PBS is a public broadcasting service. This service offers commercial free shows that are educational. This educational media helps children get ready for success in school. This service is funded by the members donations, grants, and government help. The use of PBS has been around since 1969. The topics of shows include arts, culture, food, health, history, home, how to, news, parents, science, nature, and technology. People all around the United States watch PBS and use it in different ways. Teacher's and parent's have used this site for many years to educate young children. Education is very different today than it was in 1969 when PBS started. This service has to go through many changes to keep up with each new year. Such changes would be new topics, updated videos, and a new website. This channel has so many different topics that it also helps educate adults. PBS operates more than 350 stations. PBS serves all the fifty states. PBS also serves the countries that America owns such as Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Guam. During the years 2011 and 2012. PBS has been awarded and nominated 123 times. The television station of PBS has been working with university’s for years. Sixty eight percent of the stations have set up a partnership with local universitys. I found it interesting that in a year 31.6 million children ages 2-11 watch PBS Kid's. More than 11 million children use the PBS kids website each month. PBS Kid's offers seven literacy skills and eleven science and math skills.
The example of a behavior I have witnessed was when I did my first co-op work experience. There was a four year child in the classroom next to the one I was in. I would frequently have to go over to that room and get things. Sometimes when I would be over there he would have an outburst. This was my first experience of this violent challenging behavior in a childcare center. The child would throw things, kick, hit, knock over, slap, anything in his path. There are two main incidents that happened that I remember. The first one was the day the child's mother brought him to school late that morning. During play time he wanted something from one of the other children so the teacher told him to wait until the little girl was done playing with it and that friends needed to share. When the teacher turned her back, he jerked that toy out of the girls hands. She began to cry. The teacher told the boy to go to the quiet center and then he began picking up anything in his path and throwing it. He also was knocking over the easel, chairs, and books. The teacher kept trying to control him but nothing was helping. When I was done getting what I needed out of this classroom, I went back to my classroom. So I am not sure how they finished handling him that day. The second incident was one morning during play time. I was sitting at a the table doing an activity with some children. All of a sudden we heard screams and crying. It was this boy getting upset again. Then one of the teachers from that classroom picked the child up and carried him through our classroom and out the door. He was screaming, kicking, and hitting her. I was in shock that a child would act that way. I would use PBS to help with this child by giving him the option of having computer time and use the videos to direct his mind away from the behavior. When the child picks computer time, I would play an educational video for him to watch. I could also use the computer for his quiet time area if he enjoyed the videos and games. I would also show him how to play the educational games that are provided. This site was used when I did my second co-op work experience. One day the teacher and I went over to the computers she pulled the PBS Kid's website. She started showing me the resources it had, I realized this was an awesome program and very educational. She played one of the games to show me how it helped the children. The game was a word and alphabet game. Each character in the game had the name of animal or object as their body and the characters would present letters to the children to match.
