Often called William Shakespeare’s farewell to the stage, The Tempest is considered to be one of his greatest plays. The Tempest is not set in reality, but in a mysterious world that melded everyday people and material with a beautiful fantasia. The Tempest features many fantastic themes, three of them include power and control, man versus monster and colonization. Out of all of the themes in The Tempest, these three themes are the most prevalent. The theme of power and control mainly ensues within Prospero, himself. This is prevailing in the way he treats his servants, Caliban and Ariel. Prospero says many nasty things to Caliban such as, “Thou poisonous slave, got by the devil himself. Upon thy wicked dam, Come forth!” (I.ii.383-384) From …show more content…
Prospero also controls Caliban with threats of using his magic to cause physical harm when he says, “For this, be sure, tonight thou shalt have cramps, side-stitches that shall pen thy breath up. Urchins Shall, forth at vast of night that they may work, all exercise on thee.” (I.ii.389-392) Prospero is always hostile and threatening in the ways he attempts to control Caliban. Although, Prospero is not as hostile with Ariel, he manipulates Ariel into remaining his servant. For instance, in Act 1, Scene 2, Prospero says to Ariel, “It was mine art, when I arrived and heard thee, that made gape The pine and let thee out.” (I.ii.293-295) In this quote, Prospero is referring to the fact that he had saved Ariel from the witch, Sycorax and therefore Ariel should owe his life to him. This theme is mainly applicable to Caliban. Caliban is certainly not treated like a human by Prospero and Miranda. Miranda says, “Abhorred slave, which any print of goodness wilt not take, being capable of all ill! I pitied thee, took pains to make thee speak, taught thee each hour one thing or another” (I.ii.354-357) Miranda believes that Caliban is less human because he does not have a humanlike appearance and did not know how to speak or act like a human. She believes that Caliban will never be “trained to be good.” Prospero detests everything about Caliban. He claims he only treats Caliban badly because Caliban tried to rape Miranda. However, it is clear to some, that Prospero always detested Caliban because of his ugly, inhuman appearance.
