Digital Addiction In this day and age, people young and old use media in different forms. Media can be used as entertainment in the form of a t.v. show, a video game, music or a type of reading material including comics, novels or newspaper articles. Another purpose for using media is to communicate with friends via using a computer application known as skype which enable the user to voice chat or send messages. My media use is composed mostly as entertainment mostly in the form of films and video games but I also use other kinds of media such as google mail and rarely facebook to stay in touch with friends. Music is sometimes combined with other tasks including homework or everyday activities like cleaning. Media has become a significant part of life for me and I am enthusiastic that media is widely used by the world. After 3 days of recording any kind of media use, I’ve realized that the bulk of my media usage is spent on gaming, television and computer. I would give roughly ninety percent of my media usage on such mediums. Gaming and computer use is a daily form of activity. The computer can be utilized to do a vast range of things including computer streaming , gaming social media and is of course a huge source of information. Since a computer is capable of such things I find myself using a computer to replace other appliances. For example, I do not watch shows on a television as much anymore and use a computer as a means of viewing instead. Computer streaming does not follow a fixed schedule like on TV and therefore is the most convenient for me whenever I have any spare time to watch. Although some T.V can be recorded some TV shows cannot be viewed on TV and exclusive to only streaming. The kinds I would otherwise watch on a computer consists of mostly TV series that can be viewed on streaming sites such as Hulu Netflix or Crunchyroll. Youtube is another kind of type of streaming site due to how much content is available for viewing. Whether I feel like watching something funny to kill time or listen to music while checking mail, Youtube has so much content that there is almost usually something to watch. A trend that I have noticed with media is the way media is incorporated or fused with other activities and other sorts of media. Some of these activities include washing a car or whatever task that really does not necessarily require any form of media at all. Reviewing though my media logs, some of the entries have other tasks that are being done coupled with some kind of media use. Through the records, I can deduce that most of the time I use the computer for internet browsing, gaming, homework there is music playing in the background. Not only limited to the computer, media is applied in the use of more portable devices such as a smartphone. It is most commonly used in conjunction with other activities which can include so much more possiblities of multitasking than a computer mostly because of its compact size and expediency. For instance smartphones can be used while on foot or driving, used to check weather conditions or as a gps in case you’re and need directions I have seen that multitasking with a kind of media is common among activities i do on a regular basis. I appreciate the fact that media is convenient and can be used in a moments notice due to the portable, compact devices. Seeing how dependant we are on media and how it can be applied to everyday life and situations, it boggles my mind to visualize how media will serve us in the future or become a part of us rather. Possibly, a world that is almost completely reliant on media usage. Even though I am glad that media is widely utilized, I can also see that as more media advancements are being made, the more dependent the community gets towards media. It is not only that people are used to listening to music, going online, watching, texting and calling friends, it is that the act of doing such things has become invisible. Media is becoming more and more an extension of one’s self. Whenever I wake up in the morning, I instinctively start up my computer and open up an internet browser to just browse the web and check mail. A few years back when I did not have a computer in the house, I would turn on the TV when I just got back from school. It was just natural for me to go and turn on the TV. Now a computer is what takes care of that sort of need and sometimes do not think about it when i start using it. The same can be said about phones. Phones are used in usually almost every kind of aspect of someones life even to a point where it can be a distraction as well. Sometimes, I just pull out my phone for almost no reason at all, when I’m doing homework or eating lunch. I would use a phone to substitue the applications I would use on a computer since my iphone can access the internet and contains various apps that can be downloaded. The device in a way is a part of me. Without giving much thought, I just use it. I have noticed that I have a constant need to stay connected whether it is television, cell phones or a computer. Hard to imagine a mere day with no access to any of these. Every so often, I from time to time become annoyed that a page does not load in an instant. Thinking about this reliance is kind of disturbing and observing the modern American environment leads me to believe that it is practically a necessity to have constant exposure and connection to media to live.

Being a Teenage Female

...1. Your decisions are important. One decision can change the trajectory of your life. It takes courage to decide you are not ready for something, and courage to decide to make yourself vulnerable and try something new. Always be courageous. 2. Maintain your digital privacy. If you would not walk into the lunchroom and shout it out, don't ever text or share it on social media. Your "friends" list will not adhere to the same standards of discretion about your life as you expect, particularly when hitting the forward button is so simple. 3. Use the right measurements. Life is not measured in the amount of likes you get on Instagram, numbers on a scale or even your GPA. And there isn't a "thing" you can buy with the money you make that can fill a void in your soul. Always remember that life is about the impact you have on others, so work on building your brain and growing your heart, and the rest will fall into place. 4. Always believe the best in people. People can be mean. There will be a million times when someone says something or does something or you are told about something that rips your heart to shreds. Give that person the benefit of the doubt, and then offer them grace -- because when this stuff happens, it is not about you, brother. It says infinitely more about them. It is what they have going on in their life that is impacting the way they behave. 5. Use your voice. Never sit idly by while someone else is being treated poorly. Period. ...

