Should students have so much homework after school? Does it really affect a child’s health? Is it harmful? I strongly believe kids should have less homework because it may cause stress to students. It may also interrupt with a child’s quality time with family or friends. An over abundance of homework can also make life at home and in school a lot harder, because you are always concentrated on the next assignment you have to finish, rather than focusing on time with family and friends. Too much homework has also been proven to have damaging effects on the health of students.
According to the article “Stanford research shows pitfalls of homework” The author Clifton B. Parker quotes the research of Denise Pope a senior lecturer at Stanford Graduate

Students should get less homework because too much can cause a great deal of health problems and stress, and too much time is required to complete it. Homework can cause health issues and build stress. “A hundred years ago, you had medical doctors testifying that heavy loads of books were causing children’s spines to be bent,” says Brian Gill, a senior social scientist at the Rand Corporation. It’s not healthy for students...

Persuasive Essay On Homework

...Why do teachers give homework and does it even help?”Ideally homework should be about taking something home, spending a few curious and interesting moments in which children might engage with parents, and then getting that project back to school — an organizational triumph," she says. "A nag-free activity could engage family time: Ask a parent about his or her own childhood. Interview siblings." Teachers give too much non effective homework. Margot Steinberg of White Plains, whose children are in the Ardsley district, said: ''The kids get so much homework, they're not getting something out of it. They're doing it to get it done.''If this were to happen in our school there would be a tremendous change and happier students. Homework causes students to...

As Homework Grows, So Do Arguments Against It

...Homework is a huge part of the daily lives of students. Many people believe homework is essential for success in class and a new understanding on materials, but that idea has its critics. Recent data has shown homework to be unhelpful for students’ learning. In Valerie Strauss’ article “As Homework Grows, So Do Arguments Against It” from September 12, 2006 Washington Post she uses pathos and logos effectively, by supporting her thoughts with reliable sources to discuss the controversy of whether or not homework is beneficial and necessary. Homework is often a negative word in our culture. Research shows that there is actually no benefit, yet, students continue to spend hours on homework each night: Elementary school students get no academic benefit from homework -- except reading and some basic skills practice -- and yet schools require more than ever. High school students studying until dawn probably are wasting their time...

Homework Should Be Banned

...Gelais 1 Mrs. Trouville English CP III 15 December 2015 Should Schools Be Done with Homework? Have you ever enjoyed a day of relaxation? Have you ever experienced the thrill of having a day just to goof off? Has homework kept you away from that? Kids hate homework. Some kids say that homework is just what they learned in class the same day and they are just repeating it. Why do students need to repeat what we did in class that day? Is it necessary? Some reasons why homework is not effective is that many teachers give too much homework, and often teachers do not coordinate the quantity given. Secondly, unnecessary assignments raise the stress level of the students. However, the main argument against homework is that most of it is just boring practice. Teachers give too much homework to kids and it’s not necessary. In an article written by Lance J. Falk it states that “kids have lives beyond school and schoolwork. About 65 percent of kids, ages of 6-13, play competitive sports. But, unfortunately, some of those kids quit playing the sport they love due to the fact that they have too much schoolwork to tackle during their evening” (Falk). If a student has three soccer practices a week, which consumes 2.5 hours of his Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons, how do you think he or she feels? He or she would obviously feel very tired, right? But now if that same student had two hours of homework three of the five days that he or she has school he or she would...

...Is homework harmful or helpful? Since many centuries as the education system has developed one thing remained the same i.e. homework. Every student gets homework whether he is in primary level or he is studying Master’s program. There are many debate going on weather homework is good or bad. I think Homework is bad for student and it may sometimes prove to be dangerous to his life. Firstly, many schools think homework is good for students as they think it keep mind engage and helps to make student sharp. They also think that homework helps to build patience and develops the problem solving skill so they support giving more homework. Here some of the thing may be true but what they don’t know is that homework cause death. Yes, there are many case where homework caused death. One of the case is of China where “In Jiangxi, 3 primary school girls hold hands and jump off a building to commit suicide because of too much homework [sic]”. Here three girl died because they were unable to finish their homework. Secondly, many researcher have found that homework helped to increase the productivity of student. But they neglect the fact that too much homework caused counterproductive as well “Pope and her colleagues found that excess homework can diminish its effectiveness and even be counterproductive. The researchers cite prior research indicating that homework benefits plateau at about two hours per night, and that 90 minutes to two and a half hours is optimal for high school...

