Task 1 Webquest Reflection

...Katlin, I too also thought that each stage was assigned to a specific grade level. I learned that these stages overlapped, after seeing information from a previous week’s WebQuest in the present week’s WebQuest. This is good because it has helped me to become more familiar with the concepts that we have been studying the last few weeks and has allotted me more time to work with and practice these concepts. I believe that part of the reason why 4th graders in the U.S. read below the minimally acceptable levels of fluency is because of what we talked about in a previous WebQuest. In WebQuest #3, Task #2 (When we say students can’t read, what does that mean?), the text states: “95% of the textbooks that districts buy and publishers get lots of money for are written at least 2 grade levels above the grade level it is written for. So, unless the teacher modifies the reading and provides other resources, the student is always asked to read something at her/his frustrational level.” This is one reason why students are having trouble with Fluency. Another reason may be due to the teacher’s teaching style. I am a second year, returning substitute teacher. This year, the most popular teaching style that I have seen is that of a Traditionalist teacher. In WebQuest #2, Task #2 (The...

Why Did Global Food Prices Rise

...ASKING USEFUL QUESTIONS: GOALS, ENGAGEMENT, AND DIFFERENTIATION IN TECHNOLOGY-ENHANCED LANGUAGE LEARNING by Joy Egbert Washington State University jegbert @ wsu.edu In his popular 1997 article, Steve Ehrmann encouraged us to ask useful questions about technology for education (Ehrmann, 1997). In the years since Ehrmann asked his questions, increased pressures from legislative bodies, educational stakeholders, and business have driven an ever-increasing influx of technology into schools; however, this is not necessarily the evil that it has been portrayed as in various media. Within classrooms the availability of technology is offering us as language teachers the opportunity to usefully question what we do and why. Although technology itself is incapable of action or thought, its presence in our classrooms and schools is helping to facilitate questions about the goals of language classrooms, conceptions of teaching and learning, and our ability to address student needs. If we ask good questions and apply the answers to use technology in effective ways, resultant changes in our thinking and our pedagogy can lead to greater student achievement This paper first asks questions about and discusses language classroom goals. It then reflects on two related, essential strategies for language teaching and learning that can help us meet these goals: engagement and differentiation. Finally, the paper provides examples of how technology can be used to engage and differentiate for our learners...

Ethical Uses of Technology

...Sharon Palumbo 10/22/10 EDU 225 Instructional Technology Ethical Uses of Technology in the Classroom The internet has become a useful tool for gathering information and teaching students, but with all technology there are safety precautions that we must set-up to teach our children how to be safe. It is the responsibility of the parents and the teachers to inform students about internet safety. “Keeping students safe while online cannot be left to filters and firewalls placed on the network …these filters do not catch everything” (Andrew, 2009) Since the internet is relatively new technology many students are “far ahead of their parents in terms of Internet usage” and many parents have limited experience on the use of computers much less the knowledge they need to educate their children on its safety (Lemos, 2006). It has become necessary to offer parents information “about internet security, such as what Facebook privacy settings their children should have” in order to keep children safe (Butler, 2010). Technology aids such as “filters, firewalls, activity reports and spyware are all ways that you can keep an eye on more than one child at the same time” (Feldman, 2007). A filtering program allows teachers to enter types of sites that are inappropriate and the software blocks these sites from loading so that students are unable to access them. Firewalls help to protect a child from the repercussions of giving out personal information on the internet by blocking outsiders...

Special Ed Terminology

...Terminology Research Project Stacey N. Lodge St. Thomas University Abstract Teaching children with learning disabilities requires extensive knowledge in terminology and multiple frameworks of classroom instruction and management. When implementing different frameworks, it is imperative to understand the role of each concept and how it can be used successfully to support students with learning disabilities. Differentiated Instruction can be provided through Response to Intervention (RTI), the Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Technology in the Classroom, which are all well-known frameworks or strategies when discussing the teaching of students with disabilities. This paper will discuss each framework and its use within the classroom. Terminology Research Project Teaching students with learning disabilities presents difficulties for teachers utilizing traditional teaching strategies. “As every veteran teacher realizes, students with learning disabilities and other learning disorders may be less engaged in the learning task, unable to cope with multiple instructions, and poorly organized in their thinking and work habits when compared with students without disabilities.” (Bender, 2012, p.1) With this in mind, experts in the field have, over the course of time, developed several frameworks to support students with learning disabilities in the classroom. These frameworks of differentiated instruction, The Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Response to Intervention...