Makes You Stronger

...in the early morning hours. Even though it made me sick, I didn’t stop getting drunk until I was 41, when my middle-aged body started to rebel in a language I could finally understand. Torrential night sweats and heart palpitations made it clear that this stuff would kill me. The mother of a five-year-old daughter at the time, I couldn’t let that happen. Fast-forward three years and I’m feeling grounded in my sobriety, smug in the perception that I had narrowly escaped disaster when the phone call came. My beloved 20-year-old nephew was killed in a car crash at one in the morning. When I heard the time of the crash, I instinctively asked, “Was he drinking?” The answer was yes. Ironically, I spent the next four months battling the urge to numb the unbearable pain of grief with alcohol. Not only had our family lost this beautiful child, but I also nursed the guilt that my own example of alcoholic indulgence and carelessness had helped put Daniel on that rural road at 1 a.m. He and his family had been experiencing hard times and his mother told me that a few months before Daniel’s death, she said to him, “What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.” Until Daniel died, I didn’t pay much attention to the first four words of that phrase. My assumption was that hard times would always lead to strength. Now I know that those words represent a choice. The way I choose to respond to pain, grief, boredom, and frustration—will put me on a road toward life or death. And the odds...

Teachers

...Teachers When students graduate high school or college, they usually get a new perspective about all kinds of things. It takes years of experience and meeting new people to gain a good judgment on anything. Going through life and learning from it makes people more aware of other people and their personality. Also, when graduating, students will have learned to distinguish between the types of teachers. All teachers can be divided into different types, three of them are the strict type, the easy going type and the lazy type. The first type is the strict teacher. Strict teachers usually have the urge to explain every single inch of the book and “leaving no stone unturned”. The never give grades or extra credits unless they think the student really, truly deserves it. So, for most students, that’s another way of saying there is no extra credit. The tests they make are usually the hardest. Because if they’re explaining the whole book, they might as well put everything in the test! Mostly, they are detested and disliked by students. The second one is the easy going type. When it comes to explaining the lesson, they only explain what they deem important or beneficial to the students. They are usually very flexible when giving grades and extra credits, and might even give grades when a student doesn’t even deserves it. For example, if a student is funny and he makes them laugh, he shall be suffocated with extra credits! The tests are usually easy and very straight forward and without...

The problem, says Beyer, is that most analytics efforts today are about putting transactions from many different systems together. “Just putting it all on one database goes back to this disproven belief that if you want to use HTAP for all of your analytics, it requires all of your transactions to be in one place,” he says. “You still have to integrate diverse data.” Moreover, bringing in an in-memory database means there’s another product to manage, secure, and figure out how to integrate and scale. For Intuit, the use of Spark has taken away some of the urge to embrace in-memory databases. “If we can solve 70% of our use cases with Spark infrastructure and an in-memory system could solve 100%, we’ll go with the 70% in our analytic cloud,” Loconzolo says. “So we will prototype, see if it’s ready and pause on...

Essay on English 200

...Essay on English 200 Course Description and Objectives The purpose of this course is to fine-tune your academic writing process. We will work with They Say, I Say: The Moves that Matter in Academic Writing and other readings. I am most concerned with the use of language. In what ways can language be a powerful tool? How can it be a hindrance? How can language be used purposefully? Too often we forget the weight of the words we use and how we use them. In this class I want us to pay close attention to what we say and how we say things. We will also pay close attention to what we read and hear from others. Part of being a college student will involve partaking in discussions in class and through our essays and research. As such, we must be able to listen and read not only for understanding but also for application. We need to first understand what is being said and then figure out how to either respond or apply what we’ve heard. Note: During the course of the semester we might discuss controversial topics in class. While I expect some (most or all) of us will feel strongly about certain issues, we need to treat each other respect even if we disagree. Be careful with the words you choose and your delivery. We don’t have to agree but we do have to treat each other with respect. Objectives * Students will be familiar with writing for different audiences. Part of the UHWO GLOs (General Learning Outcomes) requires students to effectively communicate information for an intended...