Limiting Homework

...who gives you something to take home to think about besides homework.” Actress Lily Tomlin is correct. When students get home after a six-hour school day they are often overwhelmed with outrageous amounts of homework. This extra and sometimes unnecessary burden adds only anxiety to the average student leaving them a slave to their homework. This is a problem that can be alleviated with time and patience. Students are not happy with their current homework loads. Sixty-one percent of students in a recent survey concluded that they had to drop out of an activity because of their school workload (Galloway et al 2013). Obviously, homework affects students’ lives more than it should. It is not just something that a student would just finish in five to ten minutes. It takes hard work and brain dedication to finish homework at the time that it is required. One of the reasons that homework should be banned is because it is...

Harmful Homework

...Homework: Helpful or Harmful? Is homework harmful or helpful? In today’s education system, schools are preparing students for college by pressuring them to increase their test scores. Test scores seem to provide educators with a good standpoint of the student’s intelligence level. Therefore, educators have been ordering homework to be done since elementary school. A Countless number of students are being assigned a great amount of homework every day because educators think that it is essential and helpful. However, too much homework has seemed to negatively affect students in many ways. In recent studies, there has been a widespread call to realize the disadvantages of homework due to the strain it puts on students. Although homework may seem favorable because it seems to keep students busy and working, homework should not be considered the primary tool to improve students since homework medically affects students, is time consuming, and interferes with family life. Homework has medical affect on students since they are becoming sleep deprived as they struggle to complete a homework assignment that is due the next day. Studies show that students are now taking more risks due to excessive amounts of homework that cannot be completed efficiently in a given time. According to CNN Health’s Medical Assignment Manager Ann J. Curley, studies conducted show that more than two-thirds of American students report they are getting less than eight hours of sleep on school nights, which is...

Homework

...Homework and Testing 1 Homework and Testing Assigning Homework How much is too much? As with classroom assignments, homework should never be given as busy work. It should have a purpose with a goal. And as I mentioned in the Behavioral Approach to Learning, homework should NEVER be given as punishment. The kid will associate homework with punishment. This may interest you. Harris Cooper (1998) analyzed more than 100 research studies on homework in American schools. He found that homework had a very small connection with test scores at the elementary level. If anything, the more homework an elementary school student had, the more negative their attitude was toward school. Plus it takes away from their social time, which is an important part of growing up. Kids need to learn social skills. Too much homework causes stress, as you probably know very well by now. Kids need to have down time too! Why does homework have such a small effect at the elementary level? One reason is that young children have limited attention spans and are very distractible. It is difficult to do homework in a house that has many distractions. Teachers need to work with parents and help students find a quiet space to do homework. Most professional organization in education agrees that homework should never exceed 10 - 20 minutes per day in grades K - 2. In grades 3 - 6 homework should never exceed 30 - 60 minutes per day. Another reason elementary school children do not benefit much from homework is...

I Want To Declare My Declaration Of Independence

Teachers just assign students work and homework, not caring how much we already have from our other classes. Having three college classes and three high school classes gets really stressful. I have a good amount of homework and studying to do in each class. Having the buildup of stress due to this is quite overwhelming at times. Rarely I get a break from this and my stress levels lower significantly. If teachers would assign a little less work and not expect so much from students, we students would be happier. List of grievances: Students have too much homework and not enough time to do it. Teachers...

Why We Should Homework Be Required Essay

...there have been many arguments to whether or not homework should be required. What initially started as punishment for kids who messed around in class has become a mandatory task that all students are required to do daily. I’m here to end that, I intend to show you that students should not be required to complete homework for a grade. Homework consumes too much time and leaves no space for extracurricular activities and causes health problems. On top of that, many students don’t even have the resources required to complete the homework. Despite these things, homework is still a graded assignment that if failed to complete, can drastically bring down a student's grade. Consider the fact that the American standards for homework is much lower than anywhere else in the world. CNN conducted a study that showed that on average, in America students receive three times more homework than the recommended amount. 56% of students said that homework is a primary source of stress and frustration. Stress causes a vicious cycle. It can lead to heart diseases, depression, exhaustion, and pain, which in turn lead to more stress....

