In the team player assessment, I scored the highest in the category of being a Collaborator. After reading what being a collaborator meant in a group setting I was feeling pretty happy. I believe that being a collaborator is not a dreadful trait because collaborators are goal-directed and flexible in order to complete their work with other members of a team. I must admit that this result portrays myself pretty well because I am all about helping others and not being the center of attention in certain situations. The results from the other of the self-assessments were positive because they showed that I am a wonderful listener and I am very aware of my surroundings. From this, I cultivated more about my listening abilities and how I have applied …show more content…
A leader should strive to push the people under him/her to be their best and push each other to become better team players. This all stems from a performance-based setting within a company such as sales, where competition pushes people to compete. Competition is not necessarily a negative element when it comes to personal and group performance because it actually pushes people to complete their best work. This is a situation where an emerging leader would have the opportunity to step up and help wherever he/she is called upon in order to resolve any conflicts of interest where they may arise. Having exceptional leadership qualities is one special trait that every owner/boss is looking for and, in many ways, can lead to a pay raise and new job opportunities for the …show more content…
I realized when I was a young boy that being an effective leader is to lead by example. A leader should not always abide in solely being a vocal leader, but they should show people that they stay the course and perform tasks the right way. Leading by example shows the followers of the leader that they too can be an effective and successful leader. I discovered this specific type of leadership from one of my first football coaches at the age of nine years old. I desired to show my coaches that I could be a leader on and off the field after I had received this message. I have no doubt that from their teachings to my teammates and I it made each of us exceptional young men at the time. I used those teachings throughout my life in the sport of football, in the classroom, with my family, and with my friends. Having exceptional leadership qualities helps not only myself, but the others around me to fabricate the right decisions and stay out of trouble. I have used these same teachings from my coaches with the youth within our community here in Arizona and back home in California through youth league football camps and clinics. I believe that these same teachings will help the youth become remarkable men and women one day and will help them become successful in the future. Being an admirable leader on the field translates to the real world because it gives you

A Critical Analysis of My Own and My Colleagues’ Performance During Our Class Based Teamwork

...different types of companies. Although some of them were talented and professional, there was a consensus among us: we do not need a leader in my team. As we worked under a fair position, we could identify other members’ merits and drawbacks directly without hesitation. In my team, each member played their own role very well in tasks which were assigned on course, such as motivation case study, observation task, role play case study and managing change case study. My assignment will focus on team roles and communication. Team roles Adair (1986: 127) claims that team is a group in which the contributions of individuals are regarded as reciprocal rather than just a group with the same objective. Cole (2002: 84) suggests that a role should be differentiated from a position, which is principally a remark of the duties and individual has been distributed. Therefore, our team discussed each member’s role and job at the beginning of the term. According to Belbin (2010: 22), there are nine distinct team-roles that provided us with enough distinctive attributes to see the range of roles that can be performed in a team, and they are Plant, Resource investigator, Co-ordinator, Shaper, Monitor evaluator, Teamworker, Implementer, Completer, Specialist. In the next several paragraphs, I will present their definitions and who played these roles in my team respectively. Plant Belbin (2010: 43) highlights...

...Marion BELLAIS A good team player I – Facts : Since his graduation from college, Steven does it right as a staff accountant in the accounts payable section of a major industrial firm for several years. He is confident about his capacities, it is why it was not stressed about the arrival of a new supervisor in his service. The new manager of accounts payable, Kristin, had been transferred to Steven’s division from a similar position in another subsidiary of the company because of her proven talent for organizing and improving the efficiency of operations. Kristin was experienced and determined to perform her new assignment with the same vigor that had brought her so much success throughout her career. At the reception, Kristin circulated through the room, introducing herself to her new subordinates and asking each of them if they had any suggestions that would help make the payables section a better place to work. When she approached Steven, he told her that people seemed to him to gain promotions and be given opportunities to work overtime based on who liked them, and not on the quality of their work. In reply, Kristin politely stated that she would do everything that she could to see that whatever it was he was referring to would have no place in the team she would lead. The next day, Steven received a phone call from Kristin’s secretary asking that he meet with his new boss later that morning. He had barely entered her office for the meeting when she looked him straight...

