Creativity Reflection
“Globally creativity and the creative industries are the success stories of the new century. Creativity once considered to be the work of God, or laterally to be a work of God-like artistgenius, has been democratized” (Bilton C. 2007). Today everyone aspires to be creative, so do managers. These were my thoughts about creativity and its position in the world when I was just starting this fascinating module. It's a shame that now I can't exactly state what I was expecting from this module at that particular moment in time, but I can definitely say that since than my knowledge and experience in this area has widened dramatically. First of all I was really surprised by the way the module had been run and was captivated by it. An enormous number of tasks have been given to us throughout the course, some of which were really challenging for those who couldn't get away from their comfort zones. Teaching through playing and engaging is a very helpful tool which I think has never been used before within the walls of our university, and this gave us all an unforgettable experience. Secondly during our learning we had a new visiting lecturer every week who gave us his own view and perspective on creativity based on his knowledge and work experience. As I’ve mentioned in my essay most of the lecturers had their own subjective views, however there were some really common obvious features. And at this point the world wide phenomenon of creativity opened to us from a whole new range of perspectives. Before we started this module I had some background knowledge of creativity and new that it had been widely studied in sociology, management and accounting and I was aware of the definition of creativity made by Amabile (1997) that creativity is “the production of novel, appropriate ideas in any realm of human activity from science, to the arts, to education, to business or to everyday life”. However I always thought that management perspective on creativity would be more monetary i.e. it would be concerned mostly with how creativity enhances the process of making money or entrepreneurship. On the other hand, from psychological perspective I expected to see a more vague view on creativity, concerning its effects on the society and individuals. But I was wrong, as the actual definitions are vice-versa. Management definitions refer to creativity as two principal aspects: novelty or difference, and that creative individual to be given freedom. Whereas psychological definitions offer two separate components: first one is something like novelty or innovation, second one is different and it states that in order to be creative, the idea must also be useful or valuable, or as psychological tests say: must have ‘fitness for purpose’ (Bilton 2007). And this is what has puzzled me the most. As concerning other disciplines like arts, advertising, drama, film making and accounting everything was more or less obvious and of common sense: artists and poets were thought of being creative people since ancient time (ancient Greeks even had their definition of being creative, which I’ve included in my essay). Summing up, by the end of this module I’ve had a clear understanding that creativity is a true interdisciplinary phenomenon, and I have seen many new forms of creativity which I have never even dreamt of. Moreover the contradiction of actual definitions from management and

psychological perspectives to my view of them, suggested the high degree of integration of creativity within different perspectives and perspective’s intersection with each other. However what stays uncertain to me is how we can actually measure creativity? And whether creativity is a genetic heredity, meaning that you can only be born creative, or it is a quality that you can acquire during your life and can actually become creative? Moreover is creativity to do with outcomes, or with qualities and processes such as imagination, originality and fluency? So I think that answering these questions, supported by the development of the ideas covered throughout this module are my next steps in developing Creativity awareness, skills and knowledge. ...The Philips Arena Brandon Rabon One of my favorite events was when I went to the Philips Arena to watch the Hawks and the Heat play. My friend and I went on a trip to Atlanta to go see our first NBA game. This was very exciting to go watch the most exciting team in the NBA play. We really didn’t know what to expect but assumed it would be like any other venue just like the Colonial Life Arena. The drive there was nice and it was pretty easy to spot the venue in the middle of the city. Parking was a different story all together. It took us probably 30 minutes to try to find a spot. They had a few police officers trying to direct traffic but there could have been more. We ended up having to parking like three or four blocks away from the venue and just walked there. They could have improved parking by using some of the parking garages around the venue. While we were walking back I saw at least two or three garages that were not being used and just shut down for the night. Arriving to the venue, the size of the Philips Arena was amazing. They haven’t opened the doors yet so there were a lot of people waiting to get in and seated. The crowd management up to this point is handled well because everyone got into lines fairly quickly once the doors opened. The tickets were scanned easy and quickly to get everyone in.
