“Suddenly they were not submissive anymore” (Duberman 144). These were the words of Deputy Inspector Pine that were used in response to the Stonewall Inn Riots that took place in 1969. The Stonewall riots were not the first, nor would it be the last of pro LGBT uprisings against a system of injustice and institutionalized oppression. Martin Duberman and Che Gossett both examine the effect of and the history of the riots, however Duberman historicizes the personal narratives of some individuals who participated or were present, and Gossett explores the process of memorializing such events and the impact that privileging narratives has on the authenticity of the event. This paper will analyze the articles of Che Gossett and Martin Duberman on the Stonewall Inn uprising, the precursors associated to it, and it’s privilege within the memorialization and the historical narrative of LGBT uprisings. …show more content…
Duberman explains that during this time in New York it was illegal to dress in clothing that was deemed contradictory to one’s assigned gender, though because the Stonewall was considered as one of, “the most congenial downtown bars” (Duberman 123) members of the LGBT community could visit with lower likelihood of harassment. Duberman notes however, men in makeup were tolerated, but not exactly cherished” (Duberman 125). The riots at Stonewall is an example by which members within the LGBT community released generations of repressed rage against a system of institutionalized heteronormativity that violently acts against those who are different. The Stonewall riots were unique in that it, “ was a material metaphor for emergence, visibility, pride… [And] memorializes an act of legitimatization, not an act of parliament, a treaty, or a war” (Duberman

By reading the biography of the author it can give insight to how they were affected by the period in which they lived and the circumstances they encountered. In “People Who Take Care” by Nancy Henry. She describes how “people who take care of people are not worth much” (Henry 3-4). In her biography it is explained how she was a hard worker.
