Prior to starting this position in the Service Learning Center program, my expectations were a little different. I expected this program to be strictly about helping young children develop good academic skills. Most importantly by helping them with homework and teaching them information, related to their assignments, that they did not understand. I expected to interact with kids strictly academically and maybe and few games from time to time so that the students can be enthused about learning and actually remember the information that they are learning. I expected this to be a very smooth learning and fun process for not only the children but me as well. What I actually experienced was a little different. The students had so much enthusiasm that they didn’t even wants to sit down to complete their homework assignments. Some of them were difficult to work with. ...Service Learning Reflection During my experiences with service leaning included: painting a bathroom, cleaning inside and outside of houses, and helping coach basketball. With each of these experiences I learned new things about what I was doing and learned new things about myself. As I went to each of these situations I was nervous as to what was expected of us. When helping at the Crittenton Center she was ready for our group and everything planned out as to what each person would do. My group of three was to paint a small bathroom. ...The free health camp required voluntary and effective people’s participation to render its services. I volunteered in the camp and helped as much as I could. My participation in the health camp was useful enough to aid at least a few people. From managing the crowd to helping the ills, I contributed as much as I could. ...The two readings this week discusses the importance of examining the limitations of service learning and the need to be critical of the services provided by student. Morton criticises the widely used Starfish Hurling story where a young individual attempts to help washed up starfishes. He considers it a miseducative analogy that simplifies the intricacies of human agency or in this case the starfish, who has no voice or say in the matter of being hurled back into the sea. In conclusion, Morton finds more merit in community service and communication between the parties involved, than individual acts of kindness without dialogue between service recipients and providers.
