The most important compromises achieved by the delegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 were The Great Compromise and The Three-Fifths Compromise. I chose to detail about The Three-Fifths Compromise. It was a compromise between Southern and Northern states managed during the Philadelphia Convention of 1787 in which five slaves would count as three free persons.
The opposing sides were the Northern states and Southern states. The Northern states argued that only free citizens could be counted towards apportionment, while the Southern states argued that slaves should be counted towards their population apportionment. William R. Davie of North

Compare And Contrast The Three Fifths Compromise

...The Connecticut Compromise is an arrangement that larger and smaller states decided on at the Constitutional Convention of 1787. This convention characterized the legislative structure and representation that each state would have under the United State Constitutional. The Connecticut Compromise also is agreement that says the lower house would be based on population and the upper house each state would have two senators. The three Fifths Compromise was thought of by James Wilson where they wanted three-fifths slaves to count as a citizen. For taxes purposes slaves would be counted as a whole person. The south however, did not want slaves to be taxed while the north did not want slaves to count for population so that the southern states would not get more representatives. The separation of Powers(SOP), was...

...Events Leading Up to the Civil War Gino Russo 5/30/11 There are three events that occurred which setup the conditions for the Civil War. With these situations, a lot of people got mad. First, there was the Three-Fifths Compromise. This compromise was the counting of southern black slaves as three-fifths of a white man. Southern states wanted to count blacks so they would have more votes in Congress. Northern states didn’t want blacks to be counted because blacks did not vote. Congress eventually passed the three-fifths compromise so that blacks would partially count towards the South's vote. Second, the Compromise of 1850 was the passing of five bills based on Clay's proposals. The Compromise was setup to please both the north and the south but later caused outrage in the north. Third, States' Rights was boosted when the republicans wanted to get rid of the Alien and Sedition Acts. The Republicans faced a problem when opposing the law because at that time, the Supreme Court didn't have the power to strike down a law as unconstitutional. Congress agreed to a plan called the Three-Fifths Compromise. Each enslaved person would be counted as three fifths of a free person. With the compromise 500 enslaved people would count as 300 free people making this a gain for the south. The North had to agree on this to keep the South in the Union. The Three-Fifths Compromise preserved slavery in the new Constitution by making the distinction between “free persons” and “all other...

A large part of that power and weakness comes from the congress and its representatives. Representation within the government became an issue because everyone wanted equal voice. The Three-fifth compromise was an agreement between these diverse opinions to create a proper system of representation. It was a temporary fix to the issue for a much larger problem. What Is The Compromise Of The Constitution

...he Constitution first began when the states held a U.S. Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia 1787, that is where they began to write the Constitution. The goal of this meeting was to improve the Articles of Confederation. At the meeting, some wanted small changes to the Articles of Confederation, while others wanted to rewrite the whole document. They ended up rewriting the whole document, while most were happy with this “improvement” others were infuriated with the new changes. Some of the people rewriting the document served as legislatures or Congress. Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, and George Washington were involved in this meeting. George Washington was the president of this convention. I think the U.S Compromise of the Constitution...

...and the governor. The Articles of Confederation was written in 1777. The states were given power. The Congress could make laws, coin/borrow money, build roads and post offices, deal with foreign nations and declare war. Congress could not regulate trade, collect taxes and enforce laws. The states did not want to give lands to the government. Disputes over land slowed ratification of the Articles of Confederation. The land ordinance of 1785 broke land into six-square mile townships. The land ordinance of 1787 banned slavery and set up a three-step process for state hood. Governing a new nation led to compromises at the Constitutional Convention. The compromise of the constitutional convention caused the Great Compromise, a representative government and the three-fifths compromise. The House of Representatives and Senate were made. The senate had two votes per state. The House of Representatives was based on the state’s population. The compromises satisfied people who supported the Virginia...

The north was more focused on industry and expansion, and had a rapidly growing population and people looking for new ways to advance and live. Pdf, the Constitution

...HIS/115 US HISTORY TO 1865 Professor David Glauber Concerlo Cuthbertson University of Phoenix How the Constitution addressed the complaints in the Declaration of Independence: The United States Constitution was established to help set-up the first form of government, in the year 1787, and the Bill of Rights was later added in the year 1791. The Constitution was established for the common good of all people. The Constitution and Amendments were written to fix the problems stated in the Declaration of Independence which was written in the year 1776. The United States Constitution reflects and supports the idea of the Declaration of Independence. Many different problems from the Declaration of Independence needed to be fixed through the Constitution.”He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good”. (Declaration of Independence) The King of Great Britain refused to set laws for the common good of all people. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the Government. So according to the first amendment, the people’s common good is protected by Congress. There were several economic...

