Service Learning Reflection Essay

As a prerequisite for a prerequisite it was required of us to achieve ten hours of service learning time, how boring could this be I figured, but what they failed to mention was how much fun we would and could have while achieving that goal. The first experience I was involved with was the “I Have a Dream” program at Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School in Overtown. As I can recall it was raining that day, so we didn’t get a chance to do any outdoor activities that was planned, which was upsetting. On the other hand, it was okay because we got an opportunity to interact with the kids a little while longer, which I know they enjoyed. In attendance with us was Professor Gonzalez who had a goat skin drum and a mallet which he used to get the kids’ attention at times and the volunteers as well. I still have a headache to this day because of how loud it was. He also went on to speak about the seedlings that they planted the year before and told a short story, which the kids obviously didn’t like. Also with us was Professor Salinas who went through a series of “brain busters” with the kids, mostly mental math problems and riddles, which to this day I’m still trying to figure out. Well mostly the riddles of course. However, I was amazed by the fact that the kids actually enjoyed us being there, I thought they were going to be a lot more apprehensive towards us but that wasn’t the case. I also realized the situation of the kids and felt sorry for them, not because they seem to be poor or under-privileged, but the mere fact they were being denied the resources to get a great education because of the area they reside or go to school in, and they seemed to be interested in receiving a good education. I expected this program to be strictly about helping young children develop good academic skills. ...Service Learning Reflection During my experiences with service leaning included: painting a bathroom, cleaning inside and outside of houses, and helping coach basketball. With each of these experiences I learned new things about what I was doing and learned new things about myself. As I went to each of these situations I was nervous as to what was expected of us. ...The free health camp required voluntary and effective people’s participation to render its services. I volunteered in the camp and helped as much as I could. Morton criticises the widely used Starfish Hurling story where a young individual attempts to help washed up starfishes.