Teamwork

...career. During my work life of 9 years in different firms I have how important Team and Teamwork really is. I have worked in different situations with different people and I strongly believe that Teamwork is basis for successful results. Together Everyone Achieves More (TEAM) In today’s world TEAM and Team work plays an increasingly important role be it in any given situation. Chuck Page once said “A single leaf working alone provides no shade.” To succeed at the task in hand everyone involved needs to combine their efforts. If everyone does their job well, then team accomplishes more. One should realize the fact that great achievement can be made if individuals master the fundamentals and work together as one unit. Everyone has a unique role, but each person's individual role must be recognised and appreciated. Every team member is important and need to understand how important it is for him/her to work smoothly together for the benefit of both team and team member. Each player must be dedicated to the whole team and be willing to act unselfishly. When challenges arise (as they always do), the team needs to have the resources, accountability and commitment to deal with them in a constructive and positive manner. A sense of teamwork will play an integral part in this. When team members work together for the good of all, everyone achieves more, keeping in mind that the development of an effective team requires a positive attitude and dedication towards the teamwork, along with...

Reflection Paper

...Michael Buzzinotti BA 321 22 October 2012 Reflection Paper 2 Team work is one of the most important concepts of everyday life. A team is a group of individuals who strive to work together in order to achieve a common group goal (Janasz, Dowd, Schneider, 2012). The ability to be a team player can be applied in the business world, as well as many other aspects of life. Henry Ford once said, “Coming Together is a beginning; keeping together is a progress; working together is a success.” In my opinion, this means that there is a process in working collaboratively to reach an objective. Coming together and staying together are insignificant unless you’re able to work together and meet your objective. The first two parts of the quote are merely preparations in the process that will eventually lead to success if team work is demonstrated. Whether it is in my current social life or in the workplace, I’ve experienced team work on a daily basis. My most vivid memory of having to be a team player was in high school when I participated on the golf team, and eventually ended up leading it. I made varsity team as a freshman and was on the starting roster. Professional golf might be an individual sport, but in high school, it’s as much of a team sport as football or baseball. Not only did I rely on my team to do well, but they relied on me. There was always a team mate by your side during a round of golf, so strategies and advice were constantly being thrown back and forth to one another...

10 Tips for Getting Your Colleagues to Work with

...1. Make teamwork a priority by making it part of the performance management system. * This begins with performance expectations when someone joins the organization, Weisman says. “I was speaking with a prospective client last summer who was complaining about this very thing--that their people were not working well together--so I asked her, ‘Well, do you assess their contribution to teamwork as part of your annual performance review process?’ She looked at me like a deer in headlights and responded as if it was a master stroke of genius.” If you don't measure it and give people the expectation at the very beginning of their role with the organization, it will not be seen as priority. 2. Pinpoint the problem. * “Explore your feelings and behavior toward your colleagues,” says Parnell. “Social and professional relationships are inextricably symbiotic and interactive, and much of the communication that occurs is both subconscious and reactive.” If your colleagues seem to be difficult, they may actually be reacting to the signals you are giving off – whether consciously or unconsciously. While this might be a bitter pill to swallow, you may be the very root of the problem and the first step toward recovery is discovering this. 3. Do not complain to management. * “Mommy, mommy! Jimmy isn’t being nice!” isn’t going to cut it here. In fact, it will just make things worse. “Going over someone’s head to leverage them with authority is the best way to gain faux cooperation...

Teams

...Teams Alexandria Aguirre Dr. Nate CotePrinciples of Supervision 1 (D50)Dona Ana Community College | What are teams? Why are they important? When you think about teamwork, you may recognize effective, productive teams. You may also recognize groups of individuals who have been put together to work on a task who just don't seem to make the same progress. Your answer as to what a team is may be working together with other people to figure out a problem; and you are exactly correct. Teams are better in some situations, but not necessary needed in all. In fact, they may have some disadvantages that are inappropriate for the work place. Teams typically outperform individuals when the tasks being done require multiple skills, judgment, and experience, but when the individual isn’t a team player, teams are just about as good as the individual himself. (Robbins and DeCenzo 275-84) Many times, teams are often confused with groups. Teams and groups are similar, but not completely. What differentiates both is that in a team, the members are committed to a common purpose, have a set of specific performance goals, and hold themselves equally responsible for the team’s results. A group is individuals working interdependent who come together to reach a particular objective. There are four types of teams that carry different level of effectiveness. They are: a working group, a pseudo team, a potential team, and a real team. In a working group, there is no work or opportunity to engage...