Homework Is a Waste of Time.

...Debate topic: HOMEWORK IS A WASTE OF TIME. Introduction: We all hate homework, but is it really important that we do it? Is doing homework good for us or is it simply a waste of time? This debate sets out the arguments on both sides .Homework is an assignment that students are given to do at home. It might be a continuation of classwork or a new piece of work. It may also be preparation for the next class. The amount of homework school students get varies a lot not only from country to country, or from school to school, but often from day to day. For most the amount of time spent on homework gets longer as we go through our school lives. At the start of primary school we get almost no homework but it is often several hours a day by the time we finish secondary school. The most important thing in this debate is not so much how much time is spent on homework but whether that time is wasted. If it is time well spent then having a lot of homework to do may not be a bad thing. The debate should therefore consider what else school children would do with that time. Another angle would be to look at whether school could replace homework with something that makes better use of time. For example in Britain the education secretary (the member of the government who controls education across the whole country) wants schools to scrap homework and instead have longer days in school. The affirmative: Homework teaches us to learn on our own The main aim of education is to prepare us for the...

Homework Is an Effective Way to Supplement Classroom Learning

...dismayed upon hearing those words from the teacher? Homework has long been a way to supplement students’ learning outside the classroom. This has also kept students busy every night, staring at their computer screens studying or researching about their assigned school work. Homework, in a way, is a good way of maintaing the knowledge students gained from school, but is it really the most effective way of providing supplemental studies? Most studies have shown that homework may be more supplemental than being detrimental to a student’s learning. On one perspective, it has been proven that assigning homework is beneficial to a student’s performance in school. Evidence has been found that homework is an effective supplemental form of learning, and “can impact positively on the retention and understanding of knowledge and can improve study skills...and demonstrate that learning can take place outside of formal schooling,” (qtd. in Department of Education and the Arts 7). This shows that studying should not just be confined to the walls of the classroom, and that after-school learning is vital to reinforce what has been taught by the teacher to the students. Without this reinforcement, students might easily forget the concepts learned in the classroom. Thus, this would result to a poor evaluation performance. This is especially true to students who do not pay attention during Evaristo 2 class time. Because of homework, they would be forced to study the lesson, and soon enough...

Argument Summary: Eliminating Homework In School

...Eliminating Homework An Italian teacher named Roberto Nevilis lived in a city of Venice, in 1901. Roberto Nevilis made homework as a punishment for his students to fully understand and comprehend the lessons that Nevilis tried to teach the students’ in school. If the homework keeps affecting students in a negative way, than not a lot of students will graduate because of having low grade point average (GPA), which requires students to graduate from school, or students going to start dropping out of school because of not containing enough interest in finishing or doing homework. Students can not understand homework without some help from a teacher, if students have a hard time understanding work in class than the homework will make no sense...

No portion of this book may be sold, by any process or technique, without the express consent of the publisher. INTRODUCTION America has come to realize that its national educational system is not reaching enough of its students. Basic skills at the primary levels of school have decreased, as have the standard test scores of high school graduates. In addition, there are 23 million illiterate adults (those whose basic skills are below fifth grade level) and another 35 million semi-literate adults (those whose basic skills are below eighth grade level). Certainly, the educational system alone is not to blame for this problem. Parents and communities must bear some of the responsibility. In reality, poor school achievement has many causes. Family instability can disrupt the support system children need to concentrate on their studies effectively. Single parents are often too busy with routine tasks to deal adequately with their children’s school responsibilities. Students frequently change schools and lose the continuity essential for successful achievement. Many students have jobs after school and feel overwhelmed by required homework. Some teachers give routine, run-of-the-mill assignments, scarcely exciting or stimulating creative thinking. Many educators also neglect to teach students “how to study.” Poor study habits...