Trichotillomania Research Paper

...Trichotillomania is a mental illness that causes one to pull out their hair, especially hair from the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes. This can often cause skin problems, such as infection, as well as problems with the regrowth of hair. This can cause the hair to be positioned in random blotches, as well as the thinning of hair. Individuals with this mental illness often try and stop pulling out their hair, but it is usually very difficult for them to stop. The hair pulling is typically done in private because of shame or embarrassment. It has been found that some individuals do this as a way to relieve stress because of the pleasant feeling that afterwards ensues (caused by the release of endorphins). Oftentimes the individuals will have a specific way they like to pull out the hair, or they will play with the hair afterwards, such as running it across their face, rubbing it between their fingers, or even eating the hair. The causes of trichotillomania are still unclear, though some potential causes have been identified. Trichotillomania is currently thought to be influenced by environment and genetics. Genetics can affect the balance of chemicals in your brain, called neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, which is a chemical in the brain that makes you feel good. It has also been thought to be caused by a change in hormones, especially since it occurs around the ages of nine to thirteen years old. Trichotillomania affects children of both genders equally. However, in adults...

Aaaaa

...When boarding a plane, that basic system is lost. We need to rely on more sophisticated systems if we are to regulate our feelings. Start with the amygdala, a cluster of brain cells similar in size and shape to an almond. (Amygdala is the Greek word for almond.) The amygdala's job is to monitor what goes on around you. If everything is routine, it does nothing. If anything happens that is unexpected or non-routine, the amygdala calls it to your attention by triggering a release of stress hormones. The stress hormones activate the systems that regulate us emotionally and physically. The Mobilization System (MS) revs up the body in case it turns out you need to run or fight. The MS also produces an urge to escape. But a more sophisticated system, Executive Function (EF), overrides the urge to escape, and starts a three-step process: a. Assess the situation. Is this irrelevant, an opportunity, or a threat? b. Build a plan. If something needs to be done, what am I going to do? c. Commit to the plan. Take the action needed to carry the plan out. If EF assesses the unexpected situation as irrelevant, it signals the amygdala to stop the stress hormone release. If EF assesses the situation as an opportunity, the stress hormones cause feelings of excitement. But what EF assesses that there is danger? The stress hormones cause feelings of fear. If EF can come up with a plan that it thinks will deal with the danger, it commits to the plan....

Expository Essay: Life

...When I try to hold on to it very tightly, as if squeezing it, it slips away faster. But when I try to cast it away, it sticks on my hands. Sometimes, I think, to appreciate life best, one has neither to hold on to it tightly nor to let it go so carelessly. The sand in the hourglass is life. It is better to let it flow freely, although not carelessly.             How we take life is often dictated by what priorities we have. And life, being so vast, offers everything which can be a priority to us. A student ever so eager to get out of poverty would say, “Life would be meaningless if I don’t finish my studies.” A terribly-in-love woman would say, “Should I lose him now, life would be meaningless to me.” And an alcoholic, trembling with the urge to drink, would be ready to give anything he has, even his dignity, for a bottle of liquor. Then, there is this young ambitious businessman who desperately wants to make his first million before reaching forty. He easily forgets he has a wife, children and friends. Only the first million seems to matter.             But now, what are the things that last which could have real meaning in one’s life? St. Paul has spoken so eloquently about them:...

A Cat in the Rain

...“Cat in the Rain” is a short psychological story by Ernest Hemingway. The plot revolves around an American couple on a vacation in Italy; there isn't any preface to the story, we know nothing about the couple’s past. The narration starts straight off when the young woman sees a cat hiding from the rain in the hotel yard. At first sight the setting is ideal: a cozy room on the second floor, a lovely view from the window. However, there is one thing which spoils the whole picture, and that is the rain, which is why the couple stays inside. Rain is also often associated with sadness; to bring home this air of melancholy, parallel constructions are used: "The rain dripped from the palm trees. The water stood in pools on the gravel paths. The sea broke in a long line in the rain and slippedback down the beach to come up and break again in a long line in the rain ". The abundance of water is not accidental either; the rain, the sea, the pool – water symbolizes something inevitable; water is everywhere: it is on the ground, it is pouring from the heavens as though the nature weeps for something. This might also be regarded as a case of parallelism, since as the story progresses we realize that the feelings of the girl are not that positive. Here author also uses alliteration of sounds [r], [l]: "Rain dripped from the palmtrees, the sea broke in a long line in the rain", it brings the rhythm to the description of the weather. The conflict starts to unfold when the girl notices a cat in the rain...

Academic Stress Tears Down Well Being

...Students have been reported to sleep fewer hours per night than the required amount of time which is 9.25 hours (Conner et Al., 2010). Lack of sleep has been a major cause of student’s problems when it is time for class. Lack of sleep makes one to easily lose focus because of being sleepy. Another major effect of academic stress is that students are experiencing certain malfunctions in their body. Stomach ache and headache have been attributed by students to academic stress (Conner et Al., 2010). Due to too much focus of the students in their studies eating has been ignored and set aside. For headache it can be mainly caused by the lack of sleep brought by academic stress. Cheating also has been a major effect of academic stress. Because of the urge to survive a certain course or subject a...
