Communication is made up of two parts: receptive and expressive Alsop, L. (1993) communication (Figure 1). Receptive communication refers to the way a listener receives & understands a message from a communication partner*. Expressive communication refers to how one conveys a message to a communication partner by gesturing, speaking, writing, or signing. Meaning can be added to expressive communication by using specific body language or vocal inflection. However, there is not a defined author on this article, it leads me to believe that I don’t know if the author is credible or just giving information based on experiences. The article seems to be taking snippets from other sources. The article seems to give insight where most people are looking for it, the article can help with articulating what you want to say and give you pointers on how to keep on track during a speech. But as it is not a long article it leaves room for improvement. The point of this article is to help people understand that talking in public is hard but you can easily overcome small fears with a little help. One great piece of information is “Don’t apologize or make excuses” (2016, p.2) In turn, 3 public speaking myths busted seems to be a lot like my above article. ...anxiousness that I had, after my school counselor told me that I needed to take a Speech Communication class. Knowing that it was a pre requisite to graduate, I know that I had no other choice but to tough it out. The next several weeks, I thought would be some “agonizing” weeks, turned out to be some of the most fruitful times I had at National University. Public speaking has always been one of my weaknesses, but taking this class has provided me with many tools to add to my tool bag to be successful in public speaking. ...I once listened to a speech where ethics were involved that affected me as a listener. It was an informative speech cautioning smokers to smoke in designated areas only. Although I am not a smoker, there were times that the speaker alienated smokers. The speaker stated that for the second time in three months, this facility suffered a fire in close proximity to a building. The first fire was caused by the careless disposal of a cigarette butt and the second fire is still officially under investigation by the fire department; however, preliminary findings point to the exact same cause - careless disposal of a cigarette butt in an area outside a designated smoking area. The callous disregard of smoking regulations on the part of a minority of employees represents a direct threat to the safety and livelihoods of other employees. I cannot and will not continue to turn a blind eye to these threats. My primary responsibilities revolve around the safety and health of our valued employees, and the successful execution of our vital work.
