As a student I feel this year has assisted me the most writing wise. I was never really big into writing but this year has helped shape me into a much better writer and actually gave me joy when given the task to create an essay. My strengths this year have consisted of a larger vocabulary and I have also learned to lure the reader in with better introduction sentences. For example in my college admissions essay I hooked my reader in quite well with the following sentence “ As a child it was never an interest of mine to apply or even think about attending college. However over the past four years I have been exposed to many life lessons which have lured me into the direction of academics.” That particular sentence is great evidence of me intriguing

Personal Narrative: My Growth In An Agricultural World

...Coming from a low income family and growing in an agricultural world, I learned how to be independent by making my own resources and raising my own crops. My mother, my siblings and I still lived in Mexico while my father would travel to the United states(U.S.) back and forth bringing money. I thought I would always live in an agricultural world, but then one day my father came back from the United States with two game systems, Nintendo 64 and the Sega. Having that experience of what technology can do, I was inspired to try and learn it. My town’s school only had school up to grade sixth, but most people would quit school and start working by that time. My dream of learning the ins and out of technology was drifting away from my grasp. In...

Self Analysis

...family unit that I was raised with. However, I do recall that watching how others around me socialized and interacted taught me that there were other ways of living and loving and I was determined to learn them. From an early age, I learned in bible school to treat people the way I wanted them to treat me, ie. The Golden Rule. I also learned that regardless of how I was treated in my home life by my siblings and parental figures, I could CHOOSE to treat others differently. I always knew that the way my father believed he should speak, interact, care for and discipline us was not the right way. As a child, I watched my neighborhood friends interact with their families, and it opened my eyes to how a normal family treats one another. For instance, I recall a certain neighborhood boy who always smelled on the school bus. Other children were so cruel to him; I would listen to them taunt him every day. One day, I stood up and socked one of his bullies in the nose. From that day forward, Wyatt Burkett and I built a friendship based on loyalty and mutual respect. It is surprising that my ability to stand up for my beliefs caused more people to respond to me and become my friend. I learned that you have to stand up for what you know in your heart is the right thing to do and people will respond to that socially. According to Kegan and Lahey’s 3rd level of consciousness, The Socialized Mind was formed in my early years based on my interpersonal environment and also by how I identified more...

8th Grade Year Research Paper

...Highlights of my 8th Grade Year Lucabella Beason “I kinda know what you mean. It’s never just what it seems”(Sunshine Khau Dreams and Atwood) Many people describe their 8th grade year as being stressful, and horrible. I wouldn’t disagree with that, but I also think that there more to everything, than what is on the surface. There’s lessons to be learned behind everything that goes wrong, and I think that those lessons help people to become a better person and a harder worker. I would identify my 8th grade year as being stressful, but at the end of it all I’ll look back and think about all of the good memories I made, and all of the lessons I learned that will help ready me for high school, and the real world. Through my 8th grade year especially being on varsity cheer, and getting to go to nationals in Florida, even though it was extremely stressful, I made many good memories. “Fun times come my way I'm takin em. So great when the”...

Final English Paper

...This year, in my English 1302 class, I have learned writing skills that I will utilize for the rest of my college career. Communication through text is a critical skill of modern day society and should rightfully take place as required curricula. I have grown through my efforts as a writer and my increasingly practical knowledge of essay construction, source integration as well as an understanding of the importance of this course. In my post-diagnostic examination, I received 56 out of 74. This was four questions less than my pre-diagnostic examination in which I received 60 out of 74. I feel I have grown as a writer further than just correcting the last minute grammatical and spelling errors in order to complete my final drafts. Instead, I have also blossomed in the skill of communication through my writing. I have learned the required structure of an essay, and how to construct a literature review as well as a researched argument. I still require practice in some areas of grammatical structure, such as comma splicing, as this was a recurring problem and an area of weakness for me. I have learned that a properly formed essay requires an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion. In the introduction, the thesis should be clear and is normally located at the end of the introduction. I learned the introduction requires an exigency describing why my topic is significant. In the body paragraphs, topic sentences are crucial. They should point back to the thesis and explain...

The Dance

...than eight years. When I was eight, my mother enrolled me in dancing classes, never realizing it would lead to anything serious. For the first few months, dance was entertainment, something to keep me busy. Although I enjoyed taking classes, I did not become serious until the following year, when my favorite tap teacher told my mother to consider getting me involved in more competitive classes. That was the beginning of my long and successful dancing career, one that has taught me many valuable lessons about the art of dance, and the art of life. Over the years, whether I was living in Buffalo, Atlanta, or Randolph, New Jersey, I learned to adjust as a person, and as a serious dancer. In fact, I found traits I needed to survive and grow as a dancer were also valuable in school and life. Of all the experiences I've had as a dancer, I cherish those moments when I had the opportunity to learn from other dancers. Learning is central to the development of a dancer. In Atlanta, for example, I trained with dancers who studied with the Atlanta Ballet Company as well as those who had trained with famous European dancers, I learned something different from each, even though practices were long and grueling. And yet, although at times I wanted to give up, I sensed that I would be rewarded for my efforts. This pattern repeated itself several times. I would be uprooted and immediately plunged into new and bewildering situations that made adjustment difficult. However, each time I was determined...

