All is not fair in love and war

People say that love never fails,
That all is fair in love and war,
But really, how do you know,
What love can or can not do?
And if all is fair in love and war, then
Why does someone always end up getting hurt?
I know my love will never fail,
Because I love you with all my heart and soul,
Because I would give my life for you,
And everything I am or have just to be with you.
However, I can not be fair to all
Because all is not fair in love and war.
I wish to hurt no one, so I don't,
But by doing so, I hurt myself.
My heart wants to be with you so much
And yet I wish to hurt no one.
So I don't, I don't confess my love for you,
I keep it locked inside,
And as a friend I stay by your side.
My love for you remains forever pure and unchanged.
I love you, Yes, I do, with all my heart and soul,
With all that I am and hope to be just for you.
My heart untamed and wild, dreaming of what if,
But it's cut in half by the love I feel for both.
My heart belongs to you but only half,
Because I gave the other half away to him.
Now I suffer for my love, for both are great,
But only one, I wish I could be with forever.
All is not fair in love and war,
So I love you both and suffer much,
Because my heart is wounded, torn in half.
I can not speak of my deep love for you,
I can not confess my feelings to you.
So I go on with my life pretending nothing's wrong.
Why must I go on without your love?
It's faith, I guess, that I suffer so.
It's destiny to love you so.

War and Love

...Women’s Power Thao Vo Monday 4:30-5:45 War, the word that has been and will always be the word that no one wants to hear or think about. Aristophanes, a writer of ancient Athens, wrote a comedy to discuss the serious topic of war and how it affected the Greeks. He is also the author of Lysistrata, a play where Aristophanes expressed his feeling and thought about the war during this period of time. “Aristophanes wrote to express his vision on life, his delight in life itself seen behind the warping screen of contemporary event.” In this play, we will get to see the importance and serious meaning of war toward the union, espectually the soldiers’ family. The play Lysistrata is about the war between Athens and Sparta. This play is about the story of “ an Athenian matron who convinces the women of Athens and Sparta to withhold sex from their husband until they sign a peace treaty.”The main character is Lysistrata, and she is one of the Athens’ women that willingly to stand up toward the men just to bring peace back. She does not want war between the cities in Greeks. Lysistrata wanted to save Greeks and she believed that if all the women agreed then they can achieve the tremendous goal. “So fine it comes to this--Greece saved by Woman!” She held a meeting with all the other women and told them about her plan to bring peace. There is only one way to save the union is to make all the women withhold sexual privileges with their husband. “sexually explicitly to a degree that can...

Love Is War

...This paper is an analysis of two separate essays, one written by MichaelRostovtzeff and another written by Henri Pirenne, both major historical authorities of the19 th century. The essays themselves are two perspectives on the transitional period between late antiquity and the early middle ages. An in-depth look into the historicalmaterial that these two arguments discuss can provide a greater depth of understanding of the transitional period. The main idea of Michael Rostovtzeff’s essay, The Decay of Ancient Civilization ,argues that the decline and fall of the Roman Empire was due to a gradual barbarizationof the Empire from within, most notably in the west. It further stresses that the Greco-Roman assimilative elements that unified Roman society had slowly debilitated to anineffective state. This coupled with steady levelling down of the standards contributed tothe acceleration of barbarization in the cities. The process according to Rostovtzeff hadto do with two features of the period: “the political, social, and economic on the onehand, and the intellectual and spiritual on the other.” 1 On the political side of thingsRostovtzeff discusses the rise of the Germanic ruling classes and the resulting barbarization of government and the aristocracy. On the economic and social sphere therewas a decline and “gradual relapse of the ancient world to very primitive forms” of economy and social stratification. Intellectually and spiritually the empire was alsoaffected argues Rostovtzeff...

