sometimes, I don’t like to teach people just because it seems so easy to me and then they need every step plus where it’s at. Whenever I’m not with friends I don’t like to talk to anybody and I rarely talk to anyone else even then, Even playing sports when normal people will call for the ball I’ll just clap to get the attention. Everyone always needs to improve everything because it’s human nature, but most importantly I need to improve my leadership

Coach Ken Carter: High School Basketball Team

...goals and aspirations. B. VISION AND VALUES Vision: Coach Carter, vision was to effect a change in the life of his college basketball team by making his team an academic and sport success, which will give them an ample opportunity to be successful in life, rather than drop out of school because they are unable to make a college grade he want them to have an opportunity to choose between sports and academics which gives them a better chance to be a better person in life, he has a dream of breaking the cycle that expected the young players to fail in life, he desired more for them beyond winning high school basketball matches. I will call Coach carter a Transformational leader because rather than basically improving the basketball team results, he went further in improving the boys lives, through motivation, hard work, discipline and finally showing the boys the path to thread to be successful men. His vision was a major influence which contributed to his acceptance of the job at Richmond Values: The movie showed a lot of values which are: Discipline: it was obvious that the team was highly in disciplined with players passing insult on him by walking out during training session, he instilled discipline in the team by disciplining any act of indiscipline with "suicides" and/or "push-ups" punishment and with an option of leaving the team if they are indisposed to doing it his own way. World changer can have different meanings to many different people. The one definition that I related to personally was actually a quote from President Abraham Lincoln “ By serving others and putting others’ needs before oneself, only then can anyone truly impact the world with change.” - Abraham Lincoln (World- Changers for Resources. (2008).. the other important definition of world changer began in 1999 for my school, Indiana Wesleyan College, as a new initiative both to students and faculty and is now included in our mission statement as a commitment...

Nsw Values

...Student’s Name Instructor’s Name Course Date Reflection Portfolio on Personal Values and NSW Health Values Introduction Values are important in any organization. Values give an organization credibility in the eyes of its clients. Promotion of ethical values is a role of every stakeholder of the organization. At New South Wales (NSW) Health and private employers ensure promotion of value through adherence to their value statements. This reflection portfolio evaluates the said values assuming that one works within that organization. In order to perform this reflection, one has to make sure that personal values are not compromised by the employer. Compromise may hinder independent comparison of one’s personal values and those of NSW Health. This work will analyze the influence of these values on health teams and demonstrate how NSW Health leaders may use these values to impact effectively on patient’s healthcare. An independent evaluator needs to follow the criteria that ensure professional practice. I adopted my values in a collage characterized by strong family bondage and commitment, sharing, love, happiness and family pets. This collage values happiness, wealth and family bondage than other matters in life. I express my vision for a happy family, values and goals to measure progress. My vision aims to ensure family safety, health and togetherness. In order to have a happy family, one must attend to all their needs including...

Organizational Leadership

...Organizational Development and Leadership Final Essay Leadership is defined not only by its obvious characteristics, it is also a more underlying charisma that is a motivating factor for those who follow a leader on a deep personal and emotional level. The ability to lead is an enviable skill that some are born with and some acquire and fine tune through the span of a life time. Simply because a persona is a leader, does that make them a worthy manager? What really identifies a person as a leader? There is an overwhelming amount of information available on the topic of leadership. Although leadership is a learnable skill, it takes practice to continue learning and growing in one’s role. Leaders can have both a positive and negative impact on those who are following, “an implicit lesson for leaders is the value of being conscious of what influence tactics one uses and what effects are typically associated with each tactic. … Leaders should pay attention not only to the actual influence tactics they use but also to why they believe such method is called for.” (Hughes, Richard, & Curphy, 2012) The influence that a leader can have on another is that of power. It is the potential to influence the behaviors used by one person to modify the attitudes, behaviors and possibly even beliefs of another. Being a leader sometimes requires one to step up and be courageous in making decisions, “leaders face dilemmas that require choices between competing sets of values and priorities...