Personal Narrative: What I Learned In AP Chemistry

...a successful year in 300 chemistry sophomore year, I decided to make the jump and enroll in AP chemistry as my junior year science. The entire first semester of AP chemistry was an uphill battle and was riddled with failures. Any preconceived notions I had about my ability to succeed were seemingly shot down within the first 3 weeks of the class. There were concepts I had never learned and problems I wouldn't have dared touch in my sophomore chemistry class. After a long quarter of struggling, I knew that I needed to make a change. I decided to look at what I was doing wrong in AP chemistry, and what I was doing right in my other classes. As AP chem was the only AP I took junior year, the lens that I looked at it through was much different. I never had expected a class to require so much time after school. I had never experienced poor grades on tests I had studied hours for. Strategies that had worked in the past with other courses were ineffective for this one. Besides the grades, the ideas and thinking strategies I learned after that first quarter resonated throughout my life. Outside of school, I thought more critically about problems to solve, simple and complicated, in everyday life. I found that there are many more ways than one to get from point A to point B....

Psycology 140

...also enhance our memory and guide our behavior. Lahley, Benjamin B. / Psychology an Introduction/ 9th Ed. 2. How is language learned and how does it relate to thinking? Language is learned so early that it is difficult to explain how it is managed. Some psycholinguists have proposed that language is learned by special genetically programmed procedures that are unique to language learning. Others contend that the general analytic capacity of the human brain is such that even complex language rules can be worked out without any innate knowledge or special language acquisition procedures. Regardless of which view is correct, experience with one’s native language must be critically important. Narrative skill differences are connected to the way that mothers converse with their children. If they use an elaborative style, engaging in lengthy discussions about children’s past experiences, providing lots of details, asking questions and encouraging children to provide details as well, their children’s narratives tend to be more adequate and informative. An interesting twist is that mothers who engage their children in this kind of high-quality narrative practice also have children who remember past events in their own lives better. In my opinion all this is true, I have 2 nieces one who is three years old and one who is two years old. My...

Religious and Diversity Paper

...ETH/125 Religious and Ethnic Diversity Paper: Buddhist and Asian I chose to write about Asia and Buddhism (Theravada). I chose to write my paper on the Asian community, because I’ve always been curious about their culture and lifestyle. I find the Asian community to be very intriguing, colorful and vibrant. I decided that since I was going to research on Asian culture and share my paper on religion Theravada Buddhism beliefs. The religion of Buddhism is based on the teachings of a man named Siddhartha. This man was born in Nepal about 500 years before Jesus, to be a great leader or a holy man. He was immune to the external walls of the palace by his father, a king in India who think that by doing so, he went down the path of being a ruler. Little King knew that life brought him no where near the road to enlightenment. Siddhartha saw four events when he finally left the palace for daily outings. The first of these events was an older man, and he never saw the elderly before his servant called him and told him to change the way everyone gets old. The second event was a sick man, the servant told him that everyone gets sick, and thy father is sick, you're sick. The third event was seeing a corpse that most affected him when he realizes that in the end everyone dies. On the fourth trip, he saw a religious person meditating and trying to seek enlightenment. He decided to leave his wife and child in the palace and go out and explore the worlds suffering. “There...

My 4th Year High School Life, Different from the Others

...My 4th year High School Life, Different from Others Alyssa Bea Tanda, IV-Br. Flavius High school life is really fun. There are so many happenings in your life that you will never forget, so many things that had changed your life. For me there are many things in my life that changed a lot in me but I can say that the one that had changed me the most is my being a 4th year high school student. I don’t know why, but I really learned a lot in this part of my life. There are also some good effects of me being a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year high school student, but being a fourth year student is really different. It’s different from my other past experiences. The first day of 4th year came and I found out that my section is Br. Flavius, wherein my classmates were also my classmates when I was in 3rd year. At first I had thought of transferring to other section, because I want something new and I want to have new friends with other people. But then I had a realization that I can’t afford to be away from my friends. I also thought that it is God’s will that I am part of that section, so there is a purpose why I belong here. One of the main reasons why I decided not to transfer to other section is because I learned that the adviser of our section is Mr. Joseph Consignado. Even when I was still on the lower years, I already know his name. Many people say that he is one of the best advisers of the high school department. Every section that he handled was always known to be one of the best...

Personal Narrative: Myself As A Writer

...Throughout this year, I felt like i have grown more as a writer. In the beginning of this year, I did not really understand the meaning of writing. As I go through the year, I understand more and more of why we write. When I first came into this class, I only knew what Mr. Shambaugh and Mr. Riise had taught us last year about writing. I felt like I have grown dramatically with my writing. I know use stronger words when writing an essay that means something. As well as that, I know enjoy writing long pieces or even short essays. This semester taught me how to improve on being a writer, and how to open my mind to new things. While first proceeding through this class, I had no idea how I would feel writing essays every other day. I felt like I was going to be miserable and get behind fast. In the beginning, I knew I had to come up with a better attitude and put my mind into my work. When we first had an essay due, I was a little nervous because I did not know what you expected of us. Now, I write my papers the night before it is due usually and I do not hesitate to press submit. While in English 111/112, you have...