War, Love, and Glory

...Rahat Hasan War, Love, and Glory “And his loving father laughed, his mother laughed as well, and glorious Hector, quickly lifting the helmet from his head, set it down on the ground, fiery in the sunlight, and raising his son he kissed him, tossed him in his arms, lifting a prayer to Zeus, all you immortals! Grant this boy, my son, may be like me, first in glory among the Trojans, strong and brave like me, and rule all Troy in power” (6.562-69) In Book 6 of The Iliad, Homer describes the highly acclaimed Trojan warrior, Hector, returning from the battlefield to the city of Troy, where he meets his wife Andromache, and his infant son Astyanax. The excerpt displayed above describes the meeting of Hector with his family and serves an important purpose in The Iliad because it humanizes and reveals the positive traits of the great warrior; the audience can relate to Hector as he returns from war and suddenly embraces Astyanax upon seeing him. Homer is able to achieve a great level of emotional depth in this excerpt because he employs imagery that vividly conveys Hector’s return to his family. When Hector hastily removes his helmet upon seeing how it frightens Astyanax, Homer writes a series of clauses containing thoughts, feelings, and emotions which make the audience realize that Hector, who previously affirmed his devotion to the war, has a tender and loving side as well. Hector’s sudden display of emotion may seem questionable to the audience at first, because in...

The Struggle Between Love and War

...The Struggle Between Love and War While both the Capitol of Panem and the twelve Districts fought against life and death, the Capitol focused on entertainment for society while the twelve Districts fought for survival. Just as the conflict theorists believe, the Capitol and twelve Districts were in a struggle between good and evil. The Capitol represented the macro-level analysis for the main setting of The Hunger Games. Whereas, District Twelve represented the micro-level analysis as one of the poorest Districts. The Capitol was a government that chose participants from different Districts to compete against the powers of evil. The Capitol was structured to enforce rules, which created resentment and resistance between the twelve Districts that were fighting. However, some of the participants tried to change the rules of the Capitol for their own survival. The Capitol forced the players to fight to the death of another while the citizens of the society watched for entertainment. District twelve produced two of the stronger players, who were both well trained for fighting. The main female character, Katniss, portrayed love when she volunteered in place of her sister, who was the actual chosen participant. The male participant, Peeta, chose to stay in the games and fight to protect Katniss, even though someone tried to volunteer to go in his place. In the beginning...

The Love Affair Between Humans and War

...Josheff English 111 Eric Steineger, Instructor January 18, 2013 The Love Affair between Humans and War Mankind has the habit of glorifying war. Rather than a bloody, violent field of youth wasted, war is elevated to a divine status where the reason to fight erases the evil deeds man commit to survive. Despite the amazing honors and inspirational films, it is not only unavoidable but imperative that humans remember that “war is hell.” As Robert E. Lee allegedly inferred, if man were to forget the grueling aspects of war and “grow too fond of it” then mankind would partake in non-stop trivial violence. Drew Faust has developed her article based upon Robert E. Lee’s eloquent observation of human nature and expanded the topic to the general population’s increasing interest in war. Although war has not constantly been displayed to be a hobby of mankind, the population’s interest on the subject has never wavered. Publically, war has experienced many ups and downs in popularity such as when war became “back in fashion in Reagan-Bush America.” Privately, people have continually researched the dynamics of war. Civil War based literature grew exponentially and by the end of the twentieth century “more than 60,000 volumes of civil war history had appeared.” The Civil War became so apparent to mankind that it transgressed from factual to experiential interest with Ken Burns’s production of The Civil War in 1993. The debut of this series “attracted an audience of 14 million” and...

Why War Is Bad?

...from the 21st century, my first and quick answer will be war Wars have been going on for centuries. War unavoidably.Brings death, destruction and suffering, which both ruin lives and nations. The most unjustifiable consequence of war is the loss of innocent civilians' lives. Civilians, who could have lived to make a huge impact on the world, pose no direct threat to the 'enemy' and might not even share the motives of the side they have been presumed to support. War eradicates hopes and dreams of millions, destroys homelands, frightens and oppresses people. Nothing that, in the end, brings more bad than it does good can be justified. Any kind of war is unjustifiable because it involves only killing. And what kind of victory does one get? Victory over millions of dead human flesh.Victory over the broken hearts of the family and relatives. We must not forget the horrors of the two world wars. In these wars, there was mass-killing and destruction of property. Thousands were made widows and orphans. War brings hatred and spreads falsehood. People become selfish and brutal. Finally I believe Wars are not the solution of the problems. Instead they generate problems and create hatred among nations. War can decide one issue but gives birth too many. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are the greatest horrible faces of the consequence of wars. Even after 60 years people are suffering from the miseries of war. Whatever be the cause of war, it always results in destruction of life and property at...

