In the self-improvement book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, author Stephen R. Covey presents an integrated and principle-centered approach for solving personal and professional issues and problems. Covey uses real life examples as well as his own experience to reveal a systematic way for living with integrity, honesty, and self-respect. In the book, he explains principles that give someone the comfort to adapt to change and the wisdom to take control and full advantage of the opportunities that the business world and personal lives create. This book seems very useful and I found a few habits that I plan to adopt and work at including in my everyday life. They are basic things in everyday life that can make things easier, more efficient, and better for everyone not just myself. They do not necessarily need to be used every second of my day but if I can employ them as often as possible, I can improve myself. Seventh habit is one of them it is about personal renewal, bringing your greatest asset back into top operating condition. What asset is that? You are the common denominator of every aspect of your life. The seven habit is about one of renewal and continual improvement that is of building one's personal capability. To be effective, one must find the proper balance between actually doing and improving one's capability to do that which you value.In the business environment, synergy occurs when two or more businesses or resources come together to make a greater impact than they would separately. In his "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," author Stephen R. Covey lists synergy as one of them and notes, "two heads are better than one." As a small business owner, you can use synergy in your workplace to enhance your business. I strongly agree with his statement. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” This quote belonging to none other than Aristotle, the ancient Greek philosopher really summarizes in a nutshell what the author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People wanted to convey to its readers. Dr, Stephen R. Covey, the author of this book tries to illustrate that our character is fundamentally a combination of our habits; either good ones or bad ones. Habits become consistent and because of such consistency, they often become an unconscious pattern, which causes our character to be manifested and creates our effectiveness or ineffectiveness. Since no one is born effective, it is great to know these habits can be learned. They obviously are not quick fixes, because anything that comes easy goes away just as easy. These habits take time and are a journey of constant self-analysis and tweaking those things that we know shouldn’t be a part of the process. The good thing is we don’t have to figure it out all alone. Before starting to read the book, I thought I was going to find myself with one of those books with difficult concepts to understand and to relate with, however, from the beginning of the begging of the book I was able to connect myself to the author’s ideas. Reading about what the author and his wife were going through while they were raising their son was helpful to me, as Covey tells us, his book was inspired by a familiar crisis he and his wife were going through as they were raising their child. Their child was having a hard time keeping up academically and socially. The child was falling behind his classmates in most respects. The first thing the author, Covey and his wife, Sandra tried to do was to motivate his son, to reach such goal they employed phrases such as “that’s good son” “keep it up” however, Covey, soon realized that they were employing the wrong strategy, what they were doing wasn’t in harmony with the way they perceived their son. Consequently, they started to change themselves, they decided to focus on themselves rather than on their son, they gave up the idea of wanting to change their child, rather, they decided to start valuing their son’s uniqueness. Aflague University of Guam BA 240 29 Nov 2015 A Life Application Before even reading the book “The 7 habits of highly effective people” by Stephen covey, I looked through the table of contents and realized that I had already experienced all seven of the habits he had expressed in the book. This was all related to my twelve years I had spent in the Army before my injury had happened. I was released then started attending school, and eventually ending up in a Management class where the book appeared. I realized that I am now reliving it through the college experience and eventually will reuse the habits in the civilian work force. Although many of the experiences were similar in certain ways, reading the book itself gave me a much better perspective and understanding from these habits. The outcome of each was so different from what I had experienced in the Army. The power of the Paradigm, which was covered in part one of his book, stated that, “We simply assume that the way we see things is the way they really are or the way they should be” (Covey p.32). Just like a service member, whether still in or out of the service, has a smile every day to cover the sadness, Anger, and pain, which they may be struggling from PTSD, stress, and anxiety.
