The gatehouse was essentially to the structure of castle, due to the protection it could give the residence inside, in addition to drama, when the gate is lower. However, castles were not the only structure which featured a gatehouse. Archaeology evidence from Whitley shows evidence of the use of gatehouse. In this case the excavations reveal evidence of four gatehouses (Went and Ainswel; 2009, 28). In addition evidence from Goltho shows there was a gatehouse, as there is a break in the ditch system, Bereford describes it as ‘impressive’ (1987, 36).