Servant Leadership

...Gilmore Dr. Wright L. Lassiter, Jr. Leadership in Management-MANA 6310 4 December 2014 A Servant Leadership Perspective with Hosni A. Nabi, Ph.D. Understanding servant leadership, its values, developmental experiences needed, and perspective became complete to me as I had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Hosni Nabi. Having established a strong relationship with Dr. Nabi over the past five years as my neighbor, friend, and confidant for business and professional advice, he became the ideal choice for preparing a servant leadership profile. He has vested over a 40 year career in education transitioning over time from a Scientist to Chief Academic Officer of Cape Cod Community College to President of Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. Dr. Nabi’s discussions with me always resonate, as I recognize the value he has placed on human beings, education, and improving people’s lives and the communities we all live within. His ability to motivate, inspire, and encourage is the reason I have returned to school for my MBA. It is characteristics and values he exemplifies that define him as a servant leader for this interview. As a student, I discussed with Dr. Nabi our focus in class in terms of servant leadership, its characteristics, along with my assignment to identify a servant leader as himself. As I mentioned in the introduction, several characteristics validate Dr. Nabi as a servant leader. In his personal view, servant leadership is being able to improve the lives...

...and labor) have hit the organization hard. The employees’ morale is at a low and Classic’s financial strain the corporate culture is under pressure. The board of directors for Classic Airlines has mandated a 15% cost reduction over the next 18 months. This cost reduction brings some challenges for all departments including finance, human resources, marketing, and customer service. From a marketing point of view, Classic is challenged with increasing customer loyalty and satisfaction, while decreasing expenditures. The first step of the problem-solving method is a key question to ask, “Is all the things competing for your attention, which you will deal with at this time?” There are competing issues and all involved parties have a personal vested interest. In Classic Airlines case, decreasing sales impacts the customer’s satisfaction and loyalty; lower employee morale and cutting costs are all examples of the competing issues. Nursing Manager Role

...concern; and future projections. Based on the informed understanding of the nurse manager role new insights, personal strengths, and personal challenges that are envisioned for a nurse assimilating to this role will be provided. Introduction Leadership is an integral part of nursing. Grossman and Valiga suggest that leadership is not necessarily tied to a position of authority (Grossman & Valiga, 2005, p. 4). Also suggested by Grossman and Valiga, is that each professional nurse has the potential and the responsibility to provide leadership in each of our individual areas of practice, institutions, professional organizations, communities, and our profession as a whole (Grossman & Valiga, 2005, p. 4). Leadership is a course in undergraduate education and nurses in any role are leaders in many capacities. The purpose of this paper is to look at the nurse manager role: historical development, educational preparation, skill requirements, value requirements, role options, concerns, future projections, and my perspective. Historical Development of Nurse Manager Role The first nursing leader was Florence Nightingale and leadership was implicitly discussed in the scope and standards of nursing prior to 1996 revision when leadership appeared as an explicit standard. American Nurses Association (ANA) standard 15 states: “The registered nurse provides leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession” (American Nurses...

...Louis University Personal Statement When asked why I think a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Saint Louis University is right for me I like to think of myself as a rope that has been pulled back and forth by two different ends. Although this seems to have a negative connotation at first it has actually been a necessary process that now has provided me with clear goals for my future. The individuals pulling the opposite ends of the rope were my parents. My father is the Vice President of Taxes for a fortune 500 company and my mother is a bariatric dietitian that also runs her own health and wellness business. It was almost a movie scene in which my dad rested on one shoulder and my mom on the other. My dad would always say “Mike there will always be jobs in business, especially accounting” while my mom always persuaded me to do what I was truly passionate about and reminded me that the money would fall into place. Although my passion for personal fitness was growing rapidly as I finished up my days in high school athletics I still decided to take the “safe” route of accounting. While I had success in my introductory business classes after the semester ended I decided to focus on what I’m truly passionate about and changed my degree to nutrition and fitness. One aspect of my life stayed consistent while I was trying to figure out my academic path, my involvement in Kappa Alpha Order. I joined this fraternity as a freshman and held multiple leadership positions that...

