How to Drive a Standard

...ENGL 1301 Yochim 21 September 2014 How to Drive a Standard Most cars sold today have an automatic transmission, which means that the car shifts gears automatically. Most people over the age of 16 know how to drive automatics, but the real challenge comes when those people are tasked with driving a standard, or a car that doesn’t shift gears on its own. Learning how to drive a standard can be difficult, but with practice and the correct procedure, it can be done. When someone refers to a manual, standard, or stick shift, they are talking about a car that has a clutch pedal and a gear shift that has gears one through five instead of park, neutral, reverse, drive, and first and second gear. Before even attempting to drive a standard, you should research the topic. It is a good idea to broaden your knowledge about standards before even attempting to drive them because it gives you a better idea of the process. Youtube videos or verbal directions can help you understand what the clutch is actually doing and why shifting needs to be done at a certain time. Articles can also provide pictures that deepen the understanding of what the transmission is actually doing. Sitting in the passenger side while a family member or friend drives is also very beneficial because it gives you a real world demonstration of how to drive a standard. However, nothing is more valuable in your journey to learning how to drive stick than actual hands-on while in the driver’s seat. The second step......

Credit Where Due

...Credit Where Credit is Due As a doctoral student, you’ll be spending enormous amounts of time reading, analyzing, and critiquing the work of scholars and researchers in your field. As you write about the ideas and research of others, you need to give credit where credit is due. That is, you need to be scrupulously clear when an idea, sentence, or phrase that you use is something you have read in the work of other scholars and not something you composed yourself. Before you dive into reading and analyzing research we want to ensure that you have the skills to ensure academic integrity in your work and give credit where credit is due.  Many people think of plagiarism as simply copying the work of others and not giving credit (that is, not citing where the idea came from), but the most common Academic Integrity violation at Northcentral is related to improper paraphrasing (that is copying the work of others nearly word-for-word, or simply rearranging their words, even when you give credit to the source). To paraphrase correctly, you need to carefully read the material, think about it, and then express the idea in your own words. In this week, you will learn more about Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy, how Northcentral deals with Academic Integrity violations, and what you can do to avoid all forms of plagiarism, intentional and unintentional. As a bonus, you’ll also consider the firsthand accounts of the professional development of two innovative and......

Writing a Research Proposal

...Writing a Research Proposal The Proposal A research proposal is the presentation of an idea that you wish to pursue. A good research proposal presumes that you have already thought about your project and have devoted some time and effort in gathering information, reading, and then organizing your thoughts. A research proposal is NOT a project to be thrown together in one night with ideas off the top of your head. Thus, one might say that the research proposal is a second step, following the selection of a broad topic. The actual proposal will indicate what analytical question you wish to address. The foundation of a good research paper is a good research question. Just a tree needs a good root system to grow to be strong, a good research paper needs a good analytical question. What does "analytical" mean? An analytical question can take different forms and no one form is necessarily better than others. What all analytical questions have in common is the fact that they are not merely descriptive. That is, an analytical question moves beyond the "what" and explores the "how," and the "why." A good analytical research paper will use "the what" as part of the answer to "the why." But it is obligatory to address a question beyond the "what." For example, a descriptive paper would ask: "What was Gorbachev's economic perestroika policies?" An analytical paper would ask: "Why did Gorbachev's economic perestroika policies fail?" As part of the paper, you would then review what the...
