...Running head: Charter schools vs. Public schools Charter vs. Public Schools Stan Rodrigues Warner Pacific College Abstract I have chosen to write about the differences between charter schools and the public education system. I have been working in the education field for the last eight years. I personally grew up attending private schools until halfway through my freshman year when my parents moved me to Oregon, at which point I began public high school. I immediately began to notice differences. Private schools taught at a higher education level. There was no basic level of education there was only college prep or honors. At Redmond High School there was general education, college prep, then honors. I noticed that it seemed like they were more concerned about moving you on and out of the high school than actually knowing whether you learned anything or was prepared to deal with the outside world. I felt more like a number than an attending student. This exact feeling brings me to where I am now. I have kids and I am not so sure that they are getting the best education possible. My older son had learning disabilities and has been through several programs prior to the fifth grade. He had a teacher who was willing to give him extra attention and all of a sudden by the end of the year he was at level in many areas. He is now in high school and although struggles sometimes he has a great GPA and is proceeding on a college course. I have wondered many times if he really had...

The Geography of Los Angeles' Public School System

...The Geography of Los Angeles’ Public School System When discussing Los Angeles, most people think of its enormous wealth: Hollywood, movie stars, bikinis, Lamborghinis, and multi-million dollar homes. However, Los Angeles is a city of extremes, and the wealth is even more pronounced when compared to the city’s poverty. In all aspects of life, there is a disparity between the very rich and the very poor. This disparity is most apparent in our public schools. While some public schools in Los Angeles are exceptional and score highly on AP and SAT exams, others are far below California’s target API (Academic Performance Index) score. The quality of public education in certain areas of Los Angeles is, in part, due to specific geographic factors that create such extremes in LA’s public school system. While Los Angeles is a very unusual city, there are two easily identifiable Central Business Districts: Downtown and the Port of LA. Before the Industrial Revolution and fast land travel, the wealthiest and most important people in the city lived as close to the center as possible because it was the heart of business and commerce. After the Industrial Revolution, city centers became much less desirable to live in because of pollution and noise, and the most powerful people began to move towards the suburbs, away from the CBD’s. However, in Los Angeles these people did not move away in all directions; they moved west, towards the ocean and natural beauty. Conversely, the city’s poor...

Sociology

...In 1954, Brown v. Board of Education was a landmark Supreme Court case that would end public school segregation. Over fifty years later, studies have shown segregation has increased in the public school system. Currently, public schools have seen an escalation in segregation according to a report released by Richard Rothstein of the nonprofit Economic Policy Institute (Strauss, 2013). Three additional reports related to public school segregation have also been released. This increase in segregation could have detrimental effects on the U.S. multiracial society’s success (Strauss, 2013). The study conducted by Richard Rothstein was conducted in 2012 and has now received both international and national media attention. Segregation is defined as “separation of racial or ethnic groups in order for the dominate group to maintain social distance” (Henslin, 2011). In this case the dominant group is white students. A dominate group is defined as “a group with power regardless of the numbers associated with the group” (Henslin, 2011). Segregation has been growing based on both race and poverty. “Fifteen percent of black students and fourteen percent of Latino students attend “apartheid schools” across the nation in which whites make up zero to one percent of the enrollment” (Strauss, 2013). Previous studies conducted in the 1970s have shown four out of five students in the U.S. were white. Now in particular areas (South and West) students of color are the predominate race...

Culturally Responsive Classroom Management In Schools

...Within this theme is the way teachers manage their classrooms and students, or lack there of. Also, how they interacted with students, especially those who needed more attention. The lack of classroom management was mostly prevalent in the middle and high school classes. In both the middle school and high school classes, teachers attempted to get students to settle down with the counting down from five method. This proved ineffective as the students continued to talk over the teacher every time they did this. This method most likely would’ve worked on much younger kids, but it proved ineffective with the older kids. In addition to that, in all of these instances the teachers were white while over half of the class was comprised of ethnic minorities. This reflected the demographics of both the public high school and the charter school. In both of these schools over 75% of the students are ethnic minorities. In these instances the teachers could’ve employed culturally responsive classroom management (Bondy, Ross & Gallingane, 2007). Culturally responsive classroom management applies aspects of culturally responsive pedagogy, specifically to classroom management strategies. Within CRCM, one of the most important parts is setting expectations for the classroom, and what happens when those expectations...

This I Believe Essay

...Grading 'Waiting for Superman' Dana Goldstein | September 23, 2010 Here's what you see in Waiting for Superman, the new documentary that celebrates the charter school movement while blaming teachers unions for much of what ails American education: working- and middle-class parents desperate to get their charming, healthy, well-behaved children into successful public charter schools. Here's what you don't see: the four out of five charters that are no better, on average, than traditional neighborhood public schools (and are sometimes much worse); charter school teachers, like those at the Green Dot schools in Los Angeles, who are unionized and like it that way; and noncharter neighborhood public schools, like PS 83 in East Harlem and the George Hall Elementary School in Mobile, Alabama, that are nationally recognized for successfully educating poor children. You don't see teen moms, households without an adult English speaker or headed by a drug addict, or any of the millions of children who never have a chance to enter a charter school lottery (or get help with their homework or a nice breakfast) because adults simply aren't engaged in their education. These children, of course, are often the ones who are most difficult to educate, and the ones neighborhood public schools can't turn away. You also don't learn that in the Finnish education system, much cited in the film as the best in the world, teachers are—gasp!—unionized and granted tenure, and families benefit from a...

Personality Characteristics

...Personality Characteristics Saundra Moskoff PSYCH 504 November 21, 2011 Angela J.W. Steele, Psy. D. Personality Characteristics People differ from one another not only in physical appearance but also psychologically. An individual’s persona is a mixture of life span experiences in addition to genetic characteristics (Cervone & Pervin, 2010). Saundra Moskoff focused on three personality traits: self-esteem, autonomy, and sociability, and examined how the characteristics developed during her childhood through family and social relations, and education. Self-Esteem Self-esteem is a general evaluation of one’s worth as a person and according to Uszyńska-Jarmoc, (2007), takes the form of a desire to improve, guard, and defend the self, and has an important influence on a child’s behavior. Early Development Saundra Moskoff, née Johnson, was born in 1968, a time in the United States fraught with racial unrest and violence. As an African American child, she was aware of the differences in the people she watched on TV, and saw in the books she enjoyed. Saundra’s parents exposed her to positive images of female African Americans such as writer May Angelou and performer Sheila Frazier. In addition to an African American inheritance, Saundra inherited the height of her tall Osage ancestors, and was much taller than her peers were. By the time Saundra was age 5, she was almost four-feet tall. Saundra found being tall more unbearable than being an African American. Her parents...
