A Fighting Spirit Aside from Arnold Spirit initially deciding to attend Rearden, Arnold's most important decision was to defend himself against Roger. After Roger and his friends insulted Arnold, Arnold reacts defensively in this way: "I knew I had to do something big. I couldn't let them get away with that s**t. I wasn't just defending myself. I was defending Indians, black people, and buffalo" (Alexie 65). This quotation is meaningful to Arnold in many ways, and Arnold's rational outbreak of violence is not just about Roger's skin deep insults. Arnold was harboring his indignation and holding back his distension. With Arnold's lamentable home circumstances, and his tough decision to transfer schools in order to pursue hope, he was unstable

Pride Comes Before a Fall

...source of the phrase "pride comes before the fall" is the Bible, specifically Proverbs 16:18, which reads, "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall" in the New International Version. Some Bible scholars understand this verse to mean that God will discipline pride by causing or allowing events to produce humility in a person, while others simply note that pride produces carelessness that can lead to serious errors. Whichever belief a person holds, someone who says "pride comes before the fall" usually means it as a warning that someone thinks too highly of himself or herself, and that the person in question will soon experience negative consequences because of this overconfidence. History is full of examples when this adage has played out. Several famous battles are said to have ended in defeat because military leaders' overconfidence caused them attempt foolhardy attacks. Business leaders have made unethical and illegal decisions, thinking they will not be caught, only to lose their jobs or land in prison. In these cases and countless others, pride went before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. Once when I was younger I came across this book entitled “Aesop’s Fables” and there was one that was titled, “The Fighting Cocks and the Eagle”. The story goes like this: Two game cocks were fighting fiercely to be king of the farmyard. One finally gained advantage and the other surrendered. The losing Cock slunk away and hid himself in a quiet corner...

Summary of Rizal's Essays

...To the Young Women of Malolos: Summary and Analysis Jose Rizal’s legacy to Filipino women is embodied in his famous essay entitled, “To the Young Women of Malolos,” where he addresses all kinds of women – mothers, wives, the unmarried, etc. and expresses everything that he wishes them to keep in mind.  SUMMARY “To the Women of Malolos” was originally written in Tagalog.  Rizal penned this writing when he was in London, in response to the request of Marcelo H. del Pilar.  The salient points contained in this letter are as follows: 1. The rejection of the spiritual authority of the friars – not all of the priests in the country that time embodied the true spirit of Christ and His Church.  Most of them were corrupted by worldly desires and used worldly methods to effect change and force discipline among the people. 2. The defense of private judgment 3. Qualities Filipino mothers need to possess – as evidenced by this portion of his letter, Rizal is greatly concerned of the welfare of the Filipino children and the homes they grow up in. 4. Duties and responsibilities of Filipino mothers to their children 5. Duties and responsibilities of a wife to her husband – Filipino women are known to be submissive, tender, and loving.  Rizal states in this portion of his letter how Filipino women ought to be as wives, in order to preserve the identity of the race. 6. Counsel to young women on their choice of a lifetime partner RIZAL’S MESSAGE TO FILIPINO...

8th Habit

...The 8th Habit By Stephen Covey A Summary The Whole-Person paradigm says that people are whole people - body, mind, heart and spirit - and they have four related capacities: (1) Physical Intelligence, (2) Mental Intelligence, (3) Emotional Intelligence, and (4) Spiritual Intelligence. People also have four related needs: (1) To Live - Survival, (2) To Love - Relationships, (3) To Learn - Growth and Development, and (4) To Leave a Legacy - Meaning and Contribution. People have choices - in fact, there are six choices that we have in any situation (1) rebel or quit, (2) malicious obedience, (3) willing compliance, (4) cheerful cooperation, (5) heartfelt commitment and (6) creative excitement. People want to be paid fairly, used creatively, treated kindly and given an opportunity to serve human needs in principled ways. So, whole people (body, mind, heart and spirit) with four basic needs (1) to live, (2) to learn, (3) to love, and (4) to leave a legacy) and four intelligences or capacities (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) and their highest manifestations (discipline, vision, passion and conscience) all of which represent the four dimensions of voice (need, talent, passion and conscience). Genocide

...Genocide Name: Course: Tutor: Date: Introduction The term genocide refers to the mass murder of a specific race or tribe or group of people with the sole intention of eliminating the said group. As the world came to realize with the discrimination of Jews by the Nazi forces, genocide does not sit on the same bench as other crimes such as burglary. The spirited effort towards the elimination of a single race or tribe is the driving force of this heinous crime. It is said “power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. At the centre of genocide, power and resources are usually the propagators of this vice. In a state in which the availability and distribution of resources is anything short of equal, negative ethnic traits such as tribalism, nepotism and even clanism, in other cases, can easily result in the onset of genocide. Greed is also a consistent feature of many genocide-stricken states. The more worrying issue, apart from the killing of millions of innocent civilians, is the prejudice with which many of the leaders of these factions plan and coordinate these atrocities. The notion that leaders are well above the law is characteristic of states that have felt the iron grip of genocide. The case of Darfur is one of the most disheartening. Darfur has been embroiled in the throes of genocide for the better part of the 21st Century. Having been the first genocide of the 21st Century, the mention of Darfur does not resonate well on the global landscape. Upon...

An Outline of English Literature

...PILGRIMS From Royal MS., 18 D.ii, in the British Museum PREFACE This book, which presents the whole splendid history of English literature from Anglo-Saxon times to the close of the Victorian Era, has three specific aims. The first is to create or to encourage in every student the desire to read the best books, and to know literature itself rather than what has been written about literature. The second is to interpret literature both personally and historically, that is, to show how a great book generally reflects not only the author's life and thought but also the spirit of the age and the ideals of the nation's history. The third aim is to show, by a study of each successive period, how our literature has steadily developed from its first simple songs and stories to its present complexity in prose and poetry. To carry out these aims we have introduced the following features: (1) A brief, accurate summary of historical events and social conditions in each period, and a consideration of the ideals which stirred the whole nation, as in the days of Elizabeth, before they found expression in literature. (2) A study of the various literary epochs in turn, showing what each gained from the epoch preceding, and how each aided in the development of a national literature. (3) A readable biography of every important writer, showing how he lived and worked, how he met success or failure, how he influenced his age, and how his age influenced him. (4) A study and analysis of every...

Did Jesus in this verse advocate the use of a sword for self-defense purposes? This is an issue over which Christians have vehemently disagreed for many centuries.