Learning Team

...LEARNING TEAM CHARTER – TEAM “A” |Course Title |GEN/195 FOUNDATIONS OF UNIVERSITY STUDIES 2 Team Ground Rules and Guidelines What are the general expectations for all members of the team? To at least acknowledge one another and respond even if it is ‘OK’. We understand how chaotic life, work school, etc. can be but what we all must remember is we decided to attend college (again). Keeping that in mind, contact with one another is a must also. We know we all are pretty much acquaintance and it might be a little difficult to do but to build a great team we need to start a foundation. When it comes to turning in assignments as a team we think it will benefit everyone if we summit to our thread at least a day in advance so one of the other team member (or leader of the week) can put together a draft for all of us to turn in or just decide what name gets what question. We’ve never been much of a team player but this is a learning experience for me and probably other students. We should all remember that we have our team depending on us to pull our weight and make the right choices. 4 Expectations for Time Management and Involvement (Participation, communication with the team, accessibility, etc.) Each individual person should be required to post a general update once during the week in order to keep communication strong. In addition, everyone is...

...Ethics Case: "A Good Team Player" 1) Describe the factual situation Steven, a staff accountant in the accounts payable section, is confident that he knows the “ins” and “outs” of the bureaucratic organization he works in. Kristin, a new manager of accounts payable, no non-sense type of manager, Kristin was experienced and determined to perform her new assignment with the same vigor that had brought her so much success throughout her career. Steven believes people seem to gain promotions and have the opportunity to work overtime based on who likes them rather than the quality of their work. As a result, Steven who is dissatisfied with what he senses are political machinations that have influenced managerial decision making within his firm, suggests to Kristin that things would be better if the political could be stopped. Kristin uses the power of her new position to get Steven to give her the names of the bad team players or else she will start to think he is part of the problem. Steven, stunned, cannot think of a way to respond. 2) Identify the possible courses of action. There are three possible courses of action that I can take away from this situation. One situation involves Steven and the company, and one that involves Steven only. 1. Steven would be to respond Kristin's demands and give her the names of the bad team players. By doing this, it would benefit himself in the long run and will allow the company to better their work force. 2. Steven...

...In case scenario number one, the psychiatric nurse was being aggressive. Her choice of words and communication style were inappropriate, unprofessional, and rude. This situation required intervention from management including counseling with psychiatric nurse on respectful and tactful communication. The staff RN clearly does not value the input of the CNA and has no respect for his position or duties. Without teamwork and collaboration of all staff, there will be a breakdown in communication resulting in poor patient care. Rashad was trying to clarify his role and responsibilities through passive communication. Due to the aggressive response made by another team member, Rashad likely felt unappreciated and angered by the lack of respect and condescending commentary from his team member. Rashad should discuss this with management and express his concerns and feelings regarding the inconsideration and demeaning behavior from staff RN. Rashad’s after thoughts of sabotage and insubordination are passive aggressive. This type of communication is indirect and ineffective in problem solving. Aggressive communication can create a hostile work environment, untrusting relationships, and low morale. This type of communication creates a vicious cycle of arrogant dictatorship and indirect antagonism. When there is lack of collaboration and listening, there is little chance of a productive working relationship (Hansten & Jackson, 2009). In case scenario two, Pamela was being nonassertive...

Good Team Player

...A Good Team Player Stakeholders Steven, Assistant Department Manager- Accounts Payable Kristin, Newly appointed supervisor of Accounts Payable Department Other managers and employees at the Accounts Payable Department Main Problem: Should Steven name the names of the people who he thought are not acting on the interest of the companies? Sub-Problem: Do you think Steven intentionally hinted Kristin regarding this issue? Conclusion: Being a leader does not mean getting the upper hand, but it means that one should lower his/her hand, stretch it out so that other can reach it and together they can accomplish what it needs to be done. It is also not wise for Kirsten to force Steven to name those people as she is depriving them fairness in judgment. Team work lies on the attitude of the leaders. It is them who can make or break the outlook of the department thus it is them who can model what “acting on the best interest of the company” would mean. A Case Study Prepared by China Chua Background of the Case: Kristin is forcing Steven to spill the beans on who are the employees that are not acting on the best interests of the company, based on what he had told her earlier on their first meeting. Recommendation: No, he should not give her the names, instead he should clarify to Kirsten that what he said earlier was a mere comment/opinion and it meant no harm to her or his team mates.