Compromises of Our Constitution

...COMPROMISES OF OUR CONSTITUTION America was built on compromises. What you lose in compromise, you gain by collaboration. A compromise means an agreement reached by opposing claims. (1) There were several compromises that were made to help form the Constitution of the United States. There were three main conflicts the new nation had to be resolve. The main ones were: The Great Compromise, The 3/5ths Compromise and also The Slave Trade Compromise. Even though there were conflicts over a strong central government, and states’ rights, the members in the Philadelphia Convention overcame their differences to form a democratic government that is for the people, and meets the needs of our nation. (2) The original document established for the United States to govern the people was adopted in 1777. It was called, the Articles of Confederation. It was outdated and it needed to be tweaked. Congress had very limited power to regulate national affairs, no authority to tax, or to regulate commerce. As a result of a weak central government, in 1787, the United States went bankrupt. With credit and debt problems, the states convinced the delegates to meet. So, they met in May, at the Convention, in Philadelphia. Rather than fix a broken system, the Virginia plan modeled a whole new government system, it had Federal and National Features. States would have power but submit to a national supreme authority. (3) The Great Compromise was very important. The Virginia plan had the structure...

Virginia Plan Vs New Jersey Plan Essay

...Representatives. The Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan both presented very different ways of representation. The Virginia Plan proposed that representation be based on population, for a more proportional vote, but the New Jersey Plan proposed that each state has one vote, for a more equal vote. In order to resolve this issue of representation, a new plan was accepted that called for a congress of two houses: in the upper house, or Senate, representation of the states would be equal, with each state having two senators; in the lower house, or House of Representatives, representation would be apportioned according to population of each state, so the states with more people would get more representatives. This was known as the Great Compromise. Now that representation in the house was based on population, a new issue arose. How slaves should be counted towards representation. The South wanted to include slaves in order to get more...

The Pros And Cons Of The US Constitution

...The United States Constitution overcame the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation and provided organization for the new government. In the 1780’s, the United States composed their first form of government after the colonists won the Revolutionary War against the British. This first form of government was known as The Articles of Confederation, which gave power to the states and created a unicameral legislature. A new constitution was made at the constitutional convention, which formulated many different compromises such as The Great Compromise, and the Three-Fifths compromise. Some people believed that the Constitution should be ratified, and some people thought it should not be, these people became known as federalists and antifederalists. While the articles of confederation created the first form of government for the states, it had many flaws. Some of these were resolved at the Constitutional Convention by creating many compromises, but people known as anti-federalists still thought that the constitution should not be ratified. This was solved by...

Compare And Contrast Benjamin Franklin's Contributions To The Constitutional Convention

...The Great Compromise was Benjamin Franklin's most important contribution to the Constitutional Convention; and his work in the Convention was his last great service to the country. He held the Convention together when many of the delegates were ready to leave. After many days of discussion the Great Compromise was adopted on July 16. It provided for a national congress of two houses. In the Senate, each state was given two representatives, thereby satisfying the small states' demand for equal representation. In the House of Representatives, the larger states were favored by basing representation on population; each state was first allowed one representative for every 40,000 inhabitants, later changed to one representative for every 30,000 inhabitants....

What Role Did Slavery Play In The Civil War

...Senators of the greater populated slave states disputed that slaves should be weighed as humans in deciding representation. Simultaneously they said that slaves ought to be considered a claim if the then modern government were to impose taxes on the states depending on the amount of people in that state. Congressmen from states where slavery had become minimized, of course argued in opposition: that slaves should be accounted for in taxation but not in deciding representation. Senators James Wilson and Robert Sherman suggested the Three-Fifths Compromise, which as you may know the assembly later ratified. The last negotiation settled the action of numerating each of the slaves as only three-fifths of a person. This lowered the strength of the slave states in relation to the primary southern propositions, but increased it over the Northern proposal. The three-fifths proposal was not a new idea; it had come about with a 1783 amendment recommended to the Articles of Confederation.  The proposition by a cabinet of the congress had proposed that taxes would be given by most of the colonies in  percentage...

North and South Essay

...between the North and the South. The North, for the most part, was against slavery in the South and didn’t want to see it expand to the Western states and territories. The North’s leaders saw economic and political advantages to leaving that area open to settlement by farmers and the working class. The North viewed slavery as a moral issue; degrading and cruel. The South, on the other hand, wanted to protect its influence in the federal government, proposing that a balance should be between free and slave states as the Union expanded. They saw slavery as a necessary “must’ and a way of life. Both, the North and the South were trying to extend their economic and political boundaries into the West. The Fugitive Slave Act under the Compromise of 1850, stated; in future any federal marshal who did not arrest an alleged runaway slave could be fined $1,000. People suspected of being a runaway slave could be arrested without warrant and turned over to a claimant on nothing more than his...