The Things They Carried

...Pena COP 1102 “The Things They Carried” What does becoming a soldier mean? Does it mean that duty comes before love or does it mean the opposite? Could it be that soldiers do not have control of their feelings? From the mind of Tim O’Brien, “The Things They Carried” describes young soldiers that were automatically bumped up into manhood. The author treats the inner conflict that each soldier had to bear during the Vietnam War while fighting for their country. Witnessing horrific scenes of war and the emotional and physical burdens that each of them carried, O’Brien unfolds how these men had no choice but to fulfill their patriotic duty. As the leader of the platoon, First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross goes through an inner conflict between love and duty, carrying his orders in his mind and Martha in his heart. But how far can war or following orders, impair the human side of compassion and love? Although, soldiers become men at war, O’Brien focuses in a story where war makes men emotionally handicap, leaving mental scars that may never heal. The story is told by a third person’s point of view, however, O’Brien includes a touch of his personal experiences during the war where he spent a year in Vietnam (Hicks). As Josiah Bunting said, “The things he carried into war are very different from what he carried away from it” (Bunting) expressing O’Brien’s experience at war and how his experience as a soldier would convince readers to believe that the different traumatic moments really...

What Does Martha Symbolize In The Things They Carried

...why Obrien included a woman in this war story, the significance of Martha, and the connection between love and war. The reason why Obrien inserts women in in this war story is because of their meaning to the soldiers. Many of the soldiers had a significant other like Henry and Cross. These women were what kept them sane. For example, Henry Dobbins would wear his girlfriend’s pantyhose around his neck. Even after they had separated he would still wear them. The reason he does this is because of a “illusion of protection” (397). So, even though she has lost love for him, those pantyhose still symbolized love he once had. This makes him feel loved and protected hence “illusion of protection”. Another example is that Jimmy Cross had received a good luck charm from Martha and it was just a pebble, but he would always have it on him (396). This shows that these women are what keep these men together and by having a “piece of them” it keeps them safe. From all the hate within the war, the ladies “Love” is what kept these soldiers from falling apart....

Things They Carried By Tim O Brien: An Analysis

...In the novel The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien presents the truth of war by using the recurring image of the physical objects each soldier carries to and from the war. While they all carry heavy baggage, they also carry emotional baggage, made up of grief, love and guilt. O’Brien emphasizes on the tangible and intangible objects each soldier brings to the war. Each soldier's physical burden draws attention to their emotional burden. Even after the war, many of the soldiers can still hear the choppers in the background along with the unremovable baggage. O’Briens tells the stories of many of the honorable soldiers such as Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, and his own firsthand experiences during the war; his poetic realism and comic fantasy illuminate the raw and gruesome reality of war. Lieutenant Jimmy Cross exemplifies the role of a leader; he comes across grief, love, and guilt throughout the novel. “As a first lieutenant and platoon leader, Jimmy Cross carries a compass, maps, code books, binoculars, and a .45-caliber pistol that...

The Lost Generation Through Cohn, Brett and Jake

...impacted by the outbreak of World War One. However, Cohn still lives by the pre-war values, mainly due to the fact that the war had little impact on him, unlike Jake who was injured in combat, or Brett, who lost her true love during the war. They all have characteristics that are similar with many people who were a part of what Gertrude Stein called “the lost generation”, a generation of people whose previous values were figuratively destroyed by the outbreak of World War I, and they wandered the post-war world without guidance, without a purpose. (Britannia 1 ) This is because Hemingway created these characters to symbolize a large portion of people in the 1920’s, through the characters attitudes, lifestyle and personalities. In doing so, Hemingway uses these three characters to represent different groups of people within the lost generation. Robert Cohn represents the people of the lost generation whose lives had been unaffected directly by the war, and those who still continued to live by failed the pre-war values of romance, morality and honor. Many of these people were outcasts; they were different, just like Cohn, and Cohn knew what it was like to be different. He spent a good portion of his life feeling like an outcast due to the fact that he was Jewish and Cohn never served in World War I, and was therefore typically scorned by people who had seen combat, like Jake. Cohn holds onto these traits because he had never seen the full extent of the war, and he reads books that are...
