One out of three children in America are raised with an absent father, and for them, the quixotic hope of a picturesque, ideal home life lies further away than those with a “man of the house” to guide them. While a complicated social issue among children of all race and gender, Wes Moore, in the book "The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates," magnifies how being a fatherless black boy in the gritty Baltimore undergrounds is an even higher bump in the road to adulthood. While all children with no father are susceptible to violence and crime, the situation in which they lost their father is directly related to the intensity of their struggles. Thus, the absence of a father can have dissimilar effects on male offspring in cases of death or abandonment. …show more content…
Wes 1 (whose father died) turned out to be a business leader, Rhodes Scholar, and White House Fellow while Wes 2 (who was abandoned) became a convicted murderer. The death of a father has many devastating consequences on his son, as it causes a higher risk of domestic violence, rebellion (Joiner), and “leaves a permanent vacuum in family dynamic” (Kruk). All fatherless children, regardless of cause, are left with a gap in their childhood and are more likely to struggle in academics, succumb to peer pressure, and fall into the prison system. Studies conclude that 85% of youth in prison have an absent father (Sawhill). Isabel V. Sawhill, in her article, “Are Children Raised with Absent Fathers Worse Off?”, explains that “children who end up in a single parent family as the result of death do not have the same poor outcomes …show more content…
His life is not only missing a key component, but he is betrayed; feeling bewilderment and resentment towards the man who willingly decided to leave him fatherless. On page 101 of “The Other Wes More: One Name, Two Fates,” Moore writes, “Wes’s (2) nonexistent relationship with his father probably contributed to his seeming indifference of becoming a father himself. All he knew was his mom… he wasn’t even sure he had a role.” During this time in the novel, Wes 2’s family is discovering that his girlfriend is pregnant. While his family is under great distress and trauma, Wes 2 has grown desensitized of growing up in a single parent home, and therefore is naïve of the correct steps a father must take. He presumes that parenting is one-sided, only a responsibility on the mother, because that is the exact setting he has lived in his entire life. Boys with late fathers usually have no significant displeasure toward them and may have at least caught a glimpse of that consideration, if not the hope that their father would’ve been affectionate enough. Since death is an independent factor, children with dead fathers are not forsaken, but simply unlucky

Despite their many similarities, the choices they each made are what granted them separate fates. Discuss how the culture of both Wes 1 and Wes 2 impacted their personalities and outlook on life resulting in different outcomes? Culture is defined as specific behaviors or beliefs of characteristics from a particular social, ethnic, or age group that defines the quality of that person. Both Wes 1 and Wes 2 derived from the same city and unfortunately one lived his dream while the other didn’t. Themes In The Other Wes Moore

...On page 126 of The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates by Wes Moore, Wes makes the comment, “The expectations that others place on us form our expectations of ourselves.”. This becomes a central quote in the book and encompases the theme of The Other Wes Moore. When Wes makes this comment, he is pointing out that other people influence our personal goals and aspirations for ourselves. When other people; be it parents, friends, or teachers; place expectations on us, we tend to believe those expectations ourselves. For example, both Wes Moore’s grew up in communities that had low expectations for its children and teens- to just be a drug dealer and make money. The author-Wes had a mother that stuck to her word and had high expectations for his future; and even with that positive role model in his life expecting more of him, he had to work hard and sacrifice his time to beat his community’s expectations and expect himself to become successful. On the other hand, the other Wes did not have...

Reflection On The Other Wes Moore

...In the novel written by Wes Moore entitled “The Other Wes Moore, told stories about the fates of two different people with the same name and living area. The stories about each of them are very interesting and unique. However, some of the stories are really challenging for me to perceive as a reality that had happened in someone’s life. The stories seems to be quite illogical from my perspective of view because I believe that every grown up adult have the capability of differentiating between the right choice and the wrong ones. For instance, Wes, who is a grown teenager raised by Mary, made many mistakes in his life even though plenty of advises have been given to him. Firstly, Tony has advised Wes to stay away from drugs or any business related...

...In the book The Other Wes Moore the author, who is an accomplished writer, U.S. Marine, fine athlete, graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Oxford University, a one time White House Fellow, Rhode Scholar, a happily married man who traveled the world, is looking back into his troubled childhood trying to figure out what made him the man he’s become and prevented him from going down the path that so many young men with the same background, have taken. The question of what made the difference in the author’s life was provoked by the small article Wes Moore read in the local Baltimore newspaper. The article described the events of the robbery that left a security guard dead. By coincidence, one of the criminal’s name was Wes Moore, the same name the author has. “…I was struck by the superficial similarities between us, of course: we’d grown up at the same time, on the same streets, with the same name…”(xii). The convicted Wes was analyzing both of the life stories as well. He said: “…From everything you told me, both of us did some pretty wrong stuff when we were younger. And both of us had second chances. But if the situation or the context where you make the decisions don’t change, then second chances don’t mean too much…”(66). To that Wes the writer answered: “…I guess it’s hard sometimes to distinguish between second chances and last chances…”. In my essay I will refer to the writer as “Fortunate Wes” and refer to the convicted criminal as “Unfortunate Wes”. It is nearly...