...D03454209 | LSI Style Interpretation | Leadership and Organizational Behavior | GM5910N_HProfessor Kenneth Goldsmith | Robert Neal White | 8/31/2011 | | After finishing the LSI Style Interpretation for this class I was identified as have the humanistic- encouraging style as my top style with a score of 38 which placed me in the top 93 percent of persons who took the interpretation. My second top style was the affiliative style in which I scored 37 and placed in the top 90 percent of persons who took the interpretation. After contemplating my work / leadership style(s) and comparing how I interact with co- workers and subordinates, I agree with the results and will further discuss my reasoning in this paper. First, I will discuss the humanistic- encouraging style. As depicted on the description of the humanistic- encouraging style, scoring high on the humanistic – encouraging scale is “positive, healthy and effective”. (International, 2011) The high score shows that I am “sensitive to people’s needs, and will devote energy to counseling and coaching others”. (International, 2011) The scale itself measures the takers interest in people and the tendency to care about others. It also measures the takers ability to encourage others to improve. As stated on the description, since I scored as high as I did I should “ have an unconditional positive regard for others”. (International, 2011). I completely agree with the results of the survey and am confident...

An Effective Leader

...born leaders, many more have honed their leadership skills through extensive practice (Hill, 2009, p. 1).” I, personally, agree with that statement. I think that some leaders are born that way, but most people that are leaders are trained and taught to be that way. Leadership success always starts with vision. Effective leaders periodically take stock of their personal strengths and shortcomings. They ask: “What do I like to do? What am I really good at?” “What are my areas of weakness, and what do I dislike doing?” ("Three Fundamentals," 2009). Knowing your areas of weakness does not make you weak; on the contrary, it allows you to delegate to others who have those abilities, in order to achieve the common goal. Rather than clinging to the false belief that they can do it all, great leaders hire people who complement, rather than supplement, their skills. Working on your areas of weaknesses will improve your leadership ability – and recognizing them makes you more human. Effective leaders lead by example and merely invite others to come along with them (Kerfoot, 2012). Keeping promises is another sign of effective leadership. They believe in others and never fail to reward or compliment someone when they see they are doing well. Effective leaders admit when they are wrong and admit when they make mistakes. Everyone is human and makes a mistake at one time or another. It’s how a person handles a mistake that gives them a certain leadership quality. An effective leader can admit...

Assignment 1 Bus508

...Entrepreneurial Leadership BUS508 Assignment 1 Dr. Janet Durgin 1.) Discuss the common elements described in the theories/philosophies of Case, Kouzes, and Drucker including how their principles/strategies relate to the new definition of entrepreneurial leadership presented in Understanding Entrepreneurial Leadership in today’s Dynamic Markets. Both cases Kouzes and Drucker both agree that the leader must have a very intense passion to succeed. The two authors description of the desire needed by leaders is passion which is a deeply intense desire to succeed and strive to make the business grow. It was stated a leader must possess passion for the business, which gives them drive to want to plan and accomplish goals. Kouzes makes similar statements, he says that a leader can motivate others by aspiring to share their goals, encouraging others under them they can obtain the same success and accomplish many goals. Drucker’s thoughts were very similar to Case and Kouzes, along the lines of being effective it requires extreme discipline of effort and passion for anyone gaining success focusing on their goals. The theories of all three gentlemen are share similar thoughts and agreements on leadership being ready to take charge and lead in spite of discouraging or opposing others to be passionate about their positions, jobs or business. Kouzes mentions the leaders should challenge the process by searching for opportunities to grow and improve 2.) Discuss your leadership style or...

Leadership Practice and Theory

...creative leadership questionnaire sets out to measure management and leadership skills and the style by asking behavioral and situational questions of different aspects in management and leadership. These behaviors are called competencies. According to the report, “competencies are sets of behaviors or behavioural repertoires encompassing skills, knowledge, abilities, and personal attributes.” As I was reading the questions, I did my best to answer them honestly so I can get the most accurate results possible. This is what I have learned. The most important thing that I have learned and which is also stated in the ‘Introduction” section is that, “Psychological test do not measure the whole you which is why they need to be interpreted in the context of other information about you.” With that in mind, I have reviewed and analyzed the report to see if it truly reflects my current management and leadership styles and behaviors. In the section titled, “Leadership Level,” my scores ranged from 5 to 8 with the average score of 6 on the CLQ key factor scale. This indicated that based on my responses, I’m just as effective as the average manager. The CLQ report suggested that I need to improve my management competencies and skills to have a competitive edge which will prepare me for more challenging management and leadership positions. I absolutely agree with this finding. Currently as a personal banker, I lack the ability to grow and improve my management skills because my current...
