The components of the environmental scan are comprised of information addressing the following: 1) Create an environmental scan for the company indicating the most significant environmental threats and discuss how the company should respond to each threat to ensure that the impact to the business is minimal. 2) Based on the environmental scan, evaluate the company’s strengths and evaluate how the company can leverage these strengths so as to yield a competitive advantage in the marketplace. 3) Identify a significant competitor for the company and assess how your company will compete against it to maximize profits and create value for stakeholders. 4) Assume that the U.S. economy is in a state of decline requiring modifications to the strategy. Evaluate how the strategy should be modified. Provide a justification of how this will help the company continue to compete in the marketplace. 5) Evaluate how global competition may impact the business strategy and determine how the company should respond. Jet Blue Airlines

...Jet Blue Airlines Strategic Management (Bus 599) October 16, 2011 In today’s society there are very few things that are limited in number. There are an immense number of companies that provide goods and services; those companies include but are not limited to wireless telephone companies, grocery stores, clothing stores, car dealerships, and airline companies. There are many different airline companies used daily for both national and international travel. JetBlue Airways is one amongst a number of airline companies. At one point JetBlue Airways was a discount airline carrier; which offered customer’s low fares, operated point-to-point systems, used two types of aircraft, served only snacks, and maintained quick turnaround times at airports. One of the airline company’s focal goals was for their customers to feel as if they were in a small cozy den in someone’s home. However, in the first six months of the year 2008 the US economy slowed and crude oil prices rose to a record of $140 per barrel. By this happening businesses had to cut back on employee travel and this rise in crude oil prices also stopped consumers from going on vacations. The rise in oil prices made air travel more expensive. There operating costs were low, especially compared to those of other major US airline companies (Thompson, Strickland & Gamble, 2010). Discuss Jet Blue’s strategic Intent Being affected by the increase in oil prices, Jet Blue decided to invest in the new airbus A320 which......

Mgt 599 Case Study

...Case Study, Module 4 TUI University MGT 599 Strategic Management EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) is an established high-end pizza restaurant chain competing primarily in the United States although it does have some international locations. The company reported an estimated $664.7 million in revenue for 2009 and operates some 252 unique locations with more than 14 thousand employees (California, 2009). The Porter’s Five Force Analysis indicates that the degree of industry rivalry is extremely high making CPK’s generic strategy based on quality difficult to maintain in a down economy. Additionally, the sheer number of competitors in the industry and the pizza segment specifically affords buyers a lot of power in choice. The PEST analysis indicates that CPK’s industry is not very regulated although it is subject to some health inspections at the lower government levels and the economic segment of the PEST is its area of critical exposure. The recommendation is that CPK hasten its international expansion into markets such as China in order to diversify its markets and revenue streams. CPK’S STRATEGY CPK is competing in a very crowded marketplace which is the restaurant industry an industry that is extremely competitive. There strategy is more focus within the company's......

...Nucor Corporation: Competing against Low-Cost Steel Imports Week 8 Assignment Bus 599 Nucor Corporation is today one of North America largest steel maker company. Although the company has a strong position in the steel market today, things have not always been as positive. According to Crafting & Executing Strategy, Nucor was first known as Nuclear Corporation of America, a company involved in the nuclear instrument and electronic business in 1950’s and early 1960’s. Facing bankruptcy, the company changed direction and decided to invest in the stable steel-joist business. The new name, Nucor Corporation, came along with the change in 1972 to break away from the nuclear image and embrace the new venture. This transformational change was due to the vision of new CEO and president, F. Kenneth Iverson. His strategic initiatives revealed to be a blessing as Nucor Corporation has been successfully growing since its creation. Discuss the trends in the steel industry and how it may impact Nucor’s strategy. The electric arc furnace technology was introduced in 1960. The “mini-mills” was limited when compared to integrated mills in the industry. In addition, the operating costs of companies are lower compared to integrated mills because they use electric arc furnaces that can produce various steel products to minimize production costs.
